I'd go with a small pair of decent bookshelves on brackets, mid mounted so just infront of the listener and angled down to suit.

Your room is pretty similar to mine and it works well.

As another multi channel music person, highly recommend you put in setup where all speakers are ideally the same brand and series, or at a minimum, tonally matched.

Do I buy a pair of small Quad S1 bookshelfs and use them as my x.x.2 overheads? ( then a fully matched system)

That is one way.  But contact Quad to see whether they have tonally matched ceiling speakers, which can make for a neater setup.

I too would sing out as far as possible to stick with same brand …and if possible go the 4 in ceiling heights overhead and just forward and back of listening position is best in my experience …for location of heights for 3D audio atmos included…

If can’t do that now the compromises solutions …most systems have them some compromise or other … ok can’t do in ceiling for what ever reason … get a pair of front heights ie sit on front wall above current mains. Paired with rear heights on rear wall above rears.

Note both pairs are best as they will create a phantom height above you . Otherwise with just one pair front or back there will be some compromise with sound still appear to come from front or back and higher and no matching pair front or back to create the phantom image above you

other compromise solution, let's say decide to go the in ceiling speakers which is highly recommended but can’t  do 4, can do 2 heights just forward of you. If can’t get matching speakers to the rest as quad don’t do in ceiling then get something like krix ceiling thats quite neutral in sound and found have blended in well with other brand speaker sets. There are quite a few forum members doing just this !

whatever the approach. Do it. 3D audio is probably the most significant things in surround sound from the development of the lossless formats. Well worth doing … literally takes to new heights !

First one.

MC Hammer You can’t touch this.

They say streaming Atmos lacks low end because of the lossy nature which is true in some cases but this proves it wrong which makes me wonder is it just all in the mixing.

How ironic that this was next, I thought I had it on repeat 😂

a bit less bass but more hifi sounding.

I believe this is a rare case where this sound better than the bluray, although it’s only from memory.

Thanks @GaryT, @Snoopy8 and @betty boop for the replies.

The 4 speakers in the very front and back to create phantom height is a new one to me, not a bad idea.

But your replies have just confirmed to me that buying a pair of S1 bookshelves to match the rest and Installed on the ceiling just in front is the simplest/best way to go.

Cant wait to get it going, was listening to Apple Atmos in  5.1 before the system got packed away and it was great to be able to stream multi-ch music. Hopefully before Xmas

I have the moving pictures and signals bluray releases but I haven't listened yet.

Looking forward to comparing them to the old 5.1 dvd-a releases.

Confirmed and in Atmos. It could yet match Yello : Point

Just listened to the Boris Blank track on Apple Music Atmos and while it's a tad more subdued than the Yellow Point album it's still way above and beyond most Atmos tracks.

With music like this I don't think there is much or any difference between streaming and physical disk as all you are listening for is the pin point accuracy of the surround sounds and not so much the dynamics or punch from a pop/rock track.
