I hope I'm asking at the correct forum. Can anyone tell me about the media? Meaning, quality wise, benefits if any over DVD and any special players needed? Just curious cus I came across it's mention in DVDTalk.

if i am not wrong.....the D-VHS that rec the HDTV are far better then the DVD in PQ cos of their resolution is 720P/1080i compare to dvd 480/525p.....

for sound the the later D-VHS also can rec. the mpeg 2 ACC which also come with 5.1 surround sound....

and lastly i doubt that we can rec a D-9 DVD direct into the D-vhs cos of the copyright codec in DVD..

am i right?

i think TV mobile and TCS is broadcasting in DTV, not HDTV.

HDTV is not DTV. Very different. DTV transmits 4:3 interlaced video digitally. Still same number of 525 scan lines and aspect ratio..... DTV is just clearer and less prone to noise & interference. In short, SDTV (standard definition TV) is being sent digitally, instead of the old analog transmission

HDTV (High Def. TV)is totally different animial altogether. Its going for 1080i or 720p. Transmission signal aspect ratio is finalised on 16:9 format. Its also sent digitally, but more complex hardware needed for all.

No TV station here transmits HDTV signals. But DTV signals are already being transmitted now.

Thats what I know, unless someone can speak up otherwise.

A link on HDTV & DTV in singapore. Its a 99 document, but still very relevant given Singapore's cautious approach towards new technology.

For those receiving TV mobile and TCS on DTV, check to see if your receiving Dolby AC-3 audio bit-stream.

Not sure if they are transmitting PCM, MPEG or AC-3 for their audio.

DTV on AC-3 should give u 5.1 if TCS wishes to anyway.

JVC holds the Copyright to D-VHS tapes, and they are trying to kickstart the HDTV market. Inbuilt copy protection ensures that you cannot record from DVD. Video quality is reputed better than DVD, but you need a Special Player to play, and a true HDTV to display its full capability. It will cost $$$ to set up, because even normal Digital TVs are scarce in Singapore currently. Don't even try asking for an HDTV unless you want the salesman to think you've escaped from Woodbridge.

IMO, the high cost will spell its eventual doom, even though Widescreen Review seems to have taken an early fancy to these tapes, and telling everybody to abandon their DVDs.

Also, they forgot to mention that like the old Video Tapes, these D-VHS tapes will also grow fungus and bye-bye to your expensive movie collection !

Thanks everyone for sharing the info... ;D

I don't think I'll ever revert back to tape lah....just curious as to what the D-VHS can do. Anyways, I don't even have a VCR at home now....and I won't be getting any in the future. These kind of linear media is definitely dated. Why forward and reverse when there's chapter selection and time selected scene jumping to use... ;D

Have a JVC D-VHS 3500 and the PQ is stunning. Order it from HK. God a recorded Gladiator in 720P on a S-VHS tapes.Really blow the DVD format. However as it is only in tapes repeated viewing and rewinding will wear it though.

For those who have been to the states or the UK, they have such a thing called TiVo or Reply.

Its hard disk MPEG-2 recording..... similar to video recording on a HTPC, but designed for family use as a consumer unit. Its like a DVD recorder but records on harddisk. It has great upgradability for today and tomorrow...... I still wonder why Singapore does not have it even though its been in those countries for 4 years.

I felt it was the ultimate recording device parallel only by DVDR in terms of PQ.

Search for TiVo or Replay on yahoo.....

Does your machine has the D-theater logo? I read from widescreen review that only the US machine has this logo and capable of player the DVHS movie release in US. That's why I am still hold off buying one. Love to see your the PQ comparing to my scaled 720P.

Actually, I am referring to a new encryption (D-theater) created by JVC. JVC pursaded a lot of studio (with the exception of Sony and Warner Bro. ) to release their movie in high definition (1080i) with the introduction of D theater to protect the copy right of HD material. The first few movie release will be U-571, Terminator II and X-men.

Based on an article in widescreen review which states only the US version of D-VHS made by JVC is enable with D-theater.

If you want to know more you can check out www.widescreenreview.com.

Much as I also drool over the quality of DVHS that I saw at Best Denki display in Taka, my view is still that to buy a DVHS Player and the accompanying software tapes is gonna cost a bomb, and is highly impractical in SIngapore's context given our strict Censorship locally.

Not only you will face the same kind of nonsensical censorship problems from our Big Brother FPD, the current range of movies is too limited for those who enjoy a wide range of movies currently available in DVD Format. Some of the movies that I am looking for are already difficult to track down even in DVD Format, and have to search many online stores just to find the movie that I want. It would be almost impossible to see the current range of 16,000 DVD movies released in DVHS.

Widescreen Review magazine has taken up a stake in promotion of DVHS, and they alone are promoting this medium. If you read other Home Theatre mags, you will realise that, apart from singing praises about the quality of the High Definition pictre, they are all lukewarm about the future success of DVS tapes for all the reasons of high cost & limited software (currently only 8 movies). This Format only caters to the mega-rich who don't bat an eyelid at throwing money away like water, and can afford to throw the Player away when the entire DVHS medium fails.

What's more, its still a tape, and at the end of the day, when Fungus sets in given the high humidity in Singapore, its bye bye to the tape. I had to throw away all my old fungused VHS tapes and wasted so much money on my precious collection of VHS movies which I paid high prices to collect the original VHS tapes over the years. :'(
