my system wif 2 AV receivers....1 receiver driving 1 pair JBL XE3 (Front) and 1 pair marantz LS-5A (got it free)(Center)...the other 1 driving DIY speakers (Rear).

if i'm going to buy a passive sub, do i need a AV to run the sub or simply connect the sub as follows:

1. front speakers to sub (output to main speakers)

2. sub to the AV (input from AV)

so there will be no direct connection between the front speakers and AV itself.

Does this affect the overall power output? seems it will draw some power from the AV.....newbie here....

need comment from u all....

thx for reading

Passive sub? I don't recommend anyone to use passive subs...... just doesn't make sense to use it when active subs today are cheap and good.

How much are u buying this passive sub?

I bet for a bit more, u can easily get a reasonable active sub.

It will be more flexible if u get active... can connect using speaker or line level outputs from ya AV receiver

If u go passive remember 2 config ya speakers setup to no subwoofer and front speakers to large. Connect ya sub 2 e front as u mentioned above.

phil, wat do u mean by 'config speakers setup to no sub and front speakers to large'??? thx..

For surround receiver /w DD & DTS, there will be a menu where u configure the speaker according to the capabilities.. e.g. if ya front is a floorstander.. than u will set it to large, full or etc. By doin that, e decoder will not reroute e bass portion of e front channel 2 ya subwoofer.

So in ya case.. since ya sub is connected to e front channel & not e subwoofer channel.. u will need 2 tell e decoder there is no subwoofer in ya set-up & all reroute e bass of e small speakers to ya front.

Its not necessary to match ur active subwoofer power to the amp power.

What is important is to buy the best subwoofer u can afford in your budget.

Since ur a newbie to HT, I'll give u some tips on what to look out for.

A good subwoofer should have :

-> tune-fulness in the 20-150 Hz freq.

-> phase adjustment capability

-> a way to control cut-off freq.

-> speaker level o/ps, although its really recommended

-> as much RMS power as u can afford

Good thing about buying an active sub, is that is won't suck power away from your av amp.

A good sub can last for 10 yrs easily. Mines doing 7 yrs now. Its a Paradigm PS-1000. It pumps out bass like mad. should be cheaper now, considering I paid s$600 for it 7 yrs ago!

Check out this link for its reviews. http://www.audioreview.com/Subwoofers/Paradigm,PS-1000/PRD_121036_2741crx.aspx

Also, read the manual for your Av amp, I think u are missing some important settings on your amp pertaining to bass management. Might be the reason for your lack of bass.
