No it's light reflecting on the ceiling where you'll notice the quality of finish.  As I mentioned even using a brush to cut in will produce a different finish to rolling that is visible - thus my painter cut in first up, then rolled  three times to get it even across the whole ceiling.  You'll notice an uneven finish in daylight, and also directly above the screen where there is more light.

The paint on my walls and ceiling is Haymes.

Are you using the Haymes Interior Expressions Low Sheen version? I'll take a look. :)

My theatre has  Matt British  Paints ‘dusty olive green ‘  all walls and ceiling, and gun metal gray carpet wall to wall.. lights down, very non reflective, gives good level of darkness.

nah wont derail a 3 page thread, adds to it imo.

floor.. yes almost forgot that important area. i actually painted mine black. my room my choice, it worked well but then i found some black carpet. it is funny how paint blacks are not really black and black carpet is not always black.

i got a load of velvet from Qld at about $12 meter delivered... but a good load, yet to install due to room rebuild being 1 year behind, thanks mr covid. i did some very basic testing in my 2nd room so will eventually see how that goes.

i do see you have the old w1070, a classic imo. the "black boxing" of my front stage out to 2m gave great benefit to my w1070/w1110

Thanks for the suggestion. That looks to be a satin finish so may be similar to a 'low sheen' of other paint brands? It's quite expensive at $140 for 4L.  How easy was it to apply a smooth finish and have you noticed many scuff marks?

Maybe it's the ceiling angle line that draws the eye to the finish. I used a British Paints custom domino colour in 'matt' finish in my previous theatre room for the wall behind the screen and the finish was good to my eye with a roller. As soon as I touched the wall it would go chalky and leave a permanent scuff though. If it's a ceiling that is painted and never touched again it may be ok, but I'd be looking at a low sheen minimum for any side and rear walls that could be touched by children etc. Have you tried the Haymes paints?

Thanks. I really like the black blockout curtains in my space. It gives it a nice frame to the front stage.

Have you found a supplier for 'Fidelio black velvet'? I think Rich at OzTheatre uses in his screen frames but I'm not sure he sells the fabric to the general public. I could go down that route but then I'd have the complexity of a false ceiling to stick the velvet to and it would no doubt cost substantially more than decent dark paint. I'm also considering going black fabric on my floor for the first 1-1.5m depth. I did a trial fit the other week and it seemed quite effective compared to my grey carpet tiles. That's one for my separate build thread though as I don't want to derail the OP's thread here on paint options.

Yes the Porters costs a bit more but it is a quality product and is a  nice paint to apply. It is pretty durable and resists scuffing a lot better than any of the other matt and flat blacks that we sampled.

As my room is also a bar room there is some traffic such as individuals staggering to the fridge to get another beer😀 and the finish is holding up quite well. You can purchase tester pots at bunnings which are about ten dollars from memory.

We did end up doing about 4 coats in the end and it does take a bit of skill to get a nice even finish but it looks a lot deeper and darker and not as chalkboardy as some of the others.

Haymes makes good paint. I used to be a Dulux fanboi, but their products nowadays are watery cr@p that take a zillion coats to get good coverage.

Yep, my neighbour painted his house interior with Haymes, we're both very happy with the product.  We both looked at Dulux, but passed on their products.  I had about 5 quotes before deciding upon my painter.  I was very specific that the lines between the black ceiling, white cornice and dark brown walls had to be sharp.  Most painters wanted to use Dulux, they certainly have a large chunk of the market.  My painter was very happy that I wanted Haymes.  I bought it myself and he said it was a pleasure to use.  It's still a family run business in Ballarat, but the father passed away last year.  Hopefully the quality remains.

Thanks all. I've now done the projector screen area and front 1.5m of my carpet below the screen with a black fabric that has worked well for immersion. It's not as absorbing as black velvet but still makes a good difference. The light coloured ceiling now really stands out so I'll have to make some enquiries on the Haymes Ultra Premium Expressions Interior extra dark tint and see if they can colour match the Dulux Domino in a low sheen.

Dulux still make good paints, the premium ones are best, just like any other brand.  I use Haymes almost exclusively as is the only Aussie owned company left.

Haymes can tint up to any colour you like, it may be slightly different to Dulux though. Same if you used Taubmans or whatever other brand

Do not recommend low sheen on your ceiling, reflections from screen will be fairly bad.

As I previously stated, I will probably try Resene spacecoat flat in my HT, however my house build probably won't even start until at least April.

Just had a chat to my local Haymes Paint. Has anyone tried the Haymes New Life Interior Wall paint in flat black finish? It’s supposed to have a 0-5% sheen and can apparently be maintained with a soft cloth and mild detergent solution.

I’m considering the flat black for my ceiling above the screen and then low sheen (easier to clean off fingerprints) in Domino colour for all my walls and the rear ceiling.

I have never used new life as it it basically Haymes' cheapest line of paints, so can't vouch for its 'wipeability' either. I use the expressions flat all the time and find it easier to use than their elite (mid level) line. New life may be the only one available in black though.

I ended up going with New Life as it was what Haymes recommended for a flat black theatre room. I’ve applied two coats solely to my ceiling. It seemed to work reasonably well. I haven’t had a chance to watch a movie yet so can’t comment on reflections. It certainly looks like a ‘black hole’ with the lights off in the room. I’ll try to report back here once I’ve had some demo time.
