Hi,

Looking for advice for new 4k Disc player to replace Sony X700 (which freezes - both video and audio for a few seconds).

Regards,

Ron

If you don't need Dolby Vision, Panasonic's UB420 for $275. There's no display and the case and remote are cheap.

If you want Dolby Vision etc, the UB820 can usually be negotiated for ~$500.

Then I'd recommend you stretch for the UB820.

FYI JB have the UB820 for $448 - cheapest I've seen one.

Would there be any difference in Audio quality between the UB420 and 820 using only HDMI (output 2 Audio) to receiver (non-4k). Not using analog outputs from the player.

No, wouldn't expect it to sound different.

I agree there should be no difference with HDMI outputs of the 420 and 820.

Outside OP's budget, but please note that I found the the UB9000 HDMI output to be better, perhaps aided by the better transport? So, with high end models, there may be a difference!

Panasonic UB820 can be made multi-region too (if that's of interest).  I've done this - not straightforward, but worthwhile.

What model is the avr Ron '  you say non 4k? The hdmi audio out is for older avrs that cant handle 4k hdcp 2.2... The release dates of hdcp 2.0 and hdcp2.2 was a schemozzle [ i like technical terms ] ; hdcp2.2 was required for 4k @ 60p that many components can put out in this space 👌

If you have an avr that is hdmi 1.4 or 1.3 and want to send full bandwidth 4k from a player or streaming you need the 820 or 9000.

Using HDMI 1 (Video) to Sony 4k TV and HDMI 2 (Audio only) to Marantz SR7002. Sounds great!

Your paying for the analogue stages and dac with the 820 Ron ; if you can look past the lack of DV the 420 is very good value . Have many dv discs ? The 420 has the same HCX processor as the 820 :)

Ron,

With my Sony X700, I find that if I clean the 4K disc with a lens cleaning cloth (even brand new discs) that the problem is solved *.  But I hear you - it is friggin' annoying when it happens!  The previous sony non 4k did the same thing on bluray and that worked with cleaning.

* I have one disc that this didn't work on and I had to use the DVD version to complete the movie.   That's one disc in about 15-20 that I've watched.
