MTsoul Posted June 10, 2020 Posted June 10, 2020 I haver plenty of vinyl, and far more music uploaded to Google music. With YT Music taking over soon, I'm not happy with the offering. My general plan is to get a DAP and rotate music on it. I'm just wondering if there is another cloud upload solution similar to Google Music, or if I need to use Google Drive maybe? Or do I need to go down the route of multiple hdds and backups in the home... My main objective is to not subscribe for a music service to listen to my own files.

Although I never use it as such, my NAS is a WDMyCloud which, if I read it properly, I could access on a portable device (phone, I suppose) when I am out and about. Or I could be wrong. I guess I was hoping there was another google music service that allows me to upload my own music files, organises them and does album covers etc and is free. Damn, google music was good.

Have to admit that I wasn't even aware that Google Music operated that way. I assumed that it was just another streaming service in competition with Spotify, Tidal and the like. Was it a lack of sufficient paying customers did it in? Surely an investment into a NAS would make better sense, though? How many times would you want to upload your entire music library, only to have to do it all over again, because your platform of choice disappears into the vast bulk of thin air that makes up a cloud?

Maintaining a Raid configuration to prevent data loss when hard drives fail, and backing it up to the cloud is too much time and effort for me.

Forgive me if I'm wrong here, but I don't believe anything has changed in the transition from GPM to YouTube music regarding free account uploads. You can still upload 100,000 songs for free on YouTube music and still upload FLACs, as far as their website leads me to believe. I know for a fact you can listen to your uploads with a free account, I'm doing it currently. Unless your issue lies with the new UI? My understanding is that none of the current cloud offerings (that I have seen) will let you play/stream while the files are remote. i am sure someone could offer this. It would be like a virtual NAS. 1

RockandorRoll Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 I wasnt aware of how good Google Music was until it was gone. I had no idea you could upload your own library and it would catalogue everything etc. Im going to try with YTM for a bit and see how it works.

RockandorRoll Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 Ive used Bubble UpNp with mixed results. It lets you access cloud data through the app, but doesnt fix up the metadata.

I haven't tried it with Google Drive or One Drive, but if that drive shows as a standard directory on your hard drive I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Music plays on my phone with the screen off and while I am in other apps. I imagine I will listen to more concerts now and it is nice to have my Youtube (original) music playlists that are videos available in the same app.
