A friend of a friend rescued some of his Dads Hi Fi gear from long time storage, there was a Sansui 555a and this 1229 which had never been in a plinth and as far as the old man could remember was only played a hand full of times and then repacked in the original box and stowed in the wardrobe back in the early seventies.

Had the original plans 1:1 that I traced onto butchers paper and transferred onto some 18mm Euro Birch plywood and cut out with a jigsaw

I wanted a black deck but also wanted to see a bit of grain sneak through, a lot of black stains have a tendency to leave a blue hue on pale timbers for jet black I prefer proof tint

Simple design with classic American Black Walnut, few coats of 30% gloss acid cat lacquer

Great looking plinth Alan. Amin is an epic person and the story around this turntable was pretty special to start with. Now with the plinth in the picture the tale continues. I know it meant a lot to him and the family to get it up and running and it has got him sitting down in front of a pair of speakers so job well done.

Dad and I are amazed with the result Alan @Powerglide             , thank you!! It's a classy companion to the Sansui 555A and we love the single piece of American Black Walnut with the grain flowing all the way around, epic! Also thanks for your time on the investigation of the signal issues. As @cccrchairman said, I've finally pulled out Dad's modest vinyl collection from the 70's (ABBA, Beatles, Aretha Franklin) which would never have seen light of day otherwise. A new journey begins...

Lovely work on the plinth.  Always good to hear of an old turntable brought to life.  I hope it brings lots of listening pleasure.

Worth a mention

We blocked out the corners and fitted 38mm silicon hemispheres so the plinth floats 10mm off the mounting surface, the RCA's and power sneak out under the rear gap.

Hi and nice to meet you,

I have a Dual 1229 turntable that needs a new plinth base.  I saw your work and description of how you did the same project.  I need to do the same thing and really appreciate  the detail that you included in your article.  I am having a hard time reading the measurements on the original template that you posted and was wondering if there was a way that you could help me create a 1:1 template so I can do what you did?  Is the 1:1 template available anywhere that you know of?   Any help that you could provide would be appreciated.

Thanks for any help you can provide,

Hi Bart,

I gave the original template back to the owner, I may have the copied one stashed somewhere, I’ll take a look tomorrow.

Hi Alan, I have a brand new Dual 1229 still in its original packaging. It was my fathers and I have had it in storage for 33 years now. I would love to get a plinth for it I am handy with DIY and we’re very impressed with what you made. As with Bart I can decipher some of the measurements on the original template you posted but not all. Have you had any luck in finding either the template you made or is there any possibility of locating the original again? Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Warren

Sorry Warren, We shifted workshops since building this and I can’t locate the copied template made, I wouldn’t have thrown it so all is not lost.

Don’t think the owner is on here too much @AJuz but I think he is a friend of @cccrchairman maybe PM him

Hi,

I note you were trying to track down a template for a Dual 1229 plinth. Fortunately I came across the template for my own one still in the original box. Hopefully it will give you all the measurements required to make up a template yourself.
