Hello all,

Bought the philips DVD Q50 and a Sony 34" tv recently, and am puzzled by the cables.

Both the dvd player and the tv have cable inputs for progressive scan. But when I plug the cable into the respective ports, nothing comes out ... am wondering what is the problem. Can anyone help?

Do we use composite cables for these progressive scan ports? Or are there other "progressive scan cables"

Sry if these questions are being repeated ... very new to owning a tv n dvd player :p

There is nothing wrong with your cables. The reason why nothing happened in your case is because Sony TVs do not support progressive signal inputs from progressive scan dvd players and therefore cannot be used with the Q50 that you have.

The only TVs locally available that are known to support both NTSC and PAL progressive signal inputs from the Q50 are the Panasonic TAU GIGA series. The others like Toshiba and JVC will only support NTSC progressive from the Q50.

Huh .... what a waste ... you should have do more reading in this forum before investing in either one of the items .....

I think you try using the Q50 normal video components connection to the Sony TV and see are you happy with the results before thinking of other action ....

Other TVs that would support true progressive scan are the Loewe Digital TVs sold by Atlas sound.

Also supporting true progressive display are the Philips Pixel Plus range, and the new Samsung 32" widescreen Digital TV (both released next month).

PS Chia,

Can you make a list of all real Progressive SCan TVs available in Singapore ? This will be most helpful to many of us. To be fair we will get the moderators to make the thread sticky and locked under PJ/TV forum.

I have always been confused when friends asked me about TVs.

Jeff,Ender : Pls look out for it .

Thanks

No...BUt need to do a hack on it using your remote and PDA. Search the forum for that hack.

I have dug up the procedure on how to hack the Q50 to PAL progressive for those who have just bought the set and want to make it PAL progressive capable. Here it is:

Tools Needed:

1. Q50 Remote Control

2. A Palm PDA loaded with the OmniRemote software for multicode RC-6 capability

Step 1. (To make the Q50 PAL progressive capable)

1. Turn on Q50 with no disc inside.

2. Press "Play", "1", "5", "9" on your Q50 remote control

3. The panel on Q50 will show "-----------" (11 hyphen)

4. Enter "081000000000" on your Q50 remote

5. You will see the first 11 characters on Q50 panel (that's normal)

6. Press "Play" button

7. Your Q50 should have green color screen for a while then return to the normal 'No Disc' splash screen

8. The Q50 is now PAL prog. capable but has returned to region-lock status ie can only play R3 dvds.

Step 2. (To restore the multi-region capability of the Q50)

This procedure is discussed in this site:

http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/.../philips750.asp

1. Load your Palm PDA with the OmniRemote software and the multizone.pdb (trial version is available for downloading at www.pacificneotek.com)

2. Start the OmniRemote program.

2. Press the 955 multizone button on Omniremote to Q50 with no disc loaded in the Q50.

3. The panel on Q50 will show "-----------" (11 hyphen again)

4. Press "222222005255" on your Q50 remote control.

5. Press "Play"

6. Q50 panel will show a "lock" image

7. Switch off the player and switch it on again

You will now have a region-free Q50 with PAL progressive scan capability.

After the upgrade, the Q50's firmware version remains as 4.15i but the p-code has changed to P81.

By the way, before carrying out the PAL progressive hack, you should first check that your firmware version is the latest available which currently is still 4.15i, I believe. If it is not, you should upgrade your set's firmware version first BEFORE performing the PAL progressive hack. Details on how to check for the firmware version and carry out the firmware upgrade can be found at this site:

http://www.johnlau.com/q50.html

I would recommend though that if you do have to burn a CD-R with the upgrade file, you should do so using Nero Burning Rom or Adaptec EasyCD Creator and not by the DirectCD method outlined in the above site.

Perhaps the moderator would like to copy these procedures to the FAQ section for easy reference by forum members who bought the Q50 later in the future.
