mwhouston Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 @@Owen Y, I always use chokes in all my tube power amps and in some preamps. Mainly where tube rectification is used. After saying that in my latest tube MM phono preamp with SS rectification I also used a choke. Choked PSs and the device they are in sound better than non-choked. I think it has to do with better filtering of the DC and the fact that the choke stops the audio signal at the choke. Also I always use at least two stage PS filtering. First stage choked, second stage resistive. The second stage multiplies many times the effectiveness of the first.
Owen Y Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 Hi mw - I guess it depends on what you value in your sound, or what sounds more like music to you. A choke or coil, is a beautiful device for audio - it blocks AC, but has low resistance to DC (providing it's big enough).. More efficient & better sounding than a resistor, but...more costly & bulky - no free lunch! The techs talk abour better 'regulation' - which to me means PSU voltage does not sag when the music demands dynamic power So, you get greater dynamic power & bandwidth. I hear this whenever coils replace resistors - PSU filter chokes, plate chokes, TVCs, LCR phono.... Cheers, Owen Dark Lantern blog - http://darklanternforowen.wordpress.com/ 1

Malcolm Posted October 4, 2015 Posted October 4, 2015 Please tell me about the spray gun & multi regulators. What size nozzle is in the gun. Oh and the Hifill Hi D The water & particle seperators are SMC with air reg after seperator . The spray gun is a 3M accuspray hg18 primer gun, 1.8mm nozzle . http://3mcollision.com/accuspraysystem With 3M PPS cup liner, I hate cleaning up after 2pac HiFill http://3mcollision.com/products/paint-application/paint-preparation-system The HiFill is nothing special , plus the owner of the cabs wanted to keep cost down . So we used HiChem 2pac iso free primer isolator . http://www.hichem.com.au/hicheminfo/WEB_PIDS/Primers&Putties/2pifpi_2.pdf Cheers 1

What do you use for the topcoat application Where do you get you products?
Malcolm Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 (edited) What do you use for the topcoat application Where do you get you products? The last couple of jobs have been saturn black acrylic & stone guard for texture finishes . So I have used the 3M accuspray gun . I have a couple of siphon feed and gravity feed Iwata's there non complient and produce a bit if over spray . Looking at a new gun/guns at the moment for a more upmarket finishe . Need to have low air consumption due to my small compressor . The Sagola 4500 looks good and priced well for a couple job's coming up . I don't have a fav store ,depends what product i'm using and I call the manufacturer and ask who their distributor is . Worked half a day on the cab's 4 rubbed down ready for colour . Morning was spent core training . Cheers Edited October 5, 2015 by Malcolm

I spray Duratex as a texture coat and after many variations have settled on using the acrylic colour with no lacquer over the top, it gives me the gloss level I'm after. Have you tried any of the automotive water based colours?
Malcolm Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 (edited) Have you tried any of the automotive water based colours? Hi D I'll check your gun out . For Niko's speakers and my project I'm looking at using the Wattyl , Colourthane paint range on the cabs . Its suited for painting on MDF and ply's but I've been told its the old automotive range . looking at TDA sheets of other brands hardly any are suited for MDF or ply . The colourthane range isn't iso free maybe that helps . I had half a day yesturday and Roger & I got 4 cabs rubbed back and sprayed the rub through edges with U-Pol High #5 high build primer aerosol ,worked a treat So far what I've read , not suited for home use . Looks like you need a booth just for a dust free enviroment so you can set up the air dryers . The clear is still solvent base for panel shops and the Auto industry are the only ones geared up using water based clear . But I could be wrong . They say the pigment colours are so much better ith water based . You would need a gun setup for it ,whch should be a cup & need change . @@Tasebass @@Damhooligan Could you use the water based , base coats at home ? Cheers Mal Edited October 5, 2015 by Malcolm

Damhooligan Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 Could you use the water based , base coats at home ? Cheers Mal Sorry for the slow reply. As tasebass said, can't see why not. But i also can't see why you should either. Only reason waterbased is developed is because it's more environmentally friendly.. It's not better then, just more eco friendly. For the odd garage job that's not an issue. It creates more issues for the smaller jobs. As it makes cleaning guns also more complicated. You have to adjust painting application. Be wary of drying times. Don't get me wrong, i love waterbased paint. But at home i won't use it, to much of a hassle. 2

mwhouston Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I posted earlier a MC stage based on the super expensive AN Silver foil caps currently selling for $427 each. Well based on how incredibly good the MC stage sounded I ordered some AN Tin foil caps. Never heard tin before. Lots of copper but no tin. It is my intention to build another MC stage with the only difference being the the AN tin caps. I sufficient Vishay caps and Nichicon electros to build another but have to hike it to Altronics for another extruded Hammond Al I closure. Along with the caps came the solid copper and Rodium RCA sockets themselves $80. Can't wait to compare the two MC stages.

thesavage Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Hi Guys, Any suggestions on components to use to build a portable bluetooth speaker? I'm not chasing perfect sound rather convenience - any sound is better than not which is what I have a the moment! I'm doing fifo work at the moment so want something for my room and to take into the bathroom so it can't be too heavy! There are plenty of commercial products available but I' rather DIY. I have a sure bluetooth module which I will be using at the heart of the portable speakers. Cheers, Tim
