stevoz Posted October 23, 2021 Posted October 23, 2021 Hi Ant.....I just discovered this thread, had no idea it existed. You have been a busy boy. Some of your gear is looking fantastic.....hope the sound is just as good. My obsession for a time was cartridges......looks like yours is speakers. Keep up the good work and having fun with it. 1
BuzzzFuzzz Posted October 23, 2021 Author Posted October 23, 2021 (edited) Thanks @stevoz Yeah man, all coming together nicely, just a few repairs happening now, with all the racks done and waiting for them to return. Very happy with the sound from most combinations, there has been a few wrong matches of equipment. Having so many options is very satisfying. I don't swap in and out because I don't like something, it's finding out what other gear can do. I'm hotly anticipating the return of the Sansui AU-517, and my Optonica amps. I'm also picking up a small Rel sub very soon. While I'm not high end, I manage pretty good sound overall. I don't get the detail and presence of the high end systems I've heard with other members, but I'm not aiming to. I know my financial limits, and that level of quality is beyond me. A couple of speaker modifications to finish, then I can settle down and begin measuring & tweaking. I've sourced some Peerless tweeters from another member here, should be here in a month or so, to finish the Celef restoration. Then another Celef touch up for another member. It has been a life changing experience since joining SNA, most of my spare time is devoted to stereo. I enjoy listening while working on speakers, racks, platforms etc. Sometimes in the past, I found it tricky to devote the time for focussed listening, with so much to do. This makes even better use of listening time, although rarely from the sweet spot. Cheers mate. Edited October 23, 2021 by BuzzzFuzzz 5

Uncle Seth Posted October 25, 2021 Posted October 25, 2021 (edited) @BuzzzFuzzz it started with a cheap sub for me too. Not sure that I'd recommend it to anyone as a start point, but there ya go. A sub opens your dynamic range. Try to crossover about 20Hz above your mains 6dB down frequency. Oh, and check the REL sub recommendation for your room. There is calculator on the REL site. Not high end? Probably close enough to it for your current appreciation level. Probably more sophisticated than mine. Carry on, champion. Sony CDP-227ESD This unit is quite well regarded, and benefits from some upgrade modifications. It too has developed a static like sound during playback, and will be on it's way for repairs in Melbourne very soon... hopefully upgraded at the same time, but, I'll have to wait and see on that one. G'day Folks. It seems to be a little challenging to pinpoint and solve the issue with this deck. It's in Melbourne being looked at, as it emits a digital hash like sound during playback. It's been serviced, but the problem is eluding us. Can hear what sounds like digital hash on the outputs (and headphone) so ive tried tweaking some pots to see if I can get it to come good (in case it was tracking error) along with cleaning the laser assembly and the problem remained so ive taken out the main board and tested the caps. All appear to be good except one which ive replaced and the issue still remains so im running out of ideas on what to do. Does anyone have any experience they could share here, please? Jehuty Posted November 5, 2021 Posted November 5, 2021 (edited) Hi Ant, Didn't know you're trying to fix a CD player, I know a tech whiz (or two) here in Sydney whose work is just fantastic and reliable. I've lost count of Marantz CD94 he has fixed (and upgraded) as well as other spinners (CEC TL1, etc). I think he knows Sony ES too. Give me a buzz and I'll let you know his contact number, if you're keen. Cheers, Will Edited November 5, 2021 by Jehuty 1
BuzzzFuzzz Posted November 15, 2021 Author Posted November 15, 2021 (edited) Howdy Folks. A few changes here, with a different line up after picking up a Rel T5 sub from @TheBlackDisc, thanks mate, always great to catch up. A lovely addition to the household, paired with some TDL RTL3's as fronts, then supported by Mission 782's as rears, an Axis centre, and running off a Yamaha RX-V861. I'm listening to lossless files through the trusty Philips media player, optical out. The Yamaha came from another member a few months ago, waiting in the wings while I enjoyed the Denon AVC-A1 in Direct mode. The Yamaha has HDMI inputs, the Denon doesn't. I bought it to have my first experience with surround sound. I've been putting it off for a while, until... I'm ashamed and embarrassed to admit, I blew up yet another amp, the Denon, by rushing to wire up the crossovers before work, coming home, forgetting to check, and after 15 minutes playing I cranked the volume... flash / bang / puff. I'd wired one section incorrectly. I wish I could offer some words of caution, or better yet wisdom, but it seems I don't learn some things. Double check everything and don't rush. The Denon is being repaired by a local tech, way out west, and should be home very soon. While the Yamaha doesn't match the Denon, it was obvious straight away, it's merely different. I prefer the Denon as it seems to have a bit more weight behind the music. I always try to give any changes a good, few days of ear adjustment, and I'm enjoying the current set up. The Rel T5 has an 8", downward firing driver. I'm normally running a 10" Energy, front firing sub, and the first impression was the bass is not as big. It's more refined and in control with faster attack, but not as 'big' in the room. That's not a negative. I like to have those characteristics in the bottom end, and I rarely play loud anymore. Hey @Uncle Seth Thanks mate. I have a Mini DSP 2x4 and Umik1 to play around with soon, for speaker measurement. I still haven't done any active room correction, I'm a bit of a slow learner. I'm getting there with the speaker modifications, attempting to get the cabinets finished before measuring. I know that once measured, tweaked and sounding good, it will be very, very difficult to pull them apart for finishing. When my amps and other bits return from repairs in Melbourne & Sydney, I'll put the Yammy on the bottom shelf and close off the back of the rack with some thin, painted ply. The Denon will go back in it's spot for Direct Stereo. I can't use the sub in Pure Direct mode on the Yamaha, I can with the Denon. I listen to music through 2 Chanel Stereo on the Yammy. The RTL3's are set on small. Quality recorded Vocals and Acoustics are sounding very nice. While they have enough weight behind them, this set up of small drivers doesn't really pack enough punch for Heavy music, although Electronics sound decent. Billy Eilish doesn't shake the house like the Energy sub, but there's more definition. The TV and video has worked out well, using the Mission 782's set small and low, very close to my listening position, loud enough that the sound still comes mainly from the front. BuzzzFuzzz Posted December 13, 2021 Author Posted December 13, 2021 (edited) Howdy Folks. Still running the Yamaha, TDL, REL combo, with the addition of a Raspberry Pi connected via HDMI for now. I have quite a few HiRez files I've been unable to play previously. I was converting them through Any Audio Converter, to play on the Philips Media Player. It doesn't get much better... working on speakers while listening to early ZZ Top albums... Currently listening to ZZ Top's La Futura for the first time... yeah, fine form and great sound. BuzzzFuzzz Posted June 23, 2022 Author Posted June 23, 2022 G'day Folks. I've been quiet on the forum of late, always checking but not posting much. I was just reading through the My System Today thread, and Man! There's some nice rigs set up all over the country, which is pretty cool. My gear is not quite on the same level, and instead of posting there I thought I should update the 'ol Way out West thread. Not that I'm embarrassed, but I have a different approuch... DIY. Where speakers are concerned, many here will know I have a bit of a hoarding problem. Many people have suggested they may be breeding, and with the exception of some Jamo Power 366's I picked up from the SNA classifieds, waiting at my brother's place, and have to squeeze in somewhere, I'm not intending on buying any more. I do intend to design and build a nice pair of 3 way floorstanders, and maybe a matching sub. All my efforts of late have been modifying and restoring old cabinets. I recently built four, small cabinets with a single driver in each, but they are on hold waiting for paint to arrive. Instead, I've been stripping old Marantz, Sony and unknown brand speakers, and one pair of 'white van' specials. I sure got well and truly suckered there. These speakers would have sat around unused for years, or been chucked out. I've rounded edges, braced internally, sanded the old vinyl veneer to get most of the scratches out, but not too far as I wanted to keep the look. Most of the edges were banged up, so I rounded the edges with a router, and wasn't sure how to finish them. I sanded them, gave each round some very fine filler, sanded back again and still wasn't sure how to finish the edges, or the veneer. I had some Wattyl Rosewood stain left over from doing a mate's Celefs, and tested on the bottom of one of the cabinets... you beaut! Came up very nice. Not only that, but some got on the rounded egde, which is smooth but still sanded back chip board, and that looked pretty good too. So, I finished them all with the same treatment, and they're all different because the vinyl veneer was different. They still looked a bit flat and I thought of a clear coat, but being a tightass, I had some left over Japan black stain & varnish I used on my Celefs, which came out very glossy. I hit them all with that and they came up better than I thought they would. You can see the imperfections in the the old cabinets, but now they have a beautiful glossy shell, it reminds me of toffee apples. I've used new and second hand Dayton, Sony, Infinity, Jaycar, Peerless, Vifa and Peerless drivers and tweeters. At this point I've done everything by ear. I have the gear for measuring, but having a little trouble finding the confidence to begin. I've been putting it off for a long time. I am waiting to buy a DATS, which will be a while due to economics, and while not crucial to start, I have used a few drivers that I have no spec's for. I'm very happy with the sound of all at this starting point, the only way is up from here. I only have a few new crossover parts and they get swapped around with all the salvaged parts that still measure well. I need to spend quite a few dollars there, and that will have to wait too. But, the time is not an issue, I'm waiting on six amp repairs at the moment, and I know good things take time. This is a life journey for me. I got back into stereo five years ago, and joined here not long after. Now most of my time is devoted to it. My 3 way build will be my final speakers, but I'll probably move more into restoration of some more fancy, old speakers. Here's a sample of the finished cabinets, although I'm not happy with the grey and that'll get another sand and coat, or two. Sorry, they looked brighter on the phone. Grey - Jaycar 12" & 4", Plessey tweeter. Black - 15" kevlar reconed Infinty(?) Not 100% confident there, but that's whay I paid for. Both pair are sealed and weigh a tonne. Running off the Rotel RA-971 MkII A & B speaker outs. One of three near field systems in the room, waiting for the arrival of a lovingly restored Sansui AU-517. Cheers for now, but here's a few more pics. Listening to Floyd's Dark Side SACD on a Pioneer PD-M40 CD player kindy gifted by yet another generous member a while back. Thank you all. 16 1
Jventer Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 @BuzzzFuzzz I agree, life is a journey, not a destination. Looks klike you are enjoying the "ride". Great to share the journey, thanks for posting! 1

I'm not sure if they do anything and its way too tricky to do a quick before and after test. My intention was to help break up higher frequency reflections, as I know they don't absorb, or affect lower frequencies. Living by myself allows me to set up anything, and my budget approach led me to use egg trays. They actually have an expiry date, and were sourced, unused, from an egg farm for free. I've considered painting, but 100 of them require a lot of spray paint, when taking all the angles into account. I actually like the look and feel of them in the room. Cheers mate. Ant. BuzzzFuzzz Posted July 4, 2022 Author Posted July 4, 2022 Howdy Folks. Not long until I have some repaired amps returning, for now I'm running the Rotel RA-971 MkII for stereo, and the Yamaha RX-V861 for AV. I'm very enthusiastic about a Sansui 517 being repaired and updated by one of SNA's finest Sansui lovers. That will be my No.1 stereo amp, for vinyl and CD, and the basis of my main, 3 way speaker build. I'm also waiting for my 2 Optonica amps, one for my Optonica TT in the third living room system, the other is for a second Optonica system in the dining room. The Denon AV-A1 should be ready in the next few weeks and returning to main AV duties. The next pair of speakers are now finished and set up in the AV system. The cabinets were from a pair of 'white van' specials. The drivers discarded and replaced with a HiVi 8" side firing woofer, a Peerless 6.5" mid, and a Vifa ring radiator. The cabinets are dual enclosure, both sealed, fully braced with a new platforms added, and new baffles. I've been listening for a few days now, and the crossovers have changed after fine tuning by ear. Very happy with the unmeasured results and will listen for a few more days. Im using the Rel T5 sub from about 100Hz down. ... here's a sneak peek at the next pair... 5
2Brix Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 Oooo that sneak peek looks interesting, now following this thread ...tell more, tell more
BuzzzFuzzz Posted August 14, 2022 Author Posted August 14, 2022 (edited) G'day Folks. After a few combinations I've settled on this set up for a while. 15" Kevlar re-coned Infinity drivers in reconditioned Marantz LS-20, sealed cabinets. Running off a Dayton SPA-250 sub amp, fed from a Rotel RA-971 MkII pre out, with the drivers in series, which does only give me mono bass. Set about 100Hz at the moment, but I have been upping that to about 120Hz. The Rotel is driving Acoustic Research AR TSW-210 bookshelf speakers which now have replacement Peerless woofers. I'm using a Pioneer PD-M40 CD player. Edited August 14, 2022 by BuzzzFuzzz 3
