I reckon NFTs have uses that mean they will become as important as Bitcoin (if not more)

Why so? Is it not just another fad? or here to stay?

One thing that worries me a lot is the increasing ability of "deep-fake" to create versions of reality that are literally impossible to tell apart from 'actual' reality. As an example have a look at this website (none of the images are of real people, they are all AI generated)

https://thispersondoesnotexist.com

I'm sure I don't fully grasp how NFTs work but it strikes me that in a future where "reality" can be easily generated on a computer, the ability to prove that something is truly genuine will become very important.

Yeah I've clicked reload more than a few times on that site lol. I found the middle tooth woman too hehe.

Thankfully though, deep fake stuff is always going to be bound to a PC... for now... But yes ownership and what is real or a copy, for sure... I don't see the value myself but each to their own.

I know this is off topic, but the ability to fake what a politician says or produce fake video of what they do, to me has terrifying implications. Not just politicians mind you, everyone...

In a world where we will be flooded with information that may or may not be true, we'll end up believing nothing because everything is deniable (the 'grab them by the *****' tape … just deny that it's real). That's a path we don't wanna go down.

Again NFTs may not be the answer to this (I may have misunderstood what they are), but if they are, that's a Good Thing

Will it do this forever? Not sure anyone knows the answer.

I started playing with this stuff just after it DIED in 2012 (the legendary Wired magazine death of bitcoin article) as it was a fun open source dead tech to tinker with. it still continues to be, and has been through hundreds more obituaries since then.

but a lot of people quite enjoy playing with it (excluding ideological and gambling^h^h^h^h^h^speculating reasons), I think the fun aspect of it has been underrated..

They fake it already somewhat with green screens. A few have been caught out pretending to be in places they were not, so they have no real issues fibbing for views anyway. This just makes their work easier again if that's the path they choose to go down. But it is frightening, we have never been more bombarded with views and information. Its a clickbait frenzy gone mad. like a mind virus.

Indeed.   The usecases for a tokens (fungible / non-fungible), are almost literally endless.

A simple example of a non-fungible token, could be a concert ticket.... it is a "unique token"

..... with the ability to encode unique information into the "NFT" ....  then the usecases become only limited by your imagination.

Most people at this point say "so what".... we've been doing this for literally ever.

A few important things, which the blockchain can solve:

  • The "double spending" problem.
  • A common / ubiquitous infrastructure.
  • The ability to transact with very weak network connectivity, or even offline (with a few caveats)

If I wanted to "prove" (lie, and trick you) that I was in a certain place at a cetain time in the past.... I could go back and edit evidence that was created in the past (eg. logs, security footage, etc. etc.)

If I planned ahead, I could even create fake evidence at the time in question ... so it looked like it was created at the right time.

Blockchains open up the possibility (through an agreed upon system of being able to prove something existed at a certain time, and was authenticated by certain entities) ..... that you could veryify that evidence about something..... was created at the time, by someone you can trust ... and you know it cannot be fabricated, or altered.    A key part of this is that the evidence created would remain private to the person who created it, until they choose to reveal it.    This means I can create evidence (say that I was in X places at Y times, or whatever/anything) and store it in such a "public" system .....  but "big brother" (or anyone, except me) cannot understand this information until I reveal it.

I think the future (within my lifetime?  dunno) involves a choice.  EIther "big brother" is going to track and know every single thing you do, say, see, hear and probbaly think

..... OR.  You will track all this informaiton yourself.... in a common system that cannot be faked or altered.   The information is private until you "choose" to reveal it (or are coerced, or whatever).

It may be the best chance we have to avoid a very very nasty technocracy dystopia.

One good benefit of falling Bitcon is that GPU prices will hopefully fall back to normal level.

Thank you for your insight into this topic. It's quite disturbing what can be done these days.

What I described has been possible since the invention of writing.

Blockchain can help to solve that huge problem (the rewriting or faking of history) .... it is so much more than nerdy 'internet money'

But much worse today with the ability to digitally edit footages etc right?

Not sure they could 'fake a polaroid' back in the day, then again nothing surprises me.
