On the subject of full range would anyone recognise these British 6” drivers? The rubber surround looks pretty rob69707E97-EDA8-4226-ADA8-337C31327031.thumb.jpeg.b4aa61e6e5fe91b9b7c9b2631fe05730.jpegCB0DD53C-CCA6-4AFC-A8B9-11BA0B19B1BF.thumb.jpeg.4413bd7f08be93db1a73a1b2d8f96566.jpeg94BE7252-6C9C-4257-9572-3B4AC882219B.thumb.jpeg.bac19c864218626cb2fcf4de24b6341c.jpegust

The new Lii Song Platinum-10 are meant to significantly better the Silver-10..... Receive mine next week. Yes I know, frequency response wouldn't look as flat if the graph was 0 to 120db rather than -120 to 120.

No proper reviews of these drivers yet. This is the closest thing (click here) apart from my conversations with Leon at Lii Song. From discussions a different paper pulp formula was used in creation of the cone, different suspension, the support for the driver needed to be upgraded vs the Silver-10 and a much larger neodymium magnet and probably a few other changes I've forgotten Despite looking similar to the Silver-10 this is effectively a completely different driver. Basically this is their cost is no object driver. The best that they can produce on their budget. It has to be remembered that they're a family run business of about 5 people in China before you factor in distribution networks in other countries, so this driver is a pretty big deal for them and a very noticeable step up over even their previous top of the line Silver-10. There are only two models in the Platinum series. Basically a 10" and I believe a 15" version will be available at some point also. My understanding is with a big enough cabinet these will achieve excellent bass for single driver, and this is one of the few drivers which simply does not need a super tweeter added so looking forward to mine.

I like what many full-range or wide-band drivers do. I've enjoyed a few sets of ESLs over the years and currently use 3" dynamic drivers in my car audio system mobile audiophile listening room.

As much as I love the Audible Physics NZ3 drivers I currently have there doing 350Hz to 20kHz nearfield duties, I'm tempted to try something else, even if it confirms how good the AP NZ3 drivers are.

At $69ea, the Markaudio Alpair 5.3 seems interesting and if they prove less than desirable in my application, it's not much lost. If they prove to be preferred, the AP NZ3 at $699 a pair may forever make me second guess high priced drivers.

I'm curious enough to give this a try. The Lil Song website has 5 or six different box designs. How do you choose between one of these or something different?

I’m having a cabinet professionally designed and built after measurements have been taken on the driver. Not using any of the Lii designs. ;)

That sounds better. I'm happy for you to share the designs with us when they're finished. I mean, just for curiosity's sake, of course

Halfway through building some Buschhorns (found the design on Stereonet) with Fostex FE103NVs. Had them in some small bass reflex enclosures. Sounded pretty good considering but base was obviously lacking.

Newly arrived Aurel Bryan 5 inch drivers in the Mk3 revision. Big changes with extra mass added to the cone, new doping, fill between whizzer and main cone, proper binding posts and a solid pole piece added. I'm looking forward to making some unusual TL cabinets for these sometime soon!

Interesting,... Field coils? Where do you source these from? A quick Google shows they're Indonesian drivers?

Not field coil, though he does make that as an option as well as neodymium. But yes made in Indonesia by a very clever and humble bloke.

@Grizzly do you have a thread started on these? I'd be interested in keeping track of your progress with these. Very interesting...... If I have space for a second system I'll keep in mind perhaps. Could be an interesting introduction to field coils for me  ;)

It'll be a while before I can get serious about the build sadly, but I will document it!

Sound great too in some cabinets I made for them previously before the upgrades, smoother with more weight and any traces of shoutiness gone

Depends on your preferences I think, top end is pretty good. Interestingly he does make a super tweeter as well!

Got them up and running. Just need to finish them in black. Pretty happy so for. They seem to image really well. Mids and bass are obviously better than previous small bookshelf enclosure. Quite a bit more revealing than expected. These replace some Rogers LS2as so I think makes sense. Still running a cheap old sub but wasn't planning on trying to get away from that. Already looking at a different/better driver and even a different amp (currently Azure 650a). Damn you upgrade-itis!!! Damn you!!!!

Interested on others experience with a driver upgrade and perhaps a more suitable amp. Might post in DIY thread to see others experience

Ha, true though really sonics are the only thing matter. They’re meant to be a very significant improvement over their previous reference drivers, the Silver-10. Given how good the Silver-6 are in a back loaded horn I figure these will be my final speakers.

Really though, I think you need a pair of these in your living room ;)
