Following on from the GTI post, numbers for the R are even more impressive for a stock engine apart from their R600 intake.

373 neddies at the wheels and 522Nm at the crank.

Looks so smooth.

No turbo rush, looks like a v8 type power delivery. Quick spool, but I wonder if they are holding the turbo back.

$61k+ for a GTI

And forget about an R. No stock (well 2) and dealers are asking stupid money for them. Have seen demo's (and who in their right mind would ever buy a demo) going for $80k and more.

They are probably still exploring the limits of the new Garrett and Continental turbos.

And the pistons.

Thank you,  just wondering what was the drive away cost of GTI 7.5 before sold out? Was there any extra features in comparison to old and new GTI?

If possible please.

It's a tad complicated with the Mk7.5 because if you include the TCR which we won't here there were three of them.

2017 Golf Mk7.5 GTI Facelift with 162kw/350nm, 6 speed DSG/Manual, 2017 Golf Mk7.5 GTI Facelift Performance with 169kw/350nm, 6 speed DSG/Manual, LSD and 2019 Golf Mk7.5 GTI with 180kw/370nm, 7 speed DSG,  LSD

The pick of the bunch was the 2019 model which also gained the bigger R brakes, DQ381 7 speed wet clutch DSG, LSD, digital dash and oddly in the one that I ended up with some Clubsport S bits, like thicker sway bars, etc.

I paid $46k drive away.

This last build is basically what the Mk8 is engine/gearbox wise except they've changed the turbo brand.

What the Mk8 gains is a new VDM  (Vehicle Dynamics Manager) system which ties together stability control, the electronic XDS differential lock and the adaptive damping.

The Mk8 also gets some suspension tuning with slightly stiffer springs and bushing updates as well as the Audi alloy front subframe.

It also gains nearly 100kg which I still can't work out.

It also gets a whole new interior and dash which you either love or hate apparently.

Thanks again, so it's around 15-16k more than the last generation Golf GTI 🙂

With a bit of help from the UK some of the locals are exploring the tuning possibilities of the Gen 4 EA888's.

The numbers are impressive for a stock engine and with it's bigger turbo and far better intake geometry there's probably more to come.

MK8 Golf R vs Modified MK7 GTI [The Dream Crusher]

The slightly wider and lower profile 19" do have an advantage on the track so it would have been interesting to see the lap times with identical tyres.

Hopefully they didn't just add power, starts to become a one trick pony at this stage.

Need to add some handling credibility to deserve that Nurburgring mode

Cosmetic only with the same specs as the recent Mk8 Golf R 20 Years with it's 245kw/420nm.

Mind you that's no slouch as it lapped the Ring in 7:47:31 which is only a 1/10 sec slower than the mighty Mk7 GTI Clubsport S from several years ago.

With it's proper rear diff the Mk8 R is the first R to be quicker around a track than a same generation GTI fitted with the same engine/gearbox, in this case the Mk8 GTI Clubsport.

Sadly we probably won't see any of these special R's here.

Or the Mk8 GTI Clubsport for that matter.

2023 Volkswagen Golf R 20 Years price and specs.

$77,490 plus on-road costs, 50 only, 32 blue and 18 white.

Seems reasonable for exhaust/sunroof/HK sound and minor power increase.

My neighbour sold his standard R after 6 months, said it was "just boring". Replaced with  JCW Clubman - did not realise these are also AWD.

It's still a tad pricey even with it's $6k Acrapovic exhaust. Sunrooof and sound will cost you an extra $3k.

In the ongoing conflict between GTI and R owners the claim that R's are boring is often said but of course ignored.

The problem with R's is that at sensible speeds on public roads they're not very challenging but that suits a lot of people.

Ridiculous pricing in my opinion. Agree with ArthurDent that better options are available for that price.

I think you can no longer order an RS3 due to supply issues

It was decidedly iffy when Mrs Tel enquired about changing her car last year for an RS3. We went to Audi Doncaster in early April of '22 and they said they were facing a 2 year wait for the hatchback due to some assembly being done in Ukraine. Sedans were a mere 18 months back then. Mrs Tel ordered a A45 instead which still took 11 months to arrive.

I had a 2016 RS3 and it was amazing fun. The 5 pot is a real character.

Was this German market only? The straight currency conversion to AUD doesn't mean much here.

They are trying to make it special, i can appreciate that. The Golf R is extremely common these days, something rare is a good way to go.
