The Australia tax is alive and well 🙂

Only for some makes. We've been treated pretty well when it comes to VW pricing here up till now when compared to the UK/Europe. Not as good as the US but then they always get lower spec models.

I certainly can't complain about the 7.5 R pricing I received.

The new shape for the R looks very good, but still not keen on the dash and no buttons.  I have a feeling an 8.5 will come out with a few buttons :twitch:

Nor I on my 7.5 GTI  facelift/performance, whatever you call it, the one with all the extras. Neddies, torks, LSD, bigger brakes, some Clubsport bits, etc. Cost 34,000 pounds in the UK which at the exchange rate at the time was oz$62,000. Drove it out of the dealer for $46k which is about what they're now going for on the used market.

I'd settle for rotary knobs for the volume control and temperature.

curious piece here from top gear...

https://www.topgear.com/car-news/opinion/opinion-vw-golf-r-too-sensible-its-own-good?

"Opinion: is the VW Golf R too sensible for its own good?

Let’s examine why the 316bhp AWD super-Golf couldn’t see off a Hyundai costing half as much"

if they are talking opinions, Personally... on the 4 aspects mentioned... am fine with the seats... velour is good :D better than the fake carbonfibre and very bland seats they had before ...the akrvpovic exhaust is fine too... the look is a bit meh...well its no different to much of golf Rs prior.. and no if had the car woudl probably never actually use the drift mode :D

bizarre they side stepped on the price ... which is probably the biggest issue anyone likely have with it ... :)

I'm also keeping my Final Edition with Remus exhaust (louder and more horses)

Mine is Lapis blue and before that I had Wolfsburg Edition also in Lapis blue.

The 7 and 7.5 still look good and great value for money.

For not much more money, a couple of $k you can get a 2022 Audi S3.

Also hobbled with a 400nm spec engine.

Strangely the Golf R wagon gets the full 420nm so despite the extra weight it's almost as quick as the hatch.

from someone checking the ..dealer delivered price....

"Just called Sydney City VW, and the Golf R is from outrageous A$81000,00 drive away without options"

so option them up an likely looking at paying luxury tax on a golf :D this is bizarre...

and from someone who bought a fully optioned mk7.5 ?

"I paid $55k for my 2020 MK7.5 R – fully optioned, brand new. (Full RRP drive away was 55k, with sunroof + audio 58k... negotiated down to 55k.)"

Crazy pricing  - over 70k for a R.

https://www.drive.com.au/news/2022-volkswagen-golf-r-price-and-specs/

More than happy to stick with my 2 year old 7.5 R.

Interesting email from VW regarding the R and Tiguan R  - both in show rooms April 2022.

Production update
mail?url=http%3A%2F%2Fimage.email.volksw
As you may already be aware, there is a global semi-conductor shortage affecting the automotive industry. In order to get this remarkable performance vehicle to you on time, the decision has been made to initially accept the 400Nm version of the 2.0 litre turbo petrol engine – not the 420Nm version with petrol particulate filter as originally planned. That applies to the Tiguan R as well.
mail?url=http%3A%2F%2Fimage.email.volksw
In reality, and certainly in daily driving, this change will be extremely difficult to discern on the road. The reduction of 20Nm of torque equates to a 0.1 second increase in the 0-100km/h sprint time for a possible 4.8 seconds. Nevertheless, with an unchanged 235kW, this remains by far the most powerful factory produced Golf ever made.
mail?url=http%3A%2F%2Fimage.email.volksw
Our priority is to avoid more production delays, however we recognise this may come as a disappointment to some. For that we apologise. If you have already placed a deposit with your preferred Dealer, you’ll of course be entitled to a full refund should you wish.

Thats nuts. In Dec 2020 I was quoted $82k for a brand new RS3 Carbon.

Shortages etc. have inflated new car prices, need to wait 12-18 months to return to oversupply conditions.

Even the Yaris GR pricing is now ridiculous.

oh wow ! Puts in perspective ! Given choices I’d grab the carbon :D

I am so glad I bought my car when did few years ago. I reckon it’s covid but also car makers upping existing costs to fund the electric car they’ve got to get out over coming years. Would be a huge R&D and tool up cost. The electric cars them selves can’t just carry cost for all that …

Thanks to COVID and 2 separate Semiconductor Factory fires,  it’s now appears that AKM may never recover!  Renesas however I believe is now back on line….  Toyota has announce they are back on track to produce 800,000 units from 400,000.   B4 this it was 900,000 units annually.

Yay pricing has been released, but limited, read that as none in stock, not until late this year. $72,767 driveaway at my local dealer as I sure as hell don't need a sunroof. Less than I was expecting and we are getting the full Euro spec 235kW and 420Nm, not a derated version as well as a proper AWD system at last.

Whilst there may well be a Mk8.5 R (and GTI) I think the current dash/switch layout is here to stay.

$73k driveaway is way less than I was expecting as $80k plus is what I thought it would cost.

We are getting the full Euro spec 235kW and 420Nm as well as a proper AWD system at long last.

And $73k isn't that bad considering the Mk8 GTI comes in at $63k once you add in the oddly named "Sound & Style" package which you need to in order to get Adaptive Chassis Control aka DCC and a HUD.

Saw a white one of these at the shops today.

That spoiler is huge and looks horrible.

The exhaust 'outlets' are also disappointing, the MK7 did a much better job at this.

Front looks good though

I think the new R is just getting to close in price to the Audi RS3. The new R is super quick for a Golf but not near the new RS3. $70-$80k isn't a good price point to be. It's kinda in the middle. I think $65k is about where the R should be max.

My money will be going on one of three cars depending on what I'm allowed to spend. A Hyundia i30 Sedan N at $56k, a Audi RS3 at $109k or a BMW M3 X-Drive at $195k.

Nothing against the new Golf R, they look and perform amazingly, I just think I'd be more inclined to spend a little more to go up or save and go down.

The cheapest 2022 Audi RS3, the sportback, is over $100k driveaway and that's without options.

You can add another $24,550 on options if you want.

Yeah sorry, I just added to the post. Yeah it's a fair step up I guess but what a beast you're getting for the money. I should really buy an R to stick to the family tradition. My grandmother had a Super Beetle Type 1 (1972) and my grandfather a VW Type 3 Squareback 1600.

I think my grandfathers parents also had Volkswagons, they were Swedish. My mother had Golfs of different sorts for many years until she went to Toyota. The old man always had company cars, fords and Holdens mainly.

It is one hell of a car and the new rear diff solves previous models understeer issues.

That's the amazing thing. They've managed to fix all the previous problems, made it better AND made it faster. What the hell!

Oh and my second eldest son drives around in a Golf Gti Mk5 with a stage 2 tune.

0-100km/h in a consistent 3.7 seconds and it also goes around corners rather well.

7:41 around Nurburgring which is a class record apparently so almost worth the money they're asking.

It should be pointed out though that to set that record it had the pricey RS Sport suspension package fitted and also ran semi slicks.

The Mk8 R does get you most of the way there,  0-100km/h in 4.1 seconds and 7:51 around Nurburgring for less than 3/4 of the cost.

A bargain 😉
