and they can't include $10AUD worth of local power leads.

I'll take a punt at this - they 'likely' do not have Australian CE certification and electrical standards approval. I'm not saying they don't actually comply, but just they have not been tested nor issued a permit. A 'workaround' to avoid liability (that some distributors do) is the incorrect assumption that by not providing a means to connect to Australian electrical outlets, they avoid any liability. They are wrong of course. There are many Aussie distributors that go through the entire certification process before releasing products in Australia (it costs many thousands per product), then there are other distributors who simply ignore their legal obligations. Keep this in mind when you see another thread asking why products are so much more expensive in Australia. :)

Other markets don't require any certification?

100%.

This is a perfect example of a "hidden" cost, of which people are unaware when proclaiming the Australia Tax and how unfair it is.

It is one of many.

My apologies for the temporary OT.

Last post I will make on this as don't want to drag topic off topic (further than I already have). A manufacturer in Europe goes through a much simpler process to get approval for ALL of Europe (or key markets), and some approval will automatically grant you approval for other areas. The process in Australia is entirely unique to the Australian and New Zealand markets, and crazy expensive particularly if there is more than one product.

Happy to continue this discussion in a relevant thread that is already discussing this.

If the product does not not have local electrical certification (which I presume it doesn't as it has no mandatory RCM Regulatory Compliance Mark), that would make me responsible (as I am the direct importer), for the products electrical compliance & certification.

An interesting consideration.

and if your house catches fire, insurance will not cover it.    that is what all the naysayers state if one uses a US power cord, no matter how much better made they are vs the certified Aussie power cords.

Yes, costs bugger all to certify in other countries in comparison to the cost of certification here.
