Guest GoingForward Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Hi all, I thought I might share my current listening setup made up of a pair Tannoy K3838.
kwtools Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 Here we go sharing my experience in this thread with a DIY pair of back loaded horn 12 inch MG Tannoy enclosure designed and made by myself. Of course I didn’t invent it but much time had been spend on searching for spin-offs and past success stories. All parts were sub contracted out for CNC machined and assembling was done in my garage. Each and every piece of timber is of European Birch ply and was a gamble. Spend many tedious hours putting the bits together, sanding and polishing on something of unknown and untested. The hard part is when about three quarter of the parts are assembled it gets bulky and too heavy for an old retiree like me. Flipping and moving it around requires the help of my son. This is my first attempt designing and building a speaker enclosure but it finally paid off and absolutely happy with the result with great satisfaction and risk worth taking. As for the tweeter, I listened to some factory 10 and 12 inch Tannoy with Tannoy 100 and 200 tweeters and I like it personally. So adding a pair of tweeter is the direction I’ll like to go and a pair of Elac 4pi Plus.2 super tweeter was added in the hope of adding more life and soundstage as it’s an omni directional (circular dispersion) unit. Personally I was very happy with the whole experiences. 5 1 1

A similar pair of Tannoy speakers featured prominently on Adele's music video "When We Were Young" recorded at The Church Studios in the UK. It's funny actually watching the video again, looks like the camera person is trying to capture the speakers best angle more so than Adele's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDWKuo3gXMQ Edited January 29, 2021 by Willmax 2

What is valve amplifier is the one in the picture? It somehow reminds of those old Luxman/Lux kit styling. Edited February 1, 2021 by Willmax

foryou Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 Does anyone upgrade the original crossover ? Should I just recap the original one or get the new one form mainlytannoy ?
Willmax Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 (edited) I tried his custom crossovers with the Clarity Cap ESA with my Berkeley HPD385, I didn't really like and ended up returning the crossovers. I have since tried a recapped original crossover which sounded a lot better. My suggestion would be to recap one of the crossovers and compare to the other one still with original caps. Willmax Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 @foryou the mainlytannoy crossovers are a good option for those who do not have the original ones.
kwtools Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 I recapped the original crossover as well with best parts I could find and happy with the result. 1
Guest GoingForward Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 Hi all, looking for some advice on repairs from the Tannoy brain trust. Noticed today one of my K3838 drivers has a crack in the surround and there is small gap. Does anyone have any recommendation on a reliable repairer or a Tannoy doctor in Vic Regards Simon
VanArn Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 Atilla Tanka or Garry Cawsey are the usual candidates for speaker repairs. Be warned the cost of the special Tannoy surrounds is on the high side and they should be coated with a special sealant coating when they are replaced. The corrugated cloth 'spiders' may also require attention.

Another option is Tom Manning from Speakerbits. Edited February 5, 2021 by Willmax
kwtools Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 I did recapping more than 10 years ago and can’t remember what I replaced with but I use troelsgravesen web site as guide together with the cross references of the original (values) I just bought the premium quality mostly Japan and U.S. made. For goodness sake never buy any made in China!!! Parts are cheap even the best of the lot. I am afraid that is all I can help 1

BioBrian Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 I did this back in 2013 for my HPD 315A drivers. Boxes were as per Tannoy designs that came with drivers. The XO resistors fell apart every time I tried to move them; the connections and wiring were all pretty bad, so I did the full monty. All Jantzen parts. Inspiration sources were Troels Gravesen, Hilberink.nl, a guy in UK, and was it Peter Campbell in Perth? 1
