captain starlight Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 Hi all, I’m cleaning out my parents house and have dusted off the old General Electric Radio gram. It hasn’t been used for ages but surprisingly I fired it up and the AM radio works and still pulls in the ABC and local channel. No FM though. The BSR turntable still spins and even plays (it can also do 78s). Alas the tape wheels do not spin so cassette doesn’t work. Could be a simple fix though. it is a very nice piece of heavy wood furniture and there are 2 possibilities of what time do with it (in terms of music). Firstly, restore it completely and get it all working - or gut it,and put all new equipment inside and enjoy the very nice cabinet. The cabinet itself is in very nice condition (look at attached photos). Even has the original instructions and basic circuit diagram. I do wish I could keep it though as I would restore it but I don’t have the room and time for it. So I am thinking of selling it but don’t know how. One problem, it is located in Dubbo NSW and I don’t want to freight it anywhere (or even arrange freight as I have too much to do in clearing out the house, arranging funeral, finalising details etc). So to sell it, I just want someone to come and pick it up and unfortunately I think a possible customer base is too limited in the local area. So I am open to ideas and suggestions (or offers). Any ideas? thanks graham 2
captain starlight Posted July 19, 2020 Author Posted July 19, 2020 Following from my previous post, also have a large wooden cabinet styled colour TV (refer to photos). This tv matches the radiogram and is a HMV 26 inch. This was top off the line when colour tv first came appeared in Australia. I remember the excitement as we were the first family in the street to get colour and this was the actual set. again, it is big and heavy. I am too scared to turn this one on though so don’t know if it works. It is vhf only. Same as the radiogram, it is based in Dubbo NSW. so any idea, suggestions (or offers)of what to do with it? 1
Volunteer sir sanders zingmore Posted July 19, 2020 Volunteer Posted July 19, 2020 I don’t really have much useful input on what you should do with that stuff (that radiogram is beautiful by the way). I just wanted to say sorry to hear about your loss @captain starlight 2
Wood Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 That Radiogram is fantastic and EXACTLY what I've been looking for. If only Dubbo wasn't 5 hours drive from me
audiofeline Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 Sorry to hear of the loss of your parents. It's a difficult time, I hope all goes well for you and your family. The BSR record changer brings back memories, I had one on the first stereo I owned. I don't think they were great for records. However, the styli are easily available on eBay, and I would suggest getting a replacement as most stereos from this era have worn styli, and it only takes one playing to ruin a record. I recall those consoles being sold, the one your parents owned would have been considered to be top of the line - as a piece of furniture; the electronics would have been similar to lower-priced systems. It looks fantastic, and would be perfect for a retro pad. And the TV compliments it, and would work with an analogue signal (eg. from a VHS player). Being in such good condition they deserve to be somewhere where they will be valued and appreciated. 1
A.K. Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 Just for memory's shake, I would restore and keep the console. There is techs that would do such a job but it will be rather pricey as, it's time consuming. It's a pity it's the amplification is solid state, as if you decide to sell it, it would fetch substantially more if it was a valve design. There's a popular vintage market on Ebay for such things but what is against it, is the location and size of it. My condolences for your loss.. If you could somehow keep it, it will in the future keep reminding you of happy moments you've spent with your parents, while listening to it...
lemarquis Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 Sorry for your loss We had the exact the same TV and also the 1st in the street. In those days the only colour on TV was the tennis and a few ads. Hope you find a solution. If anything the stereo unit would make a great sideboard.
