I am new to this site and bear with me if I am asking too basic a question or repeating something discussed before.

I understand one needs to get progressive scan TV to enjoy watching new DVD players with the same feature. IS the quality of the image coming from the TV or the DVD progressive scan?

DO I really need to pay top dollar for a good DVD player like the Sony and Toshiba (i am not interested in SACD or top notch audio quality). Or should I spend on a good progressive scan TV or get a good line doubler...

My whole point revolves around where is the best place to spend the money on a good prog scan set up - the TV, DVD player or an external video scaling device?

It is better for the dvd player to do the decoding instead of the TV..

anyway to start from basic like wat I do,,,,first get a prog scan dvd player,,,,shinco 8700ps is a gud start. It is the cheapest dvd player which provides both prog scan mode in ntsc and pal as well. It is one of those "watever also can" dvd player.

also get a TV tat can accept prog scan....current ones in the market includes,,,toshiba, panasonic and jvc

just my 2cts worth of comment

Actually, most of the guys on AVSForum has feedback that passing a interlaced signal to a good external line doubler eg. Faroudja NRS would provide a better picture quality compared to the de-interlacing done by most DVD players.

Thanks for the feedback! So I guess if I'm only going for progressive scan pix quality I should get a basic DVD player with prog scan and spend the money on a good line doubler.

I'm looking for a basic prog scan DVD player. Is the Shinco player the best deal? I mean I've never heard of the brand and I wonder if the player can last the long haul? Or should I go for the Philips Q50 which I hear is a bargain versus the Sony ES9000.
