Guest Willow Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 Just sipping on some of the Talisker, certainly has a stronger more lingering flavour than the HP. Ahh , but the HP has it all over the Talisker in the tactility stakes , pick up a bottle of HP and you just know it's a man's whisky , just holding it around the girth is enough to bring a smile to the hardest , bullets have been known to ricochet away from a full frontal attack. Don't overlook the carrier vessel CJ , tangibility is very important.

I am working on my list.
Guest Willow Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 1. Old St Andrews - What's up with that bottle ? , ( I think JW had some ridiculous bottle as well ). 2. Any of the " light and delicates " ( Glenfiddich , Glenlivet , etc ) , drink chardonnay instead. 3. Whiskey cocktails , think latte.

Super Mustud Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 Based on bottle shape only: 1. Johnny Swing 2. Jura (any one) 3. The Glenmorangies with the funny caps.
CraigC Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 I find the the HP more enjoyable than the caol 12 (i thought i'd opened the Talisker). But they are each enjoyable just different

Fantastic. I love it.
davidsss Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 I have tried it before, as well as one ice cube which is apparently sacriledge. Yeah ice is pretty much sacrilege but I've tried a splash of water and I've tried neat and I just like ice. Why? Well ice has the advantage of slowly opening up the flavours as it melts. When you first pour whisky over ice it cools the whisky too much and closes the flavour, however, as the ice melts the whisky is no longer too cold and the flavours slowly open up as the water mixes in. I generally find there is a point where all the flavour comes out and it's just right, clearly this is when the ice's cooling effect is no longer a problem and the right amount of water has melted into the whisky. Each to their own I reckon so I'll drink my whisky the way I want to. Off to Ireland soon so I'll see if I can taste some of their whiskey. Not sure if there are any distilleries where we are going (South) but we'll see. DS

CraigC Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 (edited) mmmm onto the Talisker. The last of the three small bottles i like this too rich like the HP but not as smoky as the Caol 12 On the tongue it reminds me of rinsing my mouth after brushing me teeth, then the aftertaste is strong smokey and rich. So my rankings IMHO of course HP 10 Talisker 10 Clynelish 14 Caol ila 12 Edited June 2, 2012 by LockedoutofCraigC
gypr1961 Posted June 3, 2012 Posted June 3, 2012 Picked up a bottle of anCnoc, never heard of it before but thought id take a punt on it, very smooth and light.

A mix of malts (not a blend) Talisker, Caol Ila and 2 others that I can't remember off hand. I noticed that it is a bargain at Dan's at $69 at present. Johnnie has stopped making it, and stocks will be gone in the next few months. Jim Murray gave it a 94 or thereabouts, certainly over 90, so well worth splashing out on.
Super Mustud Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 Just booked our 3 nights on Islay in August and also booked the ferry to get there and back. Phew, its a busy time of the year on the little patch! Anyway, hotel booked, Laphroig contacted to book a tour, and will contact a few other distilleries over the next few days. Drinking a Laphroaig Quarter Cask to celebrate. Its been a while since I had a peaty, and this little beauty is so much the better for a little time away. Mrs Mustud has been very understanding.
davidsss Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 I found the Laphroaig Quarter Cask a bit medicinal for my taste. Still, variety is a good thing. DS

DS David, the QC is one of the few whiskies I prefer with just a touch of water. Less than 10% makes a world of difference. Still full of flavour, yet more rounded. Truly, whisky can be a very personal journey. Edit: I meant to mention. The QC has to my taste a rather whacky personality. Add a teensy bit of water and it takes on a slight barbequey flavour that is not there straight out of the bottle. I pick it up every time. Think barbequed lamb chops. Never noticed it with any of the other peaties. Edited June 5, 2012 by Super Mustud

A trip like that is on my bucket list. Cheers, Ed
