Apart from being 20v outside spec what would be the other issues using the below Variac on two 400W 220V mono block power amps?

Would the 2kva Variac be suitable to run both amps at the same time?

Any other options?

These are selling on Aust eBay $95 from Aust distributer but sourced from China.

Using a  Variac on a continuous basis is not advised as the contact wipers can eventually burn out. The 2kVA rating is a maximum limit  rated for 60 Hz  and a 220 volt input.  A  better option would be to  obtain a stepdown transformer from an Australian manufacturer  that suits your requirement.   It would pay to check if your amplifiers can be rewired for 110 volt operation as you can  then use 240 : 110 volt transformers which are more abundant and less costly.

Hum is quite noticeable with these variacs. VanArn is spot on with the advice given above. Try Tortech or McChanson for 220 volt stepdowns. If you are thinking the variac path for switching on and listening only try the better ones made in Japan, Slovenia, UK or USA - most of the older ones were over engineered for some level of continuous operation. 2 x 1kVA or a single 2kVA should be fine for both monoblocks.

Good luck!

Yes - missed this one with the 220v output option switch located on the rear. It should also work.

Once upon a time I used a variac on a pair of powered speakers as an interim measure while waiting for a step-down transformer. While listening I wondered if there would be any compromise/s in doing so and I can tell you, the difference weren't subtle. Never again will I entrust that duty to a variac.
