Received some wonderful news today and decided to share the moment with someone else together with a lagavulin 12 yo limited release from 2011. This is the 11th bottling of the annual 12 yo limited release. I brought 2 bottles of this 57.5% beauty back from our trip to Islay this year, and had not tried it since sampling it at the distillery.

Its a cracker. Super intense smoke, far more so than the standard 16 yo bottling, and the extra alcohol has the bite you would expect, however it is still very much a Lagavulin. I don't think there is any of this stuff on sale in Australia, so I will just have to keep those two bottles for important moments - like when I want to drink some of it.

Ooh. My favourite thread from now on!!!!

Next try an Ardbeg. A little less peaty and smoother however still with huge character. Or Lagavulin. Or...or...ah, so fun...

Thought I would go back and start from the top. I bought my 3rd bottle of single malt today, an Ardberg. So far going down very well. Not quite the taste of burnt camels of the Laphroaig, but quite peaty all the same, and nicely smooth. Perfect for my poor sore throat :love

You cannot go wrong with that one. Excellent value for one of the classics.

I had eighteen bottles of whisky in the cellar, and my wife insisted I empty the contents of each bottle down the sink, or else. After careful consideration, I reluctantly agreed and finally proceeded with the unpleasant task.

I withdrew the cork from the first bottle and poured the contents down the sink with the exception of one glass, which I drank.

Then, I withdrew the cork from the second bottle and did likewise with it, with the exception of one glass, which I drank.

I then withdrew the cork from the third bottle and poured the whiskey down the sink, which I drank.

I pulled the cork from the fourth bottle down the sink and poured the bottle down the glass, which I drank.

I pulled the bottle from the cork of the next and drank one sink out of it, and threw the rest down the glass.

I pulled the sink out of the next glass and poured the cork down the bottle. Then, I corked the sink with the glass, bottled the drink and drank the pour.

When I had everything emptied, I steadied the house with one hand, counted the glasses, corks, bottles, and sinks with the other, which were twenty-nine, and as the houses came by I counted them again, and finally I had all the houses in one bottle, which I drank.

I'm not under the affluence of incohol as some tinkle peep I am. I'm not half as thunk as you might drink. I fool so feelish I don't know who is me, and the drunker I stand here, the longer I get.

I get it!

Sitting here in my new house, looking down the street, sipping the Ardberg, and chasing it with a Coopers Stout! Is this blasphemous? It sure tastes alright :)

Ardbeg and Coopers Stout? Fascinating.

I've come over all inspired.....

I also have taken the plunge on a so far unopened Sullivans Cove. I shall report back.

Glendronach 15 y.o. Revival vs Aberlour A'bunadh.

Both about $100 a bottle--the Aberlour is cask strength, so a bit cheaper if consumed at same %.

Both with a small splash of water to bring them down to about 35%. Both in same 'thistle' tasting glasses.

Both excellent.

Glendronach is slightly smokier, and slightly 'hotter' on the palate. A real classic scotch whisky taste.

The Aberlour is smoother and mellower with stronger and sweeter tastes, and a nose that is more reminiscent of the complexities of fine cognac.

I prefer the Aberlour.

Just come back from a film night at the Como Cinema hosted by Chez Regines. The film was "The Angel's Share" and the event included 3 whiskies. About 140 people attended.

Well worth going to. An entertaining film with some dodgy moments. The same can be said about the whisky!

This was my first taste of the new Isla, Kilchoman 6 year old. I'd been wondering what the new distillery would taste like. It was a blind tasting and i mistook its initial taste as one of the better Lagavulins, all iodine and cough mix. However Chez Regines' expert barman asked the crowd if anyone thought it was an Ardbeg. Many said yes.

Apparently many people have been trying to track down the Kilchoman. I have bad news. Its aftertaste is almost identical to sucking on a bicycle tube. A friend reckons it's a taste of burnt rubber but I think he exaggerates, the rubber is of the non-carbonised variety.

Even a 12 year old Caol Ila couldn't get rid of the taste. Two large lumps of soft cheese with spicy cracker biscuits has done the job, finally.

Why is a single malt so much better than a blend anyway? Surely there are nice blended whiskies too. I just received a Black Label JW yesterday as a gift you see, but can't remember ever trying it before.
