jbprophoto Posted August 28, 2023 Posted August 28, 2023 Rightio - So I finally ran some thorough A/B split tests over the weekend over quite a few different types of music / tracks. Exactly the same song, Exactly the same version, Exactly the same file resolution. Only change was one was via Apple Music streaming and the other was via Qobuz streaming - ie one was in ALAC and one was in FLAC. No other changes in the test. Qobuz / FLAC was slightly better than Apple Music / ALAC but you had to be paying serious attention to detail. Sounded like a slightly larger dynamic range on Qobuz which gave it slightly more realism - especially within vocals - which makes it slightly more emotional. Just seemed a little sharper, livelier and crisper and a little more detail to listen to. The difference wasn't immense. But even my girl could hear the slight difference during the sit down A/B split test and hers was a blind randomised test with me giving her A or B listening brackets etc so she didn't have the placebo effect - and her critical listening skills are obviously not as good as some people who spend a lot of time doing so and she certainly heard a difference, even if minimal - and picked each format correctly every single time. My hi-fi value is in the $15,000+ range with $6,000 floorstanding speakers and Topping D90SE dac and there was a smallish difference in sound quality. I'd suggest someone with a much lower value hifi set-up may well not hear the difference. But it is there - if you care that much. A similar example of SQ gains might be for example going from a midrange RCA interconnect to a higher end RCA interconnect. Gains are smallish in the scheme of things but if it only costs you $3 AUS per month to do so it seems like a no brainer if SQ is important to you and you have a decent hifi set-up. Just have to offset the other factors like whether Qobuz has your types of music within their catalogue vs Apple Music catalogue and also the ease of use of the interface which I find Apple Music considerably better than Qobuz app interface on the phone app. Interesting test. Apple Music High Res Lossless Streaming = $13 AUS per month Qubuz High Res Lossless Streaming = $16 AUS per month if paid yearly upfront Other peoples opinions / own tests same as above ?? 2

Please describe your setup for Apple Music - 1. Mac USB output to DAC? 2. iPad output to DAC? 3. AirPlay to streamer? If you use setup 1, did you take care of changing the Mac audio output sample rate to match the track sample rate? Last time I checked Apple Music did not offer an auto sample rate change on Mac, but iOS does - so setup 2 is the ideal choice for Apple Music. Edited August 28, 2023 by wklie 1

Thackeraye Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 Has anyone used the Qobuz app that's on Samsung TV's and fixed the problem where it stops playing anything if you try and switch the quality up to CD quality from 320 MP3? I've tried deleting it and trying again from scratch and I'm not getting anywhere.

If you are using the sound from the TV, that would be your problem, as I doubt it would be capable of 44.1 khz CD quality. You would need to be using a receiver with an inbuilt DAC or powered speakers with inbuilt DAC. That's my guess.

But as @wolster mentioned, sound quality likely to be woeful, but ok as background.
Thackeraye Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 I'm running Connect TV box>SPDIF>Wiim Pro>Amp, so I'm luckily avoiding using the TV speakers! It's more an issue with the app - it defaults to 320, and if you start using that it works fine. If I switch to CD 44.1 it just hangs up, with the Q logo circling, and switching back to 320 has the same spin and no play. Qobuz works perfectly through the Wiim, but I was wondering if there was a way I could big-screen the interphase on the TV. No big deal if it doesn't work.
wolster Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 Now above my knowledge. Someone else here might have an idea. If not, maybe try the Qobuz community (Qobuz club) for a solution. 1

It is clunky to use and buggy. Just cast using Qobuz phone app to TV and problem solved. When you play music on the Qobuz phone app, you should see a "radio signal" icon on top. Click on that and select the TV as the output.

Not the same thing, but listening to Qobuz v AM on Airpods pro from iphone, Qobuz is nght and day better. Which is disappointing, because I already subscribe to AM as part of the Apple One Premier subscription….
Dr.Funk Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 Hi Guys, Can anyone tell me what is going on with my Qobuz app when talking to my Lumin A1? I have checked my software, both on the Qobuz app and the Lumin. I am using an iPad Air 2 with OS 15.8. The Lumin Firmware is 17.0b. When I open the Qobuz app and go to my favourites a weird thing is going on. If I search on Artist I get 2 (there are 210 as seen in my desktop PC), if I search on Tracks there 720 and when I search on Albums, there are 200. I always prefer to search on Artist, but this will not show more than 2. I have only been using an iPad for a short while, I went back to my Samsung Tablet to check the Favourites layout and it's the same, only 2 Artists showing. This leads me to think it is a setting in the Qobuz app, but when I go into the Qobuz settings within the Lumin app, there are only the options to disable or log out. So could it be that something has gone out of wack with the way the Qobuz app is talking to the Lumin App, but with only disable or log out, what can be done? Appreciate any help.

Do you have another device (Phone for example) that you can run the Qobuz app and see if the behaviour is mimicked? If you're using Qobuz's own app, this would be independent of the Lumin so cant see how they would interfere. If running Qobuz inside Lumin - that's a different matter altogether. I would also just delete and re-install Qobuz if the above isn't possible - a simple 2 minute process.
fjs Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 I recall having a similar problem. What it was is when I first subscribed to qobuz and set it up it asks the question what artists you want to tag or something like that so that down the track if you want to sort artists only those artists that you first nominated show up. Ive had quobuz for a couple of years now and if I hit the artist search button nothing shows up even though I have a few hundred albums in my favourites so my conclusion is that artist is not a search option.
fjs Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 Just further to my last reply, I went into my qobuz app and it shows favourites ie albums you have selected or playlists. It also shows your favourite tracks but you have to have selected a track as a favourite. Your favourite tracks are not necessarily in any of your favourite albums or playlists. The same applies to artists, you have to select favourite artist then it will show up in any search of artist ie your favourite artist, as with tracks, had no correlation to favourite albums or playlists. 1
Dr.Funk Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 Hi Guys, So to clarify, I have tried two setups, my iPad and my Samsung tablet, as mentioned, I am getting the same results on both. Yes I am accessing Qobuz from within the Lumin app. @fjs, Frank where are you making these changes, when accessing Qobuz from within the Lumin app, I get no options? @Hydrology, Mark, When you say run the Qobuz app outside the Lumin app do you mean to treat them as two separate entities? So, install Qobuz on the iPad and then have it send its info to the Lumin. I suppose I then tell the Lumin to select the Qobuz as a library, like I do with selecting jRiver library, being my own hard drive? Thank you both for your replies.
fjs Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 Hi, I don’t have a lumin so no idea how their app works but I would be reasonably certain that it is similar to bluesound node or Wiim streamer. In both the BluOS and Wiim app when one selects qobuz it opens and shows favourites, purchases, recommendations etc. It’s favourites that I always open because that is where all the albums etc that I have selected as favourites. If I then open favourites it shows album, playlists, tracks, artists but it only shows what you have tagged as a favourite. My normal procedure is that every Friday I open qobuz from the qobuz app on my iPad. If there is an album that I want to listen to I tag the heart and it will then show up in my streamers app under favourites. There would be somewhere in the quobuz app that you can also tag with a heart an artist although I’ve never done this. If I am then playing a favourite album accessed through the streamers app if there is a song that I like I can, selecting the three dots, choose add to favourites and then it will show up in the streamers app as a track favourite. Again there may also be a way at that point to select an artist as a favourite but never needed to do that. So again, only items you have selected as favourites ie tag the heart, will show up in any search. 1
fjs Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 Just to clarify, to tag with a heart an artist, go into the qobuz app on you iPad or whatever, search an artist and on the artist page mark as a favourite then that artist will show up in your favourites. Sounds cumbersome buts I think that is the only way.
Dr.Funk Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 That's where something is wrong on my end. I have all the 210 albums tagged as my favourites, on my PC I have the three dots, all the time, in every view, but on the app within Lumin I am not getting the three dot selector, anywhere, weird!

After I've complete my checking you can change your password. If you were using Qobuz Windows app, please also try using a web browser to check your Qobuz account. Note that Lumin app is not able to restrict search to within favorites. If you do a search in Lumin app Qobuz tab, it's done for the whole Qobuz catalogue. Lumin app and Qobuz app do not talk to each other. If you use the same Qobuz account in both apps, both should show the same favorites you have marked manually. There is no "three dot" for Qobuz item in Lumin app. Please tap and hold something. They are different apps, with entirely different UI, and used in entirely different ways. Edited December 16, 2023 by wklie
fjs Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 The key point is that no matter what streamer you use it all searches in accordance with quobuz and only items you have marked as a favourite show up as a favourite. Just because you mark an album as a favourite it does not automatically tag the artist of that album as a favourite, that is a separate selection by you. It kind of makes sense often I like an album but not particularly keen on the artist. In your search of favourites on your lumin you can organise it in ascending order of artists or albums or, as I do, in ascending of of date of selection.
Dr.Funk Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 @wklie Thanks for the reply Peter. "If your question is why you are only seeing 2 favorite artists in Lumin app for your Qobuz account, but you see 210 favorite artists in your desktop PC windows app (?) for Qobuz" No, I am seeing the correct number of favourite Albums and Tracks in my Lumin app as I see in my desktop PC Windows 10 app. But I see 210 favourite Artists on the desktop PC but only 2 in the Lumin app. I can appreciate how difficult it must be to make any component 'talk' to everything, if not impossible. Up until now I have listen to my own library through the Lumin A1 into my main system. I usually listen to 'new' music via Qobuz installed on my desktop PC, marking albums as favourites until I have had the opportunity to listen to them and make a decision. Yesterday I had friends around and I tried to play my favourites through the Lumin and it would only offer 2 Artists. I shall try your suggestions over the weekend and see what I can find. A friend has told me that he uses the Bubbleupnp app to access Qobuz content on his Lumin and the Lumin app for his personal library on a hard drive. Would that be a suitable workaround? Regards Andy
