ask yourself this questions:

how much does a new HTPC cost?

how much does a dvdp cost?

which is cheaper?

Let me rephrase your question.

First Setup.

HTPC (AKA DVDP) ->5.1 HT -> TV.

Second Setup

DVDP -> 5.1 HT ->TV.

If I get your drift, your 5.1 HT(consist of sub, speaker and amp) and TV is common to both setups.

Only diff is to use standard DVDP or HTPC DVDP.

Is this rite?

Hi Jag,

I believe for best PQ, it's better to connect directly to the TV. I guess 21" TV does not support VGA input, hence next solution would be S-Video input.

But which has better PQ?

A HTPC connect to TV using S-Video input?

or

A DVDP connect to TV using componet Input?

Drop e HTPC unless u r gonna use a projector/RPTV /w progressive scan.

With e same amount of $$$ u throw into e HTPC can get u a very good DVD player...

yeah, coz to use a HTPC as a DVDP is a very expensive DVDP.

I would say from DVDP to TV, use component, else S-video.

Same goes for HTPC.

If u're going to be like me, whenever wanna watch DVD, then disconnect every plug from my PC and lug the monster over to the HT room and and connect it to the proj (TV in your case), AMP, mouse/keyboard, then u can save a bit :D . no need buy another DVD player.

my HTPC doubles as a workstation

i did try to connect my ATI READON ALL-IN-WONDER S-video out to my philip 21" flat screen TV n compare it with my pioneer 737A(use s-video connection) in my bed room.....

i can only tell u that the DVDP is better in everyway(PQ,sound,operating....) :)

with my 29" old TV, i dun see much difference in quality on dvdp or pc w/gf, sound and video is almost the same. except that for pc, i can set an overscan so that i can see "more" but with a disadvantage of border; and also the fan and hdd sound from the pc is louder than dvdp. so if u wanna use amd for htpc, forget it; intel still ok if u use stock fan

If can't afford or can't accomodate a proper 5.1 HT setup with proper Hi-fi speakers, then a HTPC is much better than those HTiB solutions.

A HTPC is a all-in-one solution, so great for space-conscious rooms.

Yes, Rf interference is very strong, esp from a PC.

But many people are prepared to ignore the RF interference when it comes to PC audio.

PC audio sound will have all sorts of interference, thus degrade the sound quality all together.
