s7e6e Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 Good day gents, So recently moved from Melbourne to Adelaide into a flat, made out of cardboard. All of a sudden my system sounds like crap, there's no magic anymore, the base is gone. On top of everything else, powering my power amp trips the main breaker almost every time. Given there are no Naim dealers in Adelaide, is there a Naim enthusiast willing to help me rule out damage to my black boxes by coming over with another Naim power amp / integrated or have me with my pre/power over to his house? Of course either ale or wine will be involved in these proceedings. Thanks a bunch!
FR DRew Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 Jim Tate stereo can't assist? They were Linn/Naim dealers... Or have they closed?
s7e6e Posted September 25, 2019 Author Posted September 25, 2019 Just dropped them an email, thanks FR DRew.
Monster11 Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 Vision Living on Goodwood road are a Naim dealer.
Monster11 Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 Tripping circuit breaker doesn’t sound good. Have you tried a separate circuit?

I'm not sure, at the time I did not have an extension cord that long to connect the system to mains from another room. Edited September 26, 2019 by s7e6e

s7e6e Posted September 30, 2019 Author Posted September 30, 2019 (edited) Still looking for someone willing to help me pinpoint the problem. No Naim owners in SA? Moster11: Vision Living is no longer a Naim dealer. Edited September 30, 2019 by s7e6e

I do know that some Naim gear draws a ton of current on start up and could potentially trip the breaker out. 1
audio_file Posted October 2, 2019 Posted October 2, 2019 It sounds like a problem in your apartment circuit. The power amplifier draws more current than the pre amplifiers and source components, so that could be why only the power amplifier causes a problem. In my experience Naim amplifiers are sensitive to mains noise, and an apartment has appliances from all the neighbours plugged in close by. I found the IsoTek EVO3 Sirius to reduce this noise. I measured my wall outlet at 246V and asked Naim about that as my amplifier shows a range of 220-240V. They said it's good and have tested them on as much as 256V without any issues. I don't know what would happen if the voltage is below 220V though. It might be worthwhile checking what your outlet gives you. One last point: My apartment has only two breakers, both at 10A. This means my Hi-Fi shares power with other things in my apartment. If you only have one breaker, or have the Hi-Fi on the same circuit as other items that draw a lot of power, this could be overloading.
s7e6e Posted November 6, 2019 Author Posted November 6, 2019 (edited) Thank yous go to Marek from Denis White Adelaide for helping me. The apartment is indeed the worst I've ever been in, acoustically. A passion coming to an end... The Naim boxes (Nac 272 + Nap 250DR) are up for grabs in the Classifieds section.
