Benje Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Ellil could you put some sound insulating material into a nice pair of winter-jackets for the dogs? You would have a mobile bass trap.
Guest Peter the Greek Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 LOL, no they contribute enough hair to the general living areas......its got to aid the situation .....PS their mum has purchased coats for them for their morning outings.....fair enough I guess it is cold at 5:00am
Guest Muon Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Damn! only pic that load for me are the Sub...love that woodgrain BTW, and the mobile traps... I want to see the two mains, but this darn connection is playing up. Well... they are a product of Andrews, so they must be very nice. I'll check out the pics again later. Ian.
Drizt Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Cool set up. The Mal-X drivers are beasts aren't they
Guest Peter the Greek Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 It is a beast of a sub.....weighs a tone! Andrew and I were panting pretty hard after lifting it up 1.5 flights of stairs This is an awful room for pretty much everything, the sub does a very good job considering and I've not EQ'ed it yet. I cant imagine the mains getting better either, but we'll see I guess. I still cant get my testing rig working....grrr
Grumpy Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Love your gear and room and the last shot of the Dogs is one of the best I've seen .Thanks for sharing.
Guest Muon Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Ooo...I like the look of the picture frame fronts
Drizt Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Ellil, Any pics of the final set up (painted, foam fill etc.) ?
Guest Peter the Greek Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 No, not yet. I've got the insulation in but its still a bit crude. I think, hey lets paint them, but that involves no using them...... Cant decide on black or white for around the drivers
Guest Peter the Greek Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 (edited) Well.....I've been working for 12+ years and never had a sick day......I came down with Pneumonia this week (I used to look at people on the train with surgical masks on as freaks.....I'm thinking about it now)......which basically meant I slept, watched a movie, went back to sleep for 5 days straight. Watched a bunch of old favourites, plus some newer stuff. Of note, we watched Dark Knight today. The bass in this film is awesome, basically every time Bale/Batman punches someone, plus the car chases, explosions etc etc. That sub is freakin awesome, its such a shame they aren't making the drivers any more. We had it reasonably loud and it didn't even break a sweat, so to speak. The largest sub I'd heard prior was a 15" velodyne and also the big Vaf thing I used to own. Neither of them come close to this thing. It cost about $3k including the box, driver, amps and spikes (they weren't cheap). But in saying that you could build a simple MDF box and paint it for less and buy a cheaper amp and get the same result. I reckon you could do it for say $2k all up. These things are bargains IMO. I will really struggle to buy an off the shelf sub again. No distortion and superb speed - Dark Knight really showed it off. Morale to the story - if you're going to spend ~$2k on a sub, know that DIY can deliver super results. I dont think I could find an off the shelf product for that money anywhere near as good. Edit: hats off again to Andrew for making such a superb box and finish. One interesting thing was, it was really loud today and the dogs slept straight through it - one of them with his head resting on the side of the box.....weird Edited August 21, 2011 by Peter the Greek
Paul Spencer Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 Elill, It's a curious thing when pets just sleep through everything. It's almost insulting! I have a little theory that if the dynamics are real enough, they will jump up. The real disappointment is that it gets lost in the studio before it ever has a chance to reach your room. The biggest reaction I've had was with pink noise! It is a shame about the bigger Exodus drivers. It's not so long ago that you had to spend $1k to get hold of a 15" Tumult and it was really mostly like a 15" Maestrom, except Exodus seem to have made them better. Your sub looks great for the price.
Guest Peter the Greek Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 It's almost insulting! I know! we got a much better, well worse, response to Casino Royal and more so Master and Commander. Our girl was quite distressed during the initial fight in the latter....that and Dr Harry....she doesn't like him either....
Drizt Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 My cats freak out with the bass during movies. The Mal-X's were ridiculously good for the money. To get better you need to spend double (almost triple) now to get the TC Sounds LMS-5400 Ultra drivers. I will never regret buying my two subs.
peacewise Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Elill, It's a curious thing when pets just sleep through everything. It's almost insulting! I have a little theory that if the dynamics are real enough, they will jump up. The real disappointment is that it gets lost in the studio before it ever has a chance to reach your room. The biggest reaction I've had was with pink noise! My youngest mutt, Vinnie, is often turning his head and ears towards the speakers with a quizzical look on his face. In one film that had dogs barking, he decided to have a good old bark at them too. As for the oldest, Buffy, well she's an audiophile and nearly always tries to take the centre sitting spot... perhaps I should reset the distances to where her ears are, rather than mine!
Paul Spencer Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 I think they've give it their seal of approval!
Guest Peter the Greek Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Dogs on TV or movies are bad news - our boy has launched at the TV once......fortunately I was in between and he wont be doing it again....I suppose its a good excuse for a new telly though
Guest Peter the Greek Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Small update.....made the grills today, they're not on quite right as I need to screw down the insulation, which at the moment is just sitting there......still no measurements chaps.....I'm so lazy when tech doesn't work first time Before Grills After Grills
Guest Peter the Greek Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Thanks guys. I am quite pleased with it. The way I have mounted the grills is appalling (Blue twine with draw pulls.....it works and you cant see it, I'll tidy up when I can) ......now I just need to get this cursed soundcard working so I can see how good these things really are......and also how bad this room is
Guest Muon Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Looks nice Elill, what's the issue with the sound card?
Guest Peter the Greek Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 ......cant get the input for the mic working, its a Tascam 144 MkII
Guest Peter the Greek Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 Just about got my new study fit-out/second system finished. A couple of Vaf Soundwall panels, an awesome little Aslan sub, with a redgum amp, and a Denon 1312 Receiver + xbox Got the PC and Xbox hooked up to the new 30" Dell Screen, its awesome, and I picked it up for about $1100 during a 3 day sale between Christmas and New Year Aslan Sub: Desk etc: Rack and shelves - finished with cornice etc tidied up:
