Great album but I think Stevens mix for The Tipping Point makes better use of the Atmos.

Agree, these surround and Atmos mixes have made me a fan of Tears for Fears and I am going to a cinema to see their live concert and I can’t wait.

Another great Atmos track, the 3 hits from his first 3 albums have been mixed in Atmos and are great, a clear improvement over any lossless stereo version, after some researching I realised they were mixed by Mills Logan who is a very experienced Atmos mixer.

Oh wow. not a bad mix at all! I'm downmixing to 7.1 for most of my listening, but I've noticed a lot of the Atmos mixes on Apple Music are very light on the centre channel for vocal usage.  The way I've always preferred, and the way I'm familiar with from most of my DVD-Audio and SACDs, is to have the vocals centre-centric.  This track has them mostly L/R - I think it suits the track, but a lot of tracks it doesn't.  I generally mix vocals towards the centre, but that's just a me thing I suppose.

Really good use of the surround channel, but the vocals on the bridge are too jarring/out of place but it could be the downmix nixing the quality.  Otherwise, I'm actually pretty happy with this mix!

I've got this on preorder - just gave the Apple Music tracks a listen and I'm looking forward to the disc to arrive!

The Wham! is worth checking out (I have that on the way as well), and I stumbled upon some Whitney Houston mixed in Atmos as well.... sadly no physical release of that as far as I know.  Elton John's stuff's made it to Apple Music - there's a decent mix of Sacrifice there (which does use the centre channel for its intended purpose) and is a really good mix.

A few pop tracks I've been fond of recently on Apple Music is Childish Gambino's Human Sacrifice, and Khalid's Heatstroke.  And for some others, Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe, Imagine Dragons' Whatever It takes and Billie Eilish' bad guy (shame the Atmos mix of the new album didn't bring much to the table vs the stereo).  If you're into dance bangers, MK+Dom Dolla's Rhyme Dust gets the immersion done pretty well and has me wanting more EDM multichannel mixes.

Anyone listened to the Madonna Immaculate Collection Atmos mix? I found it a bit hit and miss, but when you go back to master tapes that are mixed and recorded differently, I can understand how there are immense challenges in getting a compilation to sound consistent.

Yes definitely agree....wouldnt sound right otherwise.

I suppose it depends.  I don't have an Atmos monitoring setup on hand, but I suspect it's due to the amount of information in the overhead surrounds that would thin out the vocals from a single point source, or the desire/need to produce vocals with a stereo image to recreate the same effects as the stereo mix.  Probably a good question for the likes of Steven Wilson.

I prefer to mix my 7.1 discrete tracks with vocals in the centre with a little L/R for presence and effects i.e. I'd put the raw vox in the centre, and the processing on the L/R.  That method falls to pieces if your lead vocal track is auto-tuned as it makes it much harder to hide in the mix, though!

I love how multichannel mixes deliver a new interpretation on the mix, and often, can include bits cut from the stereo mixes that give additional depth and experience.  Sometimes there's extra bits in the mix that gets cut from the stereo mix.  Groove Armada's Lovebox SACD 5.1 mixes are my favourite examples of this but sadly they never got the Atmos, or Apple Music multichannel treatment.

Not so much being cut, but more so lost in the depth of information being conveyed into only two channels.

Having multichannel allows greater seperation and a wider soundstage providing spaciousness - think of studio 8, 16, 24 & 48 multi-track masters being squashed into 2 channels as opposed to being allowed 7 or 11 channels to convey the different elements of the mix.

Sometimes 5.1 does the job very well - no need to go further.

Just listened to the Chicago atmos bluray and Carly Simon atmos bluray, both these titles have the Quad mix on them, I can't believe how aggressive the quad mixes are compared to the Atmos mixes, so BIG sounding in every speaker, is this what Quad was like back in the 70's? just full on assault in the 4 speakers, if so I can see why it didn't take off even though I love it I could see how it could be quite jarring to the non experienced  surround listener.

This is where Apple don’t make it easy, Dr Feelgood has been available on Atmos for a while but wasn’t the best, I was trying to find this 35th anniversary edition but couldn’t, realised you have to select a song from the popular area and then select “go to album “ and the full anniversary edition is there, I haven’t listened yet to see if there if a difference.

…I thought the overall mix was good but the bass lacking.  Less dynamic range than expected as well.

Yeah unfortunately the mixes are the same.

“Instead of proclaiming “the best songs from 2024” I have instead put together some of my favorites (so far) that I feel are worthy of a listen — ones that are available in Dolby Atmos and were released in 2024 (be it a new song or a re-release). Without further ado…”

Will be interesting, it’s one of the best 5.1 sacd’s so hopefully they add a bit more to

it.

“The old 5.1 mix of Avalon is widely regarded by connoisseurs as one of the best surround mixes of a pop-rock ever created and now its architect, Bob Clearmountain, has gone one step further with an incredibly immersive Dolby Atmos Mix”

INXS -The Swing would be an awesome one for Atmos even just for the song Burn for You with the beep,beep,beep-beep, bip, bip, beep.
