JakeHC Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 Hi all, Hopefully this is in the right place. I've got the opportunity to purchase a set of Bose 601's. I've scoured the forums and they seem to get some pretty good reviews. I know Bose can be quite overhyped though. Are there any speakers around the 1k mark that would clearly outperform these? For what it's worth, I'm currently running an Integra DTR-6.8 amp with Wharfedale Atlantic AT-500 towers plus sw150 sub. Mainly used for listening to vinyl. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

david j Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 (edited) Series 111 probably better choice had a pair sold them a couple of years ago Edited May 12, 2020 by david j

I'm not familiar with that model but in general, you won't find a lot of love for Bose on hifi forums. Are you considering Bose just because you have an opportunity to buy them or because you've heard and like them? As an aside, your current speakers seem to be pretty decent but you are driving them with an AV receiver. In general this is sub-optimal for stereo listening. Maybe try a dedicate 2-ch amp with your current speakers and see what difference that brings

And if you don't mind me asking, how much did you sell them for? 3 minutes ago, sir sanders zingmore said: IAre you considering Bose just because you have an opportunity to buy them or because you've heard and like them? It's the opportunity but haven't heard them yet. I've heard quite a few negative things re: the wharfedale's so figured that'd be the first component to upgrade. That's true, the current set up has been hobbled together from gumtree pick ups. I'll have a look around and see if I can find a decent 2-ch amp around.
david j Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 I don't really want to sell any hifi I've ever bought but like a lot on here too much gear some must go I bought when i was young they served me well and sold them easy .on ebay not here.Think I got $1600 for them they were mint had them sitting in the back room for years....plenty of better options these days
Guest DrSK Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 (edited) These are well over budget but my advice would be keep saving if this is an option. Some absolute bargains come up relatively speaking. Occasionally his ML2+Rs have come up circa $2k. You can buy a lot worse than Mike Lenehan's stuff for $20k. Unless boomy muddy sound is your thing. Buying his stuff second hand if possible, you could spend the next 5 years or more upgrading everything else and still be happy with his speakers. Edited May 12, 2020 by DrSK
Al.M Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 (edited) Depends how you listen to music normally, the Bose are not very directional whereas others give a much better sound directionally and more detailed sound in the centre stereo position. Many other options and much newer condition for $500-1000 like Krix Esoterix and Monitor 250, Mission 753, Ascension, Whatmough 201, Celestion, Spendor BC1, Proac Towers and Studio 1, Jamo 707, JVC sk700 & 1000, Kef 104ab etc. Edited May 12, 2020 by Al.M

Yeah definitely quite a bit out of my price range. But it'll be good to look into these. Thanks! 19 hours ago, Al.M said: Depends how you listen to music normally, the Bose are not very directional whereas others give a much better sound directionally and more detailed sound in the centre stereo position. I was thinking if I got the Bose speakers I'd be able to drop it to a 2.0 set up rather than a 2.1. In my head, they look like they'd be much better than what I've currently got but I guess I won't know until I actually here them. I'll look into the speakers you've listed, thanks!
Powerslave Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 Not sure what your paying but my Brother purchased a set for 300$ in Brisbane and he loves them. Not sure on the series or what they sound like either

I'll let everyone know how I go, thanks so much for the advice.
JakeHC Posted May 20, 2020 Author Posted May 20, 2020 Hey everyone I ended up going to demo the Bose 601's tonight and $600 later they ended up coming home with me. The guy had been the sole owner and kept them in great condition. From first tests, the sound is clearer but I felt like I may have preferred my wharfedale's sound. Hard to tell at this time of night though.
