Sinner v Nadal (French Open)

A great match unfolding. Sinner with some unbelievablle efforts nearly taking the first set, but no match for an in-form and clinical Rafa.

Exciting times.....Tsitsipas and Schwartzman playing the best tennis of their careers. Petra Kvitova and Sofia Kenin playing magical tennis. Clay of the Roland Garros much "wetter" now in Oct compared to the usual Paris summer heat - slowing things down a touch and allowing for an accent on tennis prowes, technique and skill over the raw physical power.

Schwartzman win over Thiem up there with the best classic 5 setter matches I've ever seen.

Lots to like in this postponed Roland Garros 2020....

Lot to like about Schwartzman, one of the shortest guys on tour with the heart of a lion and a serve that belies his size!

Wife and I saw Sinner for the first time recently and were immediately impressed with his maturity and game craft for someone so young.

Definitely exciting times with these two blokes, for the future.

I will have to say that the French Open womens singles final and the womens singles in general this year was just about the poorest quality I have ever watched.    pity Kenin was injured for the final as she would have put up a lot better effort.

The mens otoh has been pretty good. Looking forward to the fin al tonight btween Nadal and Joker.  Really hope Joker can pull out something special to have a chance at beating Nadal.

Everyone and their dog seems to have been hoping for a classic Novak - Rafa match-up in the final and here it is. Though I had one eye lightly trained on the possibility of a generation switch and a possibility of Schwartzman - Tsitsipas final. The old guard still too strong to yield. Wish they had a playoff between two losers of the semis for some increase in the winnings or whatever. Would be super interesting me reckons....

I'll be happy whoever wins tonight, though I think Novak has a bit of an upper hand. Either way hoping for a classic - at least 4 if not 5 sets.

The ladies draw matches were awesome throughout the tournament. Iga Swiatek (at 19 freakin years old seems just like a highschool kid) fully deserved her win over Kenin, as Kenin did over Kvitova. The Argentinian of Ukrainian roots Nadia Podoroska was quite a revelation too. Similar with Schwartzman - Tsitsipas, would love to see a match-up between Podoroska and Kvitova.

Rafa the steamroller and a missing-in-action Novak.

Match bit flat, but you get those more often than the true classic ones in a final I guess.

Well done Rafa!

Yep, zippi, as Grand Slam finals go it was flat, but from a pure tennis POV, great to see Rafa put on a clinic and against the world No 1 thank you!

20 Grand Slam titles for Rafa will stir up the GOAT debate again and if Rafa remains fit, he’ll certainly go past Roger before he hangs up his racquets. I would not be surprised though if Djokovic doesn’t ultimately go past both of them, because even though Rafa seems unbeatable on the French clay, the grass at Wimbledon and the hardcourts in New York and Melbourne, definitely bring Rafa back to the field. For me though, Roger is still the GOAT and I believe that will remain my way of thinking too, because my No 2 is neither Rafa or Novak.?

Cheers,

Keith

Yep, it was very good tennis, but thought Rafa faded in the last few games. I wouldn’t be that quick to write Rafa off as gone though, especially at the French. Soderling beat him there 10 -11 years ago and the only other player to do that, twice now, is Novak.

Glad to see a Tsitsipas v Djokovic final and looking forward to it.

Cheers,

Seeing as this is a tennis talk thread, the Twin Towns Open at Tuncurry on the mid coast of NSW started yesterday and it was great to go locally and watch some very good matches and I'm looking forward to watching plenty more over this long weekend. NSW closed Country Championships are also held here in two weeks at Forster/Tuncurry, so a real treat for tennis fans in this area.👍

Cheers,

AWESOME semis indeed last night!!!!

Couldn't watch live but caught up today.

Tsitsipas and Zverev -  a true making of a rivalry for the ages.

With Nadal 5-0 up in the first it seemed there was surely no way back for Novak.

But a champion's comeback it was indeed. Likewise as Keithy @cheekyboy suggested - wouldn't discount Raffa in the long run - he's surely got a few Slams in him still. Though his style of play doesn't exactly lend itself to longevity and the years are stacking up.

Both classic matches and match-ups.

Soooooo looking forward to the final Tsitsipas and Djokovic.

I think Rafa has at least a couple of good years left, but it is a hell of a grind to win 7 best of five set matches on clay, but I think he has another French Open in him yet. Rafa has had his share of injuries and he is a very physical style of player and he is red lining on every point, but think back to one Jimmy Connors and you could not have got a more physically demanding style, yet he was still playing to a very high level at 39 & 40 years old.

Or a guy called Federer.   40 just afta Wimbledon finishes.

Now, will any of these guys match Muscles in making 2 major finals at age 42?

Yeah, Ken and Roger are good examples at playing well up to and into their 40s, but they don’t or didn’t put anywhere near the physical impact on their bodies with their playing style like Rafa has and Jimmy Connors did, which was the point I was trying to make.

Another player with great longevity while we’re at it was Pancho Gonzales……….check that record out.👍

Well done Novak. Unreal at times.

A great future for Tsitsipas surely. Multiple Slams just around the corner.

Yes, well done to Novak, one hell of a competitor over five sets and I think that was the difference last night. I got to bed around 3:30 and probably should still be there, but glad I sat up to watch.

The win keeps the possibility of a Grand Slam this year alive, so it will be really interesting if he manages a win at Wimbledon. Novak also joins a very small club alongside two aussies, who have won all four slams at least twice.

Cheers,

Keith

There is no doubting Novak's talent and fighting qualities.....it was a great win. What is questionable is his worthiness as a human. I make no apologies that I wish he lost and that he never wins another Slam though I suspect that wish will not be granted.....out of sheer spite.

There you go, zippi, he isn’t a bad guy……….what was just about everyone else thinking?😄

He is right about the wind being disruptive though to the way he plays and it is certainly something that does bring him back to the rest of the draw.

@metal beat Is Roger ‘on the way out’ mate?😉

Hi Keith

Roger could be out, period

Joker is odds on to win another Wimbledon, equal 20 majors with Roger @ Rafa and be in line to go ahead of each of them with 21 majors at the US Open.

Most importantly he would be the first male since Rod Laver to score the Grand slam - all majors in one year.

That would truly be amazing and something that may never be beaten.

C'mon Ash.    Wishing you all the best to win the final tonight.

Yep, Shane, I think I made that point when he won the French and that it would be interesting indeed if he was to win Wimbledon, with the US Open  all that would then be required for a Grand Slam, which as you say, no man has achieved since Laver did it in 1969.

Cheers,

Keith
