Just at my work (white collar job) there are 8 utes, 4 SUV and just 2 sedans. Only one of which is FWD..................so guess what I drive ??

Expand The ranger is 5.4mtrs long and comes with a tow bar, the back seat are limited, the history with rangers is that they are just as unreliable as the Mondeo, transmission failures, one colleague has had 3-4 transmission replaced in one and 2 in the latest Ranger he has. At 5.4mtrs it’s not exactly ideal to be going into the CBD and parking it, you’ll cycle around and struggle to find that it fits on the street, at under 5mtrs in length which is the old commodore or Falcon, you’ll guarantee to find street parking, but at 5.4mts its possible the longest Ute for all of them. Even some private parking in the CBD such as Secure Parking you’ll struggle to squeeze that in. In most places the front or back will overhang out of the spot guaranteed! And risk people damaging it! There’s no parking sensors in either of them, just a reverse camera, at least the Mondeo has sensors for from and back! So I. Going to have to get out of the vehicle and judge the safe distance for contactless parking initially. Not sure how the boss is going to park this vehicle.

A bit like when I was in the WRX club, several members were continually having clutch or gearbox issues when the vast majority did not. They just had no sympathy for the drivetrain and then called it weak when it blew up. Yes they are bloody big cars, but designed to haul the gear you carry, whereas the Mondeo isn't a heavy hauler. I remember the 306 s16... its not thing the guy was punting around and can see in photos its completely stripped roll bar, clearly track tyres/wheels brakes suspension mods and such and not sure what all done. strip car back take 300-400kg off a car and that in itself makes a huge difference to a car. let alone driver skill and how well conditions suit and such. its the kind of stuff missed in comparisons, not to say all these car are all that suitable for this kind of thing anyway. my car for instance, i know folk do track it, and minimum it needs brakes usually wheels and suspension needing some attention. but stock its not really built for the track. same goes with say golf gti posted here, as a prior owner there is no ways thats setup for a track. doesnt mean cant go around a track, theyre more every day cars and i could just think of other far better choices in stock cars to take there in say mazda mx5 / fiat 124 or toyobaru brz/86. In the front wheel drive something like the megane trophy or Hyundai i30N. would i want to live with these kind of cars day to day ? nup rather my jeklly and hyde car that can spend 12-14 hours driving in comfort on a variety of roads and conditions ... and flick switch into sport, but not like expecting it then transforms to be track ready or want to take it there for setting any records and such

Expand good question ! the point ? who knows ? perhaps like the thread title ? dont get sucked in ... but could be for those that sell their FWD cars for AWD or something else ? or perhaps what you need to do with a garden variety golf GTI to take aorund a track ? yeah pull out the back seat a light weight battery, whole aluminium front sub frame and whole number of "other tricks " https://www.motor1.com/news/130577/vw-gti-clubsport-nurburgring-record/ "Well, the Clubsport S is no ordinary GTI. Well, the car builds on the existing 265-horsepower GTI Clubsport but with a lightweighting regiment and even more power. The 2.0-liter turbo-four engine gets 310 hp, while the back seats have been removed, a lightweight battery installed, an aluminum front subframe fitted, and a pair of lightweight race seats bolted in up front. Along with other tricks, that trims the Clubsport S’s curb weight by about 66 pounds versus the non-S model. Nineteen-inch wheels wear Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires, and a special “Nürburgring” mode in the driving profile selector adjusts the car’s suspension and engine for optimal performance on the challenging track." what did i say about the stuff that's missed in these things well its not unusual really when comes to Nurburgring records ..... and oh yeah clearly driver had nothing to do with it
ArthurDent Posted May 3, 2020 Author Posted May 3, 2020 (edited) "A limited-run model introduced earlier this year, the Clubsport S is limited to just 400 units. It builds on the regular Golf GTI Clubsport but goes for all-out track performance. The 2.0-liter turbo-four engine gets amped up to 310 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, all channeled to the front wheels by way of a six-speed manual transmission. To help optimize how much acceleration that power creates, Volkswagen put the GTI Clubsport on a serious diet that shed 55 pounds; the S does without a back seat, a center armrest, and sound insulation, plus uses aluminum brake components, an aluminum front subframe, and a lightweight battery."
