Doggie Howser Posted October 13, 2011 Author Posted October 13, 2011 I didn't expect to be getting back into HeadFi again. But the Modwright LS100 has a pretty highly rated headphone amp section so I wanted something to test it out. My MS-1 which I got as part of a bundle with the Marshall Major wasn't particularly impressive. Then I heard the Audeze LCD-2 recently. When I compared it to the HE6, I preferred the HE6. But this was the old version. The new v2.. I just heard in isolation. Driven by my iPhone earphone jack. YES! No kidding. My iPhone can drive the LCD2. So I got hooked. I don't have my HE6 here to compare it to the LCD-2 but this thing makes my Quad 12L actives sound bad.
weibchen Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 LCD 3 is announced already, HE6 have to get a integrated amp of at least 15 watts to drive it. Kinda ridiculous but not harm if you already have room for a dedicated speaker amp for the headphone.
Doggie Howser Posted October 14, 2011 Author Posted October 14, 2011 The HE6 partners quite well with the Lyr The LCD3 was just announced and I was aware that it was coming but it's not a replacement for the LCD2. In fact, it's going to cost double that. FWIW, I preferred the HE6 overall but the LCD2 is just great for its easy load that I can almost make it part of a transportable set up. vs a desktop system like with the HE6.
Doggie Howser Posted October 16, 2011 Author Posted October 16, 2011 My "transportable" setup :P The ALO RX II is surprisingly a powerful enough amp to drive the LCD2. I found low gain but setting the volume level high produced a better sound than high gain but lower volume.

Doggie Howser Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 It's been about 3 weeks since I transplanted myself to Sydney. I stayed in a temp accommodation for the first few days so handed some of stuff I couldn't fit with me with chewed who kindly helped store my knick knacks. One of them was the Audeze LCD-3. But I've just moved to a company apartment. It's still not a long term solution and there's no space to set up my second hifi system but I can put up here for 2-3 months so in the interim, it's back to headfi. All I can say is what a relief. Listening to Kit Chan now in the dark, the LCD-3 is only powered by an iPod Classic->Cypher Solo->RXII but it's truly a godsent to fill this hunger. Beautiful.

Doggie Howser Posted June 15, 2012 Author Posted June 15, 2012 Mike said he's got the ML2 Reference almost ready to be shipped out next week. Bhobba said he might loan me the ML2 stands and Mike said he might have a demo of the Bybees integrated with his speaker cables :) Playback MPS5 was shipped out of US on 12 June.

RX III is out. Can it drive the He-6 ? Regards, Joe Ling
Doggie Howser Posted June 15, 2012 Author Posted June 15, 2012 I am waiting for the new Schiit balanced range and spending $ on headphone cables.
Doggie Howser Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 I have been kinda busy with my study system since I got back but only got around to unpacking my Schiit Lyr today and hooked that up to the Playback Designs. I first plugged in the Audeze LCD3 and it sounded quite glorious. Then I remembered I never really compared the LCD3 to the Hifiman HE6 which was my old yardstick. So in went the HE6. Even with the stock cables, the HE6 sounded IMHO better than the LCD3. It was just less veiled and superbly complemented with the Lyr. The LCD2 was always considered "dark" and in some way, the LCD3 made some strides in that direction, but in this current setup, even with the ALO Reference 8 cable, I found I still preferred my HE6. Where the LCD3 shines is how easy it is to drive. With the ALO Cypher Solo and RXII amp, it is a formidable combination.... almost transportable.
5th Avenue Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 I am looking at IEM like either Westone UM3X, W4 or Shure SE535 or Sennheiser IE80 for travelling. Any recommendations Cheers.. :)
Doggie Howser Posted October 24, 2012 Author Posted October 24, 2012 I prefer the Westone 3/4 range. The Westones sound like the UEs but are slimmer and more comfortable. The UM series is Westone's traditional series and has a different presentation.

etnt Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Looks like more brands jumping into head-fi. Martin Logan headphones http://gizmodo.com/5954540/martinlogans-new-headphones-look-like-a-thousand-bucks-but-dont-cost-it
Audio Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 I am looking at IEM like either Westone UM3X, W4 or Shure SE535 or Sennheiser IE80 for travelling. Any recommendations Cheers.. :) I got the IE80.....so-so. My son recommended me to the UE Triple Fi 10. Woh! The sound is very good but I afraid I missed the iPhone control. I saw this model was going at SGD$660 at the airport.....we paid only just over US$200 for this from Amazon. (Audio)
Doggie Howser Posted October 25, 2012 Author Posted October 25, 2012 I like the triple fi sound but it sticks out too much and usually pops out during flights. The Westone 3/4 is much better fitting

(Audio) Demoed the UE900, Shure SE535 & Westone W4 today at Stereo ION Orchard. My preference is W4 > SE535 > UE900. Did not demo the IE80 as took me over an hour for showdown of the 3 (but IE 800 is releasing soon ard USD 1000... :o) http://www.westone.com/music/index.php/products/personal-listening/westone-4.html http://www.shure.com/americas/products/earphones-headphones/se-models/se535-sound-isolating-earphones http://ue.logitech.com/en-sg/earphones/ue900 I like the triple fi sound but it sticks out too much and usually pops out during flights. The Westone 3/4 is much better fitting In term of audio, i prefer W4 for rock ballads...warm fuller mid tones, slightly tighter/more bass, resolution. No edginess of music or vocals at 80% volume compared to the other 2. To me this is my criteria as deal breaker once the rest of audio capability is there. For SE535, lighter bass, wider soundstage & highs compared to W4, resolution is comparable to W4. The chap at the shop says SE535 is more balanced sounding...or lesser bass depending on your preference. Source was mp3 & Flac files through HTC One X with the following tracks; (Not the best choice of music but that's what I got at that time) Sarah McLachlan - Angel 動力火車 - 第一滴淚, 當, & 想你是臨睡的習慣 Alice Lau - 天荒愛未老, 如果你知我苦衷, 我和春天有個約會 Now is to decide whether to ship it in or buy locally. Local price is like > $100 after forex, shipping & GST Black Friday sales is another month away or through Amazon 2 weeks....but let's see if I can resist that long Anybody tried customized fir for IEM for Westone or Futuresonics...heard that its sounds even better due to close fit, but price is almost 2x as u need an Audiologist to make your ear impression & send the impression to the IE maker to mould the final silicone ear piece/tips.
Doggie Howser Posted October 25, 2012 Author Posted October 25, 2012 You mean a silicon custom ear pad for generic IEMs? Or a full custom IEM?
5th Avenue Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Full customs like Westone ES5 or Futuresonics Mg6pro... :)
Doggie Howser Posted October 25, 2012 Author Posted October 25, 2012 I am a JH man (and he started UE before selling to Logitech). So I'd look at something like an active JH16Pro with JH3A active crossovers ;) I am using his former flagship UE11Pro with quad drivers. Still sound excellent. It still hasn't died on me so I can't justify the new JH :( besides I no longer travel to US so never really use custom IEMs and I use full sized cans when I am at home.
