So what you are saying is that all the Spatial Audio on Apple Music is now great, and not upmixes/remixes, and all those have been removed? Should I give it another go?

No as I have posted previously and with other people’s YouTube videos there is still some rubbish on there but some absolute gems as well.
The rule of thumb is if it’s been released as a bluray surround version then it will be the exactly same mix.

just like stereo releases there have always been varied degrees of quality.

Yes, definitely give it another go.

Where does the quality of tidal atmos compare to apple music?

Keep in mind I'm down mixing to 5.1 but I recently switched from Tidal to Apple Music on my 4k ATV. I wasn't able to A/B at the same time but the only thing I noticed is that on Tidal there seemed to be more channel separation, the Apple Music audio seems to be more cohesive between channels.

There's some tracks on Yello's Point album that have the sound switching between the back channels to the front channels quite a lot, id say it sounds better on Apple because the sound direction is more seamless.

The other thing with Tidal was the volume of the music in Atmos was very quiet, on stereo it was the same as the rest of the system so was a bit strange.

Atmos in stereo.
I gather you can listen to atmos on headphones and get the full thing, is that right. It seems that you can listen to it in stereo , but of course it’s not the full experience is it? I like my stereo system ( tubes/full range drivers, records etc)
im wondering about the feasibility of both opinions in one system ?

I suppose maybe a preamp could offer that, but then I’d have to forego my nice valve pre, so maybe two separate pre’s both wired into the Tannoy hpds, with the corals at the back ( I have vintage upfiring cabinets too which could take the corals or something else.?

I have always wondered how this could ever be more than a pseudo multi channel experience, unless the headphones have lots of individual drivers in them.

With Airpods at least, they have head tracking. So as you turn your head from side to side, the location of the 'speakers' don't change. So you could tilt your head to the side and your ear facing the sky will be hearing things from up above. Turn your head to the right, and your ear facing the 'front' will hear the LCR, and your other ear will hear whats happening from behind you.

I still don't understand, if you keep you head still, how they then make something move around, overhead, behind etc. except by phase and loudness trickery, which is NOT real multichannel reproduction.

Just for the record I only discuss and recommend titles in Dolby Atmos listening with a 5.2.4 speaker set up so 4 overhead speakers in a very well treated room

I completely agree, Atmos in headphones is near pointless.

its worse fake atmos ...than the fake atmos they try and push with the sound bars with no surround or height speakers to speak off :D

I just changed my signature to now include the HT config. Perhaps you can do the same ?

Well, I picked up my copy this morning 😃.   It is an excellent release for people wondering why we like Atmos music. Easy to buy and relatively cheap compared with SDE releases and the US$300 box set. Or wait for the next JB sale ,(but I couldn't! 😁 )

Yep this is exactly why we love it, you just can’t believe anything could be better, even the most expensive 2 channel system in the world but then you have to wait 12 months for the next decent surround release which brings it all back to reality

Rather than discuss multi channel and stereo versions in this Atmos thread, I will start a separate new thread on your favourite way to listen to DSOTM.  Yes, it will be fun bringing in the vinyl crew into this debate.😉

DOSOTM is one that I can easily AB test and it’s very close, I would give the edge to the Apple Music version just for the convenience of no menus and just a couple of clicks on remote and it’s playing .

DVD\Bluray audio can be ripped to HDD as seperate tracks for local playing\streaming.

Yes I do do that but I use roon as my player for Flac multichannel, roon doesn’t do Atmos

Looks like the vast majority on my Favourite way to listen to DSOTM thread are vinyl ! So, will take this  slightly OT to answer your post.

Not sure whether you have access to the 4.0 version of DSOTM?  While both the Atmos and 4.0 versions are excellent, I prefer 4.0 a little more.  However, I will demo Atmos to friends...

Of course it would as the vast majority would only have vinyl.

Yes I have the quad and yes it is very enjoyable, the quad seems to do the money around the room better in money but the Atmos does clocks going off all around the room better in time so they are all excellent although a little different which is great

I’m about to sit down and listen to Cyndi Lauper She’s So Unusual in Atmos. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Her greatest hits DVD is where multi channel music started for me, all her hits on Dolby digital 5.1 so the search started looking on the back of music video dvds for for dts or DD 5.1 logos, not concerts as I wasn’t concerned with just crowd noise in the back.

You summarise it well. There is a difference but both are excellent.

For those hesitating to get DSOTM Atmos BD, please ignore the doubters on QQ who were wanting a crazy mix like Yello: Point; it would have been a disaster!  DSOTM Atmos is a worthy demo for this format...

I’m probably in the wrong thread as it isn’t “lossless” so I’ll post findings in the Apple Music streaming thread.

Nah bugger it, the title just says Atmos not how many bits and this just too good.

Although the first track wasn’t great sounded very muddy but then again I recall this not sounding great on the dvd either but then after that so far it’s great I’m currently up to on through the night and when that chorus kicks in all the surrounds open up, oh wow now witness with a reggae groove in the rears and bongos overhead, cool.

Even girls wanna have fun turned into a very enjoyable track.

Time after Time when straight into the Atmos best of playlist.

This is why I love Atmos it makes you listen to the deep cuts and you often find them more enjoyable such as this track, I’ll Kiss You.

We’ll just forget about He’s So Unusual.

Yeah,Yeah is crazy with all the weird backing vocals coming from all directions.

Ok that’s is, very cool.
