Hi all,

I’m looking at selling a Simaudio Moon Eclipse LE (Limited Edition) CD player with matching PSX external power supply.

Just curious what it would realistically be worth these days? Just want to price it correctly without under or over valuing it. It is an Australian delivered 230v version and I have the original box.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,

SS

Edit: Stock photo here, the one I have is boxed up but identical. Power supply is on shelf below.

I have no idea about the value but am interested to see what others more clued in than myself think.

Up until a week or so ago, I was looking for another cd player. If I'd seen something like this for sale, I probably would've made some stab-in-the-dark offer, being a sucker for top loaders (no tray mechanicals) and beefy external power supplies.

It's limited edition exclusivity (250 units?) should help find a buyer.

Do you know which optical drive and dac/s it is running?

Hi @deanB, sure, here is a photo of the spec page in the manual

Transport is a Philips CD-Pro 2, and D/A is performed by a quad of matched BB PCM1704U-K ?

It also has SPDIF in/out so can be used as a transport, DAC or CD player.

Philips CD Pro-2 and Burr Brown 1704U-K. Very, very nice.

Seperate transformers for digital and analog circuits, 120b dynamic range, very low output impedance. It's a beautifully designed thing.

Anyway, I'm sitting here listening to my new Audia Flight, best I banish the Sim from my mind and sign off.

Good luck with your info quest mate.

If it has this transport mechanism, it is obviously a top shelf CD player and should be in high demand and should be priced accordingly, have a look at web sites like audiogon to see if there are any recent sales.

Assuming it works perfectly The price will depends on factors such as it’s age, is the DAC still cutting edge ?, what you paid for it originally and how many people are out there that are looking for a high end CD player. as a ball park it’s worth probably 50% of what you paid for it, however this could easily range from 25% to 75% of what you paid. Then depending on desirability  it could be like a Oppo 205 where it is worth more than you paid for it.

Why not just initially advertise it for 50% to 75% of you purchase price and see if anyone either on this forum or maybe eBay shows interest in it, if no interest in it at that price, then reduce the price until it sells or if lower than you want to sell it for just keep it.

Just don’t trade it in as you would only get a very small fraction of its original cost.

I think the Oppo 205 is an outlier that will unlikely be repeated with any modern day product.

---

To OP's question, a brand new unused product may fetch 80% of its new price. A near new product may fetch 2/3 to 3/4. A used product, depending on age but in good condition can sell for 1/3 to 1/2 new price.

Agree, let the market decide...

Obviously, they just don't make 'em like this anymore.

The Sim is the equivalent of the Naim CDS3/XPS combos that were for sale on here a couple or few years back, same optical drive/dacs and overbuilt everything else. Took a while to sell but not because they were priced too high, it just takes time for the right buyer to enter the market.

Do not give it away if you don't have to.

This is an item that is hard to price, it’s like a classic car, just depends if there is someone out there that is dead keen to acquire a CD player of this quality and more importantly has the money to pay for it.

I have a Bel Canto CD2, which uses the Philips CDpro drive, there is a history of used sales that would say its price is between $1200 to $1800 depending on if the upgraded power supply is included, unfortunately your CD player would be at a higher level with no real sales history so hard to give an accurate price range, maybe put it out there as EOI and see what you get. Ultimately you know what you paid for it and what your bottom line would be to sell it.

Thanks all.

I’ll put up an EOI in the next week or two with asking price based on the above comments.

Cheers,

This Combo is a notch above the Units mentioned here ---the Aust RRP 2 years ago was --Gulp!:S

The standard Eclipse retailed for in Australia $12,000 and the Eclipse PSX retailed for $14,000. The Eclipse Limited Edition sold locally for $15,000!

I'd say with the items being in top condition plus with the Pro Drive and 4X's 1704's /etc-- $4k  starting would not be out of the question.

You may also want to point out its coaxial input, allowing the DAC to be used for streaming purposes for those who require that functionality.

Unfortunately the market for stand-alone CDPs, other than those in mint / new condition, falls away very quickly.

I wonder if that rule stands for exceptionally good ones.

If it helps, I bought a Supernova RS a few years ago for just over $3k.  Maybe something to compare it to if you want to look it up.  I think they went for around $8k in 2007.

And yes, as mentioned above, the SPIDF input on mine was one of the main reasons for buying it - I play digital music though it.

As mentioned a good few times on here ,  prices do seem to fall away hard sometimes.  You only need to check out the ads Eagleyes has for his Esoteric a while back ,  exceptional   world class piece that was 50K odd retail when released .

Did notice a few price adjustments and last take was 10k ,  not sure how it went at that price either.

G'day Loz, if it's the same unit that Boris gave Soundstage Aus for reviewing, then I agree. It was an offer I couldn't refuse.

It took a little while to settle in (6-8 cd's) and a bit of time for my brain to adjust, it's slightly more dynamic and detailed than I'm used to. Plus I'm running in new ATC's so the first 10hrs or so were pretty untamed anyway.

The AF lacks the creature comfort functions of the Naim- no random, program, repeat, delete track or hdcd.

But it provides fatigue free, detailed and flowing playback and as long as I get plenty of years of service from it, then Audia Flight will have done a great job of keeping my compact disc collection alive and spinning.

Hey Dean ,

Cheers mate for feedback .   Gonna have a rethink about the above Moon for sale , and keep eye out for Audia.  Picked up Audia Flight FLS 4 Amp tonight.  - CRACKER>

As I said earlier in the thread, I'd have been all over the Moon if the timing had been different and no doubt it will get a lot of attention when it's advertised.

Congrats on the AF amp Loz and good luck to @Sub Sonic, not that he'll need it.

When I sell stuff I always look for what is a World price and try to some 10-15% below it if I want to attract Australian buyers.

I have found the best source of prices to be HiFi Shark and for this player the link is:

https://www.hifishark.com/search?q=moon+eclipse#

I also always check the expired/past sales because it gives more real life prices rather than the original ones which are not always achieved.

Hope it helps

Overall, other than 4 x Burr-Brown PCM-1704K chips which are the last good DAC chips every made (and some say the best ever made), this unit also appears to have PMD-100 HDCD decoder which takes it to another level.

Plus a decent loader mechanism.

If only I could afford it, this would be certainly on my list.
