Hello all, I am currently without a stereo system but I have an old teac rv-30 receiver amplifier from the 1980s. I was planning on spending $1500 on some speakers, either bookshelf or floor standing to get a system together. At the moment I would just be using a phone as the source.

I have auditioned a number of speakers but it has dawned on me that these are all being powered by modern multi thousand dollar amplifiers.

Not sure if anyone has any experience with this amplifier? Should I be looking at buying a modern entry level amp?

TEAC was at the budget end of component hi-fi if I remember correctly.

You could certainly do better, even purchasing secondhand.

But why not try it before you give up on it. With efficient speakers 30W can give plenty of volume in a domestic situation.

Be prepared for scratchy sounding controls and perhaps other problems though, it's getting old.

A service might be all it needs to keep going, cost vs outcome is an individual and case by case decision.

At the budget you should be able to get reasonable integrated amps and speakers like new Yamaha AS series amps, Rotel, NAD and similar. Have a look around for impressive gear and return with models for further comment here.

Unless you really want FM radio, receiver amps are generally less quality sound than integrated amps especially at the budget end.

Used gear budget will get you much better at around 2-3 times the value like Roksan, Musical Fidelity, Yamaha and other amps less than 5-10 years with less reliability issues than really old gear.

Thanks for the replys! will keep the amp for now and see how it goes. Possibly upgrade later, or if something comes up in the classifieds

A mate of mine picked up an old EAR M700 power amp for just $200 the other day. It's 350WPC into 8ohms though that's all I could find on it. The pedigree would suggest it will be a fantastic sounding amp though.  He'll be using with a 256 step resistor ladder preamp. If he finds it promising it will get  full recap.

Keep an eye out for quality power amps of days gone by.  Some of these go for a song.
