This site will give you the periods that the various Tannoy models were made.   www.44bx.com/tannoy/partnos.html

Certainly can post a few photos up shortly-currently they are in storage but will have them in a few weeks.

Keen to hear peoples thoughts on my original topic!

What gasket and mounting advice is recommended? I read somewhere that one can get quite particular about the right amount of torque… wondering if cork between plywood and driver would be successful?

Original spare parts are a problem and expensive if you actually need them to repair an early Tannoy Monitor Gold ( 10,12 0r 15'').  Some parts are available from Lockwoods in England. The high frequency diaphragms are apparently now sourced from China. As far as repairers go, Garry Cawsey* (Melbourne), LX-4-MAN are worth a try.  John Woodhead builds excellent cabinets; he is also Melbourne based. I prefer enclosures that are designed using the T & S Parameters.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            * He can get the T & S measurements after the Tannoys are repaired and also the impedance and phase graphs necessary to design an improved passive crossover network.

Thanks for the reply there

John Woodhead sounds like a good name for case builders

I disassembled the original cases yesterday as have been moving recently, the old cabinets where chipboard and had begun to crumble due to water damage. I have read that certain plywood is the best for cabinets redesigns?

Also the model is not the 15" Golds sadly-they are the 15" HPD 385/8

Since around 1975 I have listened to my HPD 315 drivers in a Tannoy modified Chatsworth cabinet. I also use Tannoy ST 50 supertweeters. The Chatsworth cabinets are an infinite baffle design, this means that the bass can be somewhat limited, so I added a REL Quake sub bass unit which gives extension. The REL is also an IB design. I much prefer IB designs than ported enclosures.

The Amplifier is a Revox B 250-S.

@LX_4_MAN Looks to be a Legacy Tannoy, Arden perhaps? 🙂. How does it compare to the the HPD units from the 70s?

Fresh in the room ....give me a few weeks with them before I open my mouth 😋 thought I've tried multiple mk1 and 2 ardens so I better try the newies

Lovely pair of 3838's, I'd say they are local krix assembled ones which means the cabinets will be much more solid than any factory tannoy offering of the time (srm15)

What are the single ended amps , looks like 805 output tube ?

Oh I know most Tannoy owners usually have more than a single pair .....I have a feeling there is another photo coming 😉

@LX_4_MAN they are AM music 805's http://www.am-hiend.com/product/805m.html

I have only had them for a couple of weeks and have been impressed so far. Currently swapped in some PSVANE 805 power tubes and they have raised the bar in terms of opening up the top end. I demoed them on some Tannoy Memory's. The GRF cabinet certainly makes a big difference over the traditional Arden style cabinet. Im sure you have already experienced this 🙂

Very nice ! I indeed have had 2 pairs of grf memory's but never got the chance to try single ended .....still on my to do list is a nice single ended amp on the Tannoys 🤪

How's the Glennies  settling into their new home ?

Playing my Monitor Gold 15s with my old Trimax EL34 monoblocks. Contemporaries playing together! Both from around 1967.I just got the Trimaxes back from a complete check up and fine tune. They have come back sounding superb.

A while back I bought a Cayin A88T  valve amp which is very well regarded. Some people seem to prefer them to their McIntosh 275s .Very decent sounding modern valve amps but the Trimaxes are substantially better sounding.Something a bit special about them from the textured rhythmical bass ,sweet and expressive midrange and big 3D open sound stage. And a great reminder of when we used to make great things in Australia.Nearly everything in it other than a couple of replacement electrolytic caps is Australian made.I guess I should get some  NOS Australian EL34s to complete that.

Both Tannoys looking fantastic. I agree on the synergy of EL34 and the timber cabs. Here are my 315’s and 20W uesugi bros amp in a new space.

My 1988 Tannoy Little Gold Monitors has split its cloth suspension. I believe they are K3149. My repairer has ordered parts but its been a while now.

Has anyone else had this problem and can share advice and experiences?

Thanks,

Your repairer might have opted to replace the cone assembly rather than just the split cloth surround. This is the neatest and safest repair method. Unfortunately, Tannoy parts are basically aftermarket replacements as the original factory parts are no longer available. He may be trying to seek supply from Lockwoods in the UK which can be a frustrating and expensive experience. I have come across the splitting problem with what is called a  "M" profile cloth surround and I would suggest that a more conventional 3 or 4 groove cloth surround might be a solution if you wish to retain the original cone.

Thanks. He is repairing my Bryston amp as well and don't want to hassle him with questions. The surrounds have gone dry and hard.
