Tweaky Posted April 2, 2024 Posted April 2, 2024 I've just binge watched 4 episodes of the new drama/comedy series Palm Royale, which has the 90 year old Carol Burnett in it [She has just layed on a bed for the whole 4 episodes so far, and the only words she has spoken were at the very end of episode 4, and it has been the funniest thing to happen so far ] Its not a bad series actually. 1
Godot Posted April 8, 2024 Posted April 8, 2024 Watched episode 1 of this today. Shows promise, I’ll watch more. Always worth watching Noomi Rapace, she does manage to get herself in some awkward situations.
Tweaky Posted May 8, 2024 Posted May 8, 2024 I just watched the first two episodes of the new ScFi drama series Dark Matter, starring Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi and Oakes Fegley. It's about a scientist that develops the means to visit other, of his probably destinies, and goes back before his discovery and kidnaps himself and swaps places. At the beginning of the second episode, there is a request that you view the shorts of future episodes that show after the credits. So far so good with this series, the script is good, so is the acting and direction, and despite many a ScFi series before it that has sort of tried to go down a similar sort of story line, Dark Matter has managed to keep the story both easy to follow, and believe it or not, plausible. I also watch the last episode of season one of Palm Royale, and what a episode it was, with plenty of revelations and at least half a dozen cliff hangers that are left to be resolved in season two. All together, I've quite enjoyed the series, the production values are very high with it, especially keeping true to the fashions and trends of the late 60's , early 70's, the set designs are amazing. Well worth watching if you want a light hearted comedy farce. 2

I was interested in this when I saw the preview, then it dawned on me that there were similarities with the show Counterpart, with the great J.K. Simmons as the lead actor, and I was not so sure about it. I don't mind Joel Edgerton in some roles, but wasn't sure if he could carry the lead in a TV series. I will still give this a try though as some point.

He doesn't have the screen presence or charisma to shoulder a show. He comes across as bland, uninteresting and, to be honest, a rather mid actor. J. K. Simmons made Counterpart an incredible show through his acting and made us believe and care about the concept - Joel Edgerton makes me want to switch to another channel or go to bed. The quote above is from the IMDb site and that reviewer and you, Troy, are saying the same thing. I think the reviewer on IMDb just doesn’t like Joel Edgerton much, but I think, the similarities with Counterpart aside, it would be fair to at least give it a try first, or more than just two episodes, to see if Edgerton can actually carry it off. I enjoyed Counterpart too and I thought J K Simmons was excellent in that series. Cheers, Keith Edited May 9, 2024 by cheekyboy 1

Wow, that review is nearly identical to my thoughts , although they must really dislike Joel I have quite liked some of his roles, but wasn't sure on his "lead "man qualities in this. I certainly will give it a try, and I hope to enjoy it, as the premise should make a good show. I don't think I've been disappointed in an Apple series yet...haven't watched everything though 1
Tweaky Posted June 28, 2024 Posted June 28, 2024 Good news, Dark Horses series 4 has been given the start date of 24th September. Strangely for me, since the Dark Matter series finish last Wednesday [It was pretty good if you haven't been watching it ], there currently isn't anything on APPLE that really interests me, although there are a few upcoming shows that do. 'The Instigators', starring Matt Damon and Casey Afflek starts 9th August. There is also listed as upcoming a remake of Terry Gilliams- Time Bandits, starring Lisa Cudrow, Takia Waititi and Jermaine Clements starting 24th July , which strangely doesn't have a trailer as yet, which I take can mean one of two things, first they are still editing it, or secondly the acting and script is so weak/bad that a decent trailer couldn't be compiled, so rather than turn people away before it starts, APPLE decided to not have a trailer. Given the previous sketchy output of the cast, much like Gilliam himself, I wouldn't be surprised if the latter was the case.....guess we shall see when its aired. Also the SciFi drama Constellation staring Noomi Rapace has been canned after one season, not a total surprise TBH

An excellent series and what a great character is Jackson Lamb. I also enjoyed Dark Matter and the door is open for a season 2 and beyond. I know not all shows that I like for instance are going to be for everyone else, but some that I thought were very good on Apple and in no particular order are, For All Mankind, Lessons In Chemistry, Silo, Sugar, Masters Of The Air and Ted Lasso. Perhaps there's something in that lot you've not seen and might enjoy Cheers, Keith Edited June 28, 2024 by cheekyboy

That was a travesty cancelling those shows. UTOPIA https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2384811/ Somebody tried to make a US version of this, but a dare not watch it in case I'm tempted to throw my remote at the TV, as apparently its a very poor in comparison to the original, which comes as no surprise when the American try to copy a UK TV series. In The Flesh. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2480514/ As for Dark Matter, the way it finish seemed pretty final to me [ judging by the logic of the premise of you create your own reality, and that a single person would not be able to follow the reality created by the 3 family members combined ], I somehow doubt there will be a another series, although I wouldn't mind if there was.

Yes, I thought you may have watched the programes I listed, but was just trying to be of assistance. I was intrigued with Sugar in the early episodes and I was not expecting the direction it took from about E5, which you'd have to watch to see what I mean. Ted Lasso was arguably one of the best series I've seen, espceially once the characters were established. That series ended with S3 and I believe it was finalised at the insistance of Jason Sudekis himself. I agree, there are so many good series that are cancelled inexplicably such as the examples above you have highlighted. I recently watched all 5 seasons of DCI Banks with Stephen Tompkinson and I couldn't understand why it was cancelled when it was still rating so highly. With Dark Matter, I thought the final scenes that showed the characters Ryan Holder, Blaire Caplan and Leighton Vance, hinted at future series involving their characters, but not necessarily involving the Deesens any further. Cheers, Keith

I suppose that might be a possibility, but they have a limited supply of the need drug to slip between realities. In retrospect, remembering two of the other scenes of the last episode, you had Ryan [ Jimmi Simpson] the inventor and maker of the drug waking up in a seemingly different reality, but still having invented the drug, [or a drug at least] and also Leighton Vance [ Dayo Okeniyi ] the funder of everything, appearing dressed like a future version of Bootsy Collins , whose travels into his different realities we have learnt nothing about....Is it actually the same Leighton ? So yes, I see your point, there IS a good chance of a series two. https://screenrant.com/dark-matter-season-2-updates/ We live in hope. 1
