Picked up some nice Tannoys this week.

The cabinets were built by John Randall.

They need a refoam so off to Atilla next week. Maybe a crossover re-cap.

Anyone have any experience with these?

Very good speakers. Easy to drive, make most amps sound good, probably a better overall sound than the 15" HPD's, though the 15's sound great to my ears with classic rock especially.

Can get a bit 'shouty' when driven hard, work great with tube amps.

Enjoy :0)

Excellent info!

Yes I was concerned as I don’t have any tube amps anymore. But planning on pairing with a low wattage vintage Marantz that I have that  @Tubularbells is going to tickle for me.

I think you'll love the midrange, especially in near field listening.

Late at night, I sometimes like to chuck on eg Willie Nelson 'Stardust' on vinyl, through a Sansui 881 ATM and 15" HPD's

The Tannoy's have a "breathy" quality, great for vocal's to my ears.

Always good to have another set of speakers, for a different listening option :0)

They are excellent.I prefer them to the HPD 385s  and probably to the Monitor Gold 12 too.

Really nice with a decent EL34 push pull valve amp.

Mmm excellent choice. Had Zetterlund & Evans in DSD format, but wish the pressings didn't all command such high prices!!

But, yes, hope I'll get the chance to hear some nice Tannoy's like this in the future

ill back your ears up on that ! i have a few pairs of vintage tannoys and they always seem to have a "full" sound which sounds magic on some recordings , they star on vocals and saxaphones ! any shortcomings they do have can be forgiven by how involving they become to listen too , Enjoy [emoji16]

Nice score. I'd suggest doing the surrounds first, then having a listen.

You might not need to recap the crossovers after all.

I would suggest you consider some Mundorf Evo Oil caps for the HF section of the crossover. My crossovers were recapped with Solen fast caps and I wasn’t totally happy. I started by replacing the 3.3uf shunt cap in the HF section with an Evo Oil as per advice from others on forums. The reduction in “shoutyness/honk” in my HPD 385 was immediately noticeable and it made them much smoother to listen to. I later replaced all HF caps with the Evo Oils which to my ears yielded an improvement in clarity and staging.

Replacing the relatively light weight hookup wire inside from the crossover to the cabinet connections is also sonically worthwhile in my experience.

Hope this helps :)

Brilliant thanks!

I would have used Mumford or Jantzen but great to actually have experienced advice. Cheers

i would also suggest that if your having the surrounds done to get the hf driver air gap cleaned and diaphram allignement checked , very common to build up oxidisation in the air gap which causes nasty resonances , also hf ballance is sometimes a bit over the place with old tannoys so at the same time as cleaning the hf drivers can be set up properly providing they dont need any shims added , best to start with having the drivers 100% before touching the crossovers which too yeild good improvements

Cheers for that. I’ll ask Atilla. He was adamant that he has good knowledge of the driver and his work is always A1.

I’ll probably get the crossovers done at the same time anyway.
