Nigel, I have no doubt your clients are happy and you conduct your business in a professional manner. That was never questioned and I've never heard anything to the contray with which to make any such judgement on. Sorry if that came across like that, it was never my intention.

I simply do not appreciate having the validity of my findings challenged (repeatedly) with what you perceive to be the shortcomings of my equipment or methodology.

If you doubt the value of the data I have gathered, then all I can ask is for you to present your own. I will be presenting mine to Panasonic. What they do with it will probably be exactly as you say - 'Within tolerance'.

It does however seem like you are finally accepting there is some merit to what I've presented here, so at least we seem to be coming towards some form of understanding.

For those of us further down the food chain, I have just bought a Samsung PS51E531 ( 51 inch plasma) and find the picture quality supurb.

I simply set all the adjustments to 50% to let it bed in and at this stage have no reason to alter those settings.

From some of the agonising I have read above, I'm glad I couldn't afford a Panasonic.

Cheers

Got quoted for $1,888 for a 50" ST50.. Is this a reasonable price?

And is it possible for the NZ models of the ST50 to record to a USB hdd? I've noticed on some overseas reviews it's possible but the Panasonic website does not mention this.

Thanks!

Yes, it will record to a USB HDD. Look at the bottom of this page (click 'Tech Specs' then scroll down to 'Features'. If you're paying cash I would have thought you could do better than that (it lists for only a few dollars more than that on the Harvey Norman website, without any haggling).

Ahh It's so hidden..

Yeah this was at HN.. I think the price I saw was around $1995? Asked the sales person to do me a better price and came back with $1888. I'm not a very good haggler.. not sure if I can get it any lower :P

Visited JB Hifi before I went to Harvey yesterday and asked the guy who I suspect was the electronics manager what the price was for a 50" ST50.. Was told it was $2385.. Asked if they could do it cheaper and was given a blunt "No."

Then went next door to Noel Leeming and asked for the same thing and they said $1999.

$1788 is a good price.

Yep, I hadn't planned on changing tv's but saw it advertised on their website and thought it was meant to be. It's bigger, but only a little better IMO, than the 46"VT20 it replaced (which now lives downstairs for extra Olympic watching and hiding from the wife on Friday sports night) but was close to half the price. It's a cracking tv and I'm very very happy with it (context: I adore the VT20 - way better than any screen I have previously had).

IMO I don't think you can go wrong buying a Panasonic VT or ST screen.

Went and bought the TV after work today (Pay day :D).. Asked for $1800 cash and after a long wait he came back saying OK!

Loving it so far... The features are great especially Youtube for the kid!

Also, after 5 years I finally figured out why my reception has been so poor..

Turned the computer on whilst I had digital reception on and it suddenly turned to custard and artefacting like made with the screen eventually blanking out. Turns out my computer was too close to the antenna wall outlet.. Feel like such an idiot!

Those ferrite core thingybobs that came with the TV fixed that up.. Artefact free digital TV now too! Yuusssss!

The bad news.

HDTVtest have now reviewed the british 42" GT50 and have confirmed my findings with the black level.

There is far too much of it to quote but this sums up the views I've expressed in this thread perfectly.

What we know for sure is this: on a TX-P42GT50 running firmware 1.621, the [Professional] modes – which offer the full array of calibration controls including 10-point white balance, 10-point gamma and a 3-axis colour management system (CMS) for both primary and secondary colours – is handicapped in terms of dynamic range compared to the [THX Cinema] mode.

This leaves us between a rock and a hard place. The [Professional] modes can be calibrated to within an inch of perfection when it comes to greyscale, gamma and colour owing to its comprehensive (and fully functional) calibration suite,
but will exhibit inferior black level
and peak light output. On the other hand, [THX Cinema] will enjoy deeper blacks and brighter whites, yet its colours will be less accurate given the absence of advanced calibration controls in this viewing mode.

So this is no longer a European or Asian problem. This is also true of the VT, so VT owners (or potential owners) here need to take note.

They also finish off by saying that the ST50 represents better value for money, which is precisely how I feel right now.

The good news is that this now has some traction and hdtvtest have a direct line to panasonic uk to get this issue looked into. Their pre-launch 50" model didn't exhibit this issue with the blacks, so we can hope that a wayward firmware has been responsible somewhere and can easily be remedied.
