What is it about holding down the power button for some time rather than a quick press that is a problem, just cusious.

I don't recall any negative outcome or problem created by holding the button down too long - it just didn't turn on or off if I did that.

Exactly, it doesn’t operate as the on/off button if you do that. 
Innuos Staff/Help persons say the extended hold is used to drain power from the box.
