But Channel 7, in VIC & TAS decided to start the telecast on 72 while 7HD showed the post match of an AFL game. Surely they could have chopped that crap. And while I was writing this, heard that NSW & QLD switched to 7HD mid way through the second set. Channel 7 still not respecting tennis fans Kayo's coverage of Wimbeldon is even better than Foxtel's! Choices of several (4-5) courts at all times plus highlight packages and interviews available. 1

Unfortunately there was some dispute and Kayo didn't televise the Barry match so we were at the mercy of standard definition 72 till they switched to 70 at 9pm. But yes love the choice normally available ! Barry looked very flat and her ball toss /1st serve deserted her. But after her phenomenal run , she was probably overdue for a lack lustre performance! I didn't know what time she was scheduled, so when it didn't show up on Kayo I didn't check FTA. We are getting our house re-carpeted today so TV was not a huge priority last night. Kayo don't seem to know if they are coming or going. Over the weekend the Tour de France articles in the Herald Sun had watch it live on Kayo ads yet they aren't showing it. I sent them an email and they said SBS have exclusive rights... Fair enough but why advertise you have it? The cycling coverage is the 1 disappointment with Kayo since giving up Foxtel 2 months ago.

That certainly is disappointing for both of us, and anyone else misled by Kayo. Why can't the networks learn to cooperate?? Silly question, gaining an edge over competition!

I was surprised she managed to keep at it for such a length of time and so consistently. Barty was off her game, especially with the first serve and could not lift when it mattered... Yes, most impressive and will be even more if she can replicate against madam "I'm bigger and more important than the game itself". I'll be cheering for Riske... Edited July 9, 2019 by Snoopy8 Typo
Snoopy8 Posted July 13, 2019 Posted July 13, 2019 Not bothering watching final tonight, Serena in the mood to win and I can't stand her! But tomorrow, Federer vs Joker, I want Roger to win but not sure he has enough left?

Full respect to Federer, and really could go either way easily. Certainly hope for a bit of drama and not a damned 3 setter - whichever way it goes. Re Serena - she works on her game more than most and it really shows. Having overcome major obstacles in her career and worked so diligently, she truly deserves all the success. Rarely takes a thing for granted (rarely - not never). It gets a bit boring when she's not really challenged (slam after slam), however she is seriously being put to the test by Halep currently. 1

cheekyboy Posted July 14, 2019 Posted July 14, 2019 What an absolutely sensational men’s final. That 23rd game in the 5th.........incredible! It’s a pity someone had to lose, but well done Novak, Wimbledon number 5 and slam number 16. 5

LHC Posted July 14, 2019 Posted July 14, 2019 No doubt it was a great game. I thought Federer played brilliantly and definitely served better than the Joker. But Federer also had these momentary lapses that was so frustrating to watch, like how he couldn't convert his two championship points, and that missed volley early in the final tie-breaker.

Steve M Posted July 15, 2019 Posted July 15, 2019 (edited) What a fantastic men’s Final last night. Both played at a very high level and Novak deserved to win, such tenacity, to retrieve impossible shots from Roger and send them back with pace and direction. None better demonstrated than by Novak’s neutralising of those two championship points of Federer’s. Yes, Roger sprayed many shots during the match, but if he didn’t play that style of risky game he would have been rolled by Novak in three sets - you have to go out and take it from Djokovic these days, not hope to play passively/safe .... sadly it didn’t quite work out for Federer. . Nigel Posted July 15, 2019 Posted July 15, 2019 (edited) Deja Vu, as i was watching Roger stumble at the end of the 5th trying to serve out the match, I remembered that about 6 or 7 years ago I came to the opinion that Roger is mentally frail. Perhaps the finest shotmaker ever but when the pressure comes on, his error rate goes up. The match seemed to depend on Roger's 1st serve, which is an absolute weapon when it's on, and got him out of some bad situations but failed him also. Also he retracted in the last 2 sets from his new aggressive return-style, which beat Rafa 2 days ago, back to his previous submissive chipping/slicing returns. Even so, he almost got there, but Novak's game appeared to be low risk shots waiting for Roger to error and when Roger's 1st serve let him down in the tie break all over....... mentally, you could see Novak step up at certain moments and showed why he is so hard to beat. Shame Roger doesn't quite have that. I expect that Roger's biography will mention incredible nerves before the big matches..... Ash Barty would have beaten Novak.... Edited July 15, 2019 by Nigel

She sales so close to cheating with her switch to grunting when she wants to and her totally classless attitude to officials , opposition and patrons Luvs bringing up the race card, and now the mother card. She is a classless cow. For me it's anyone but Serena in the ladies. Federer is very frustrating to watch. He had real chances to win in every set today. His First serve and forehand let him down in almost all clutch points. Federer choked on the 2 match points, no doubt about that. No disgrace in that either- shows he is human. Joker had 3 chances and took them all. Hardly missed a first serve when it mattered. Nerves of steel. Great final for the ages. Edited July 15, 2019 by metal beat
blybo Posted July 15, 2019 Posted July 15, 2019 @Nigel Novak's game is built around defence and athleticism. He is the best defender in the business, no doubt about it, but it's boring to watch IMHO. I'd rather see Roger go down swinging than playing %'s like Novak does, it's like somebody has done a "moneyball" type of study on tennis for him and taught him to be effective rather than pretty. Roger has always made bad errors, it's the flawed genius at work, but what a joy to watch. I don't know who I'd follow once he hangs up the racquet. I may just give up on tennis till another wonder boy comes along... or Kyrious grows up. 1
zippi Posted July 15, 2019 Posted July 15, 2019 I haven't seen the final this year due to being ill, however the fact (if true) of Novak being "robotic" and Federer playing "with panache" is fascinating. I specifically disliked FedEx during his domination of a decade and then some - specifically because of being like a robot and playing with no expression whatsoever (panache was not even on the horison). There's no denying Roger is inexorably marching toward the end of his career, and perhaps his age is one of the factors that has precipitated a panached performance. Novak isn't far behind age wise, and this will catch up to him soon down the track, however is still younger nonetheless. Perhaps he's adopting some of Rogers past tactics. Also I remember Djole struggling with stamina and fatigue often 5-10 years ago when his playing style was more of a "take no prisoners" approach, so this may be a part reason too. Also it may be an effect of Ivanisevic joining Novak's coaching team just weeks ago (permanently or not - dunno). Not saying Novak is next Federer - he's not there yet and IMO unlikely to get there, as the landscape at the top of ATP rankings is quite a bit different to 15 years ago. Who knows - I may be wrong about the effect of Rogers age too, maybe it's just the after effect of the duel with Raffa in semis, however wouldn't have stopped him 10 years ago.

Whatever happened to that Cypriot youngster (tall as you like - cannot remember the name, had a hugely successful run in Aus Open this year)? I like the German/Russian Alexander "Sascha" Zverev and also that Viennese guy Dominic Thiem. Both have some got some game. I'm sure there's at least another 1/2 dozen others that promise (personally really love watching both Tsonga and Monfils, but I feel their prime is in the past). I agree bad boy Kyrgious could/would/should be awesome if he smartened up/grew up and really got serious - alas cannot see it happening this century (wish I was wrong).
evil c Posted July 15, 2019 Posted July 15, 2019 I honestly don't get all the negative attitudes toward Novak, maybe it's his Eastern Slavic heritage? Wife and I couldn't really pick a fave, both he and Roger exemplify everything good in tennis. Brilliant repertoire of shots, supreme athletes, impeccable behavior, and not full of themselves like some! One of the best matches you'll ever see, gonna be a hole when the trio retire! 7
