Guest 12ax7b Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 Interesting - they say it has a boron cantilever, but to me it is a hybrid boron/aluminium cantilever Should be interesting though. Look forward to sound impressions.

Look forward to sound impressions. My Jico SAS boron cantilever inserts into a tube that has the pivot and magnet parts. I think most MC cartridges have the cantilever connected into a sleeve to which the former/coils and suspension donut are attached. There are some MC's where the cantilever connects directly into a hole in the former. Edit: Another thought. Maybe the tube insert is longer on this MM cartridge because the boron cantilevers Ortofon has are a particular length. Maybe they had to use a longer receptacle tube (than say on a MC model) to maintain the same overhang as the standard Al cantilevered stylus modules? Linn Ekstatik ($12K!) is an example of an MC cartridge with sapphire cantilever inserted into tube (of some sort): Edited January 31, 2022 by Tobes
Tobes Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 Listening now with the LVB stylus. Sounds superb! Soundstage deeper and even more unhinged from the speakers. More realistic/natural timbre to voices and instruments which are also more defined and better separated. More composure in climaxes, which may be the result of better tracking, though I thought the stock 2M black was a very good tracker. Voice reproduction is excellent, improved smoothness, detail, timbre/texture and 'pop' in space over the already good stock stylus - maybe this has to do with tracking as well? I also find the overall sound very engaging. Some cartridges tick off objective boxes but just lack engagement. I actually found the Ortofon MC cartridges to be a bit that way, Audio Technica MC's maybe more so. No doubt personal preference and partnering equipment comes into this - and the system I'm listening to now has gone through some changes since those MCs were in the system. 2
Tobes Posted February 2, 2022 Posted February 2, 2022 Wow the LVB is a terrific sounding cartridge. Listening at the moment to Miles Davis - Someday my Prince will come - don't think I've ever heard it better. Instruments so wonderfully reproduced with clarity, fidelity and presence. So rhythmically 'in the pocket' too, like I said above this cartridge is no objective box ticker. Seems to me the LVB stylus is quieter in the groove too - not sure why (same stylus as the stock Black) maybe some property of the boron cantilever or the modified pivot damping(?). Too bad Ortofon jacked the price on this stylus, it should be heard more widely by 2M Bronze/Black owners. 2
