Agree with everyone about Novak and his old feigning injury tricks when he is losing - then miraculously gets back to 100% when winning.    That he makes it so obvious is one reason why fans tend to like the other player - Novak is a dik in this respect.

....

BTW - anyone notice that Thiem does not put a 2nd ball into his pocket for the 2nd serve. He does a Chris Evert and has the ball person throw him the 2nd ball for every 2nd serve.   Never seen a male tennis player do this before.

This is McEnroe at his best: "He had the doctor, He had the trainer. He had the drinks. He had the food. He had the whole kitchen sink".

And Hewitt: "He's probably sick with the scoreline, down a double break here in the third set."

And Djokovic himself: "I can't really explain it at the moment... she (the doctor) told me that I have maybe few conditions  and things like that" and "I didn't have any injuries and it was very strange to me .... my energy completely collapsed."

It was a miracle that he suddenly found all energy after that collapse. Problem is that miracles like this happened so many times. I think Murray has "suffered" this miracle least once, also in an Australian Open final.

As to male tennis players who does a Chris Evert, Thiem is not the only one. Sampras did this too.

Well, what do you know.  I just watched the tiebreak between Sampras and Federer at Wimbledon 2001.

Sampras asks the ball boy for the ball on his 2nd serve.

Can't believe I don't recall that ftom watching Sampras over so many years.

  Thanks

Yes, not surprising to see the old Novak tricks coming out when the match seemed to be swinging away from him. And then he gets miffed when the crowd are supporting Thiem.

It is exactly this that stops me respecting and liking Novak a real lot. I acknowledge that he is one of the greats of tennis but there's something about him that doesn't make me love him......like I love Roger. Roger is the GOAT in so many more ways than Novak or anyone else for that matter. Rafa fans may disagree but Rafa is the GOAT on clay.....and nothing more.

Well clearly the better player won, Jokovich was obviously  rattled by the warning and the 2nd one was a joke after he fumbled his ball and was instantly given another on hitting zero.

Thought it contributed to his losing rhythm with his game over the next set and a half.

Then was rushing his service prep and took awhile to adjust.

Don't get the dislike toward him, many including Roger employ the injury tactic when struggling.

Was a great match anyway, Thiem was unlucky with a few points denying him glory.

IMO, this is a biased post @evil c. Sorry but Roger does not use 'the injury tactic' near as much as Novak.....or the tiresome 'feign of injury' or the even more tiresome 'feign of illness' to gain an advantage.....and this is why many don't at least warm to Novak or like him. All that talent and success but still pulls these displays of 'woe is me'. You NEVER see 'woe is me' or the 'feigning' of anything from Roger.

In regard to the second serving time violation.....when he fumbled , the clock was on one second left.....he had blown it anyway. The umpire was completely correct on this call.....and it's about time Novak's incessant and annoying pre serve ball bouncing 'routine' was nipped in the bud. It's just another tactic he pulls when the chips are down.

Fans love great players who have integrity in everything they do on the court. Novak unfortunately doesn't fit this bill. His talent is unquestionable.....his attitude to fairness is.

Biased??

Nah just not biased against Novak.

Anyway hopefully he'll mend his overbouncing ways after this! ?

What is of paramount importance is that the time allotted for each serve be reduced from 30 to 20 seconds as soon as possible. Ideally it should be no more than 5 seconds between points - we'll get there in due course and as quickly as possible. These "tennis player's" serves are eating up the already endangered advertising time/space. Tennis associations really should do something about this wastage of time. We may yet find a way to do away with the players altogether - for a truly perfectly appointed tennis match, broadcastable at an absolute profit and everyone's enjoyment. Flowing smoothly with 0 seconds between points while the robots trash it out. Umpire can call the shots/points in retrospect during the 5 minute add break scheduled to run after every other point. (this will be an ideal opportunity to oil the robot's joints and bearings/reset any software issues, sweep up any injured spectators while indicating if they did or did not have hospital cover and which plan would have suited them best).

Do you even watch the tennis?     It's been 25 seconds since 2018.

Do you even read what you're quoting?

Yes, I believe it was attempted sarcasm with the first line being totally incorrect.  I sort of gave up reading then since you did not seem to care about the accuracy of the content.

The Men's Player of the Decade: Novak Djokovic

" There’s a narrow truth to the notion that Djokovic is “catching up” to Roger and Rafa. Yes, he trails them in tennis’ most high-profile stat: major titles—Federer has 20, Nadal 19, Djokovic 16. But our obsession with this race obscures the fact that over the past 10 years, Djokovic has passed his rivals by. Since the start of 2010, Djokovic has won 15 majors, to Nadal’s 13 and Federer’s five.  "

He is the player of the decade.....and he will pass Federer in overall days at number one, sometime this year, if he stays there.

However, there's more to tennis greatness than just stats and IMO Roger is still the better player.....not at this point in time of course but over history. Indeed it's all a matter of opinion, but mine won't be changing.

I often think "if players could play themselves, what would be the greatest tennis match of all time?" I can't go past Roger v Roger. The shot making would be breathtaking and the construction of points and eventual winners would be mind boggling.....and there would be net play and volleying.....how refreshing!!??

Has anyone got a link to the post match interview that Channel 9 did with Novak? The one with Courier, Hewitt et al

We were too tired to stay up for it. I watched the press conference, but can't find the Channel 9 one anywhere

  That's no good.

I did see some great ATP tennis on ESPN some 10 days ago from Dubai.

Semis:  Monfils v Djokovic - Gael really should have won, however was not able to convert his chances in the 2nd set. As epic as ATP gets. YMMV.

Final: Tsitsipas v Djokovic -  a decent match, however a routine win for Novak, despite an in-form and slick Stefanos.

Until this morning I was still hoping against hope that Indian Wells ATP event might somehow find a way to go ahead. Now following yesterday's and today's announcements there doesn't seem to be any doubt.

Was really looking forward to it. Even got the ESPN subscription on my FetchTV for the month mostly because of the Indian Wells ATP. Would've been a cracker. Oh well - in the bigger scheme of things, it's merely a sporting event after all...

Interesting move from the French Open in moving from June to Sept.

ROLAND-GARROS 2020: FROM 20TH SEP TO 4TH OCT

https://www.rolandgarros.com/en-us/article/tournament-2020-coronavirus-rescheduled-2a-september-4-october

That's only a week after the US Open finishes, Shane. Doesn't give them much time to adapt to the change in surface from hardcourt to clay, does it?

Cheers,

Keith

Yep, it's going to advantage some and disadvantage others................Roger might play the French this year now. Haven't heard any talk about Wimbledon yet, but it will be next.

I think it's early days to look at any date with massive certainty.

A European football championship (a nations tournament)  has been rescheduled by EUFA from 2020 to 2021. We may yet see a few other tennis tournaments not happen at all this year - similar to Indian Wells.

I think it's a good move for Rolland Garros to claim Sep 2020, but I think they know it's no more than a hope at this stage.

I don't hold much hope for Tokyo Olympics at this stage.
