Congratulations, very cool little speakers

I'd be interested to hear your impressions once they've had a chance to burn-in.

Hi all, I'm needing a little help from the Tannoy brains trust in the forum.

Does anyone know you what are the HF+/- and LF+/- 4 pin wiring connection pls?

Posted (edited)

Using your photo as a reference,  the bottom ( widest apart) socket pins are the connections that go to the bass speaker section of the Tannoy DC.  The bottom  left hand one is the take off point for the blue wire that goes to the tag for the voice coil flexible braid and the right hand one  ,  a brown lead, goes to the other  flexible braid tag. The latter  is the positive terminal for the bass speaker section.

The closer spaced socket pins  are for the HF compression unit. The left hand upper one is  the  negative connection and it  is usually an orange pvc  covered wire that  goes to the HF unit. The upper right hand socket pin is the HF positive, which is usually a green pvc covered wire.

One  of the weaknesses  with the arrangement that Tannoy used for this  crossover  is the  use of common earthing via the 3 wire cabling to the 4 pin plug and the pcb layout with its thin tracks.

Hi @VanArn, after a lot of head scratching and looking through different photos on the net and my own drivers, I seen to have to come to the same conclusion which seems to be in line with your description. Thank you so much for your reply!

Hi

I have an opportunity to pick up some mint 12" Golds, I was wondering what's people's views on them and what they are worth? These will be my first dual concentrics, so i'm keen to get my purchase correct from the start.

I will be listening to jazz, latin and other world music on them and have other speakers for the gritty heavy music ( Wharfedale e 70's).

Thanks in advance for your wisdom.

Cheers

Stew

The 12 inch Golds are quite good but I think you are better off spending more and getting the 15 Golds.Although that also means using much bigger boxes which might not be possible. You can certainly get a nice sound from the 12 Golds. From my experiments they seem to sound best in an Onken style box of about 150 litres.

Thanks for the words of wisdom. So I can fine tune my search, what would be a reasonable price for 15' Golds?..... and what would be your upper limit on 12s?

Prices seem to chop and change a bit. Some people pay too much for them and then that can distort the market for a while.Best value by far is HPD 315s which  are really good and which you should be able to get for around $1500.Or a really good pair for$2000. I am guessing the 15 Golds around twice that and 12 Golds more like $2500?

I have not kept track of prices recently though.

I'm using 15" Monitor Reds with a PP 6550 valve amp (25 watts per channel) and am blown away with how good this combination works together.  You don't need much power to run these speakers so my amp is a bit of overkill. Tannoy xovers were recently upgraded with Mainly Tannoys VS Clarity ESA xovers and I'm rapt with the improved sound over the original xovers which are over 50 years old.

I joined the club today. @Lx4man kindly met me halfway and we did a very discrete and not-at-all-dodgy-looking handover at Bacchus Marsh station:

Here are the DC10t pair in their new spot. Still jiggling with position and toe-in, but man, have these beasts got some character and presence. Even Mrs Tel was suitably impressed:

Thanks again, Alex. Really decent of you for all the effort you went to.

Awesome. I have eyed off the Edinburgh’s a few too many times.

At least the kinda sorta suspicious meet in the car park looks like you could be meeting for something other than hifi (tell me those cars weren’t planned...) ;)

I figured Mrs Tel's bright blue Focus RS would be thought of as innocent as nobody would be dumb enough to do a drug meet to exchange a kilo of hallucinogenic frog essence in that. Probably not the case with my other car: a fully murdered-out black on black with added black Audi RS wagon. With the full mother-in-law glass all round it is easily mistaken for a mafia staff car.

As for Alex's car, we used to call that colour ASBO orange in the UK (ASBO is similar to an AVO here in Oz). 😆

Was a pleasure to welcome you to the tannoy cult and tannoy pages here, the dc10's were an absolute treat and never loosing the classic big tannoy sense of scale ........our innocent meeting was just to exchange some speakers guys ....nothing suspicious at all about two bright turbo focus's at a train station in the middle of nowhere

Welcome @El Tel to the club and congrats on the DC10T purchase. I've listened to those speakers in the flesh and they did not disappoint one bit, beautiful natural voicing typical of the Tannoy house sound. Enjoy them to the fullest. Cheers

Shout-out to the Tannoy Massive... I'm in need of some guidance.

I'm loving the presence of the DC10Ts. They are fabulous. My issue is that I need to find a mechanism for better stability. Spikes aren't really doing it and neither is going for the old school Blu-Tak under the speaker to steady them approach. I note that there was a DC10Ti version that came with a well designed plinth, but my Google-fu is not helping me. I would expect anyone with the Ti version to not want to just sell off the plinths, but I also can't find any info on whether I might be able to procure them elsewhere through official or unofficial channels.

I need to widen the foot print of these beasts for stability purposes and the plinth - or something similar - would work well. I can't really go the Gaia iso-acoustics route as that just increases the height and raises the centre-of-gravity which I want to avoid. (I have 3 cats and one is stupidly inquisitive - I just know it's a matter of time before she wants to suss-out what is up there. Widening the footprint would help enormously).

I would be grateful for any pointers on the kit or any other ideas. Please bear-in-mind, I have zero fabrication skills - I spent 30-odd years of my career tippity-tapping on a keyboard...

Thanks in advance.

At $132 for 2 sets, (and seeing Alex giving it a thumbs-up too), it's probably worth a go. Just bolt into existing spike-threads on the bottom of the speaker I presume?

Thank you for the suggestion.

They only come with timber screws, but I found the right thread screws, with allen key heads.

Just needed to pull out the cordless drill to open the holes up just a touch on the outrigger feet to fit the threads, but they are solid and now the only way they will tip is if I want them to.

So I have been running the Mini's in pretty well over the past couple of weeks and I gotta say, that mid-range, wow!

Never found the Cheviot's to be lacking in this department, but the Mini's are so clean and clear in the mid-band, it's really eye opening.

Having said that, they don't have nearly the same sense of scale and don't do rock like the Cheviot's do, but yeah, got a nice little vocal speaker to listen to.

As some of you may of noticed that some of my collection of 11 pairs of tannoys has been painfully parting ways and  hitting the market to fund and make some room for what I would consider to be my end game tannoys,  , last night I finally got them downstairs and into a rough position ! Now I just need to run them in as they've seen little use 😃

Wow congratulations!!! They are majestic looking speakers that's for sure.

I'll be curious to hear your thoughts once you've had a chance to run them in. :party

Thanks Allan! They look even better in the flesh ! Once I've moved a few more pairs of speakers on I'll hopefully lift them up onto some granite slabs and do some serious listening! Very happy from what I've heard so far!

Those would be one of my favourite cabs by their appearance, very nice.

This arrived today so keen for a browse through. Bought primarily for this section ?

Fingers crossed might have some hpd315’s coming my way in coming months. They will be trialled in the scales up Cornetta, don’t your worry...

Ash

I was wondering what other plans are in this book? Are there any that would suit Monitor Gold 12s? Given the book is in Japanese, are plans easy to follow?

Thanks in advance for your feed back.

Cheers
