CraigC Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 At chez regine tonight. Really enjoyed more of the lime burners
Super Mustud Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 But is it any good? DS Yes, although I prefer one of my favourites. I've seen it at quite low prices for such a quality whisky, so if you like peaty then certainly worth investigating. I remember it picking up some very respectable award a couple of years ago.
Super Mustud Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 Very well. PM sent. Catty, your parcel has arrived. I set aside some time this afternoon to do a tasting. Perhaps my palate is playing up, however the Ardbeg, the Talisker and even the Peat Monster all seem to taste the same. Plus they sort of smell of cat's piss .I tried them all a few times and they really seem to have the same aftertaste. The Corio, however, was a standout. I drank half a bottle while smoking some Turf ciggies I got on the internet and felt like Sir Henry Bolte. Wore a beaten up fedora for the rest of the afternoon. Do you have any more of the Corio? You can keep any more Ardbeg etc you have left.
Phantom Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 I must make a confession here. I am not a whiskey expert by any means but I do enjoy a drop more so in the cooler months than in summer. However I was given a bottle for a gift from my boss last week and I have enjoyed a couple of shots since then. What say you experts about this one? Your opinions would be appreciated http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_732640/the-balvenie-single-barrel-15-year-old-scotch-whisky

mondie Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 Yes you certainly do have a good Boss Phantom, no wonder you are enjoying it.
Phantom Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 Yeah. He is a really nice guy and we work very well together. It's a mutual respect kind of thing and I always go the extra mile when it is needed throughout the year. He also has excellent taste in pretty much everything and won't buy sub standard things and so it has proven with the malt. That said, he never wastes money in any way. Only problem is I might become accustomed to it and be spoiled for anything cheaper
ThirdDrawerDown Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 You've done well with the Balvenie. Auchentoshan I've not had for a while so I fall back on Mr Banks who says it's triple-distilled, light and so depends very much on the barrel. Often light, fruity, luscious, but he also got a dud barrel with an oily taste. My recollection is the light and fruity - I must have got a good barrel.
mondie Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 This one was a gift from a supplier, enjoying a few easy glasses and enjoying some relaxation time. Quite enjoyable, an easy drink for anyone who likes whisky.
qwerter Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 Hi qwerts , don't get caught up in thinking you need to look to Islay for a peaty/smokey dram , Willow can recommend a trip to the Highlands region for this little number. The Ardmore Traditional Cask is a sensory jigsaw of all the key characteristics from all five of the scotch whisky regions put together , and at a reasonable price point. A nasal menage a trios consisting of rich rampant waves of peat & smoke , glorious glugs of caramel & meaty mounds of malt , the hints of vivacious vanilla , raucous raspberries and punchy peaches instantly try and take on and rival the aforementioned trio , but similar to two groups of bickering school children , they soon give in and both end up playing nicely with one another. Had a second taste of this fine product - great single malt. Don't drink it straight after opening the bottle, let it open up. The complexity will show itself...

Super Mustud Posted December 25, 2012 Posted December 25, 2012 Just winding down before hitting the rack before 3 fully wound up kids go crazy in the morning, with the assistance of: My cousin is coming down to our beach place for New Year's eve. He likes peaty so I have set aside five different bottles for us to try. I was reasonably good over Christmas. How is the stock in Scotland these days? Still plenty on the shelves?
mondie Posted December 25, 2012 Posted December 25, 2012 More stocked than ever Mustud, we must have 25+ bottles on the shelf now. Going to be opening a very special bottle soon with Xmas dinner, Edradour, bought when we were up in Tomintoul recently. To date my favourite is Old Pulteney, love that drop so keen to see if Edradour can give it a run.
Super Mustud Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 Am currently rereading Richard paterson's book, "Goodness Nose". An excellent book, and am enjoying even more than the first time around earlier this year. It motivated me to the point where I ordered a box of W&M 19 yo. I posted a link to one of Paterson's podcasts a few months ago. Not sure if anyone watched it, however I urge you to.
Super Mustud Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 What does he think of Corio? It burnt his moustache off.
Mr_Gimlet Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Discovered a surprising food/ whisky match the other day on the recommendation of a sommelier friend. It was an aged cheddar with an Ardbeg - though I suspect most single malt whiskies would work - and was quite a surprising match
matt200sr Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 just cracked and enjoyed my first quarter cask Laphroaig pretty stiff and smoky but enjoyed enough. anyone know how this differs from the other 10 year they do?

Jake Posted December 29, 2012 Author Posted December 29, 2012 just cracked and enjoyed my first quarter cask Laphroaigpretty stiff and smoky but enjoyed enough. anyone know how this differs from the other 10 year they do? Seems to be the q of the week! (see also post 516)
Super Mustud Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 Seems to be the q of the week! (see also post 516) Indeed so. I am fond of both. They are very different whiskies. For those who like cask strength then the Quarter Cask is a stand out. If not, then just wait a year or two...and try again.
Phantom Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 I am still enjoying my Balvenie very much and I am just considering what I might buy next. I am about 50% through the bottle and this has given me the idea to explore further. Is there anything out there that is similar in style that I should try? Thanks in advance guys. Cheers to all. P.
