khtan Posted August 15, 2002 Posted August 15, 2002 Are aegis good? better than misssion m70 seris? what's the approx cost of the following? 2 AEGIS Compact 1 AEGIS EVO Centre 2 AEGIS EVO Three
dbchoong Posted August 15, 2002 Posted August 15, 2002 Used to own Aegis One and Center, but not the Evo series. Looks quite similar, so I guess sound should be almost the same. They are not bad, but I think the Aegis perform better as hifi stereo speakers rather than HT speakers. It has nice mids, but its bass and highs is slightly lacking. Probably Evo 3 might be able to produce decent bass since it's a huge floorstander compared the my old Aegis One bookshelf. Price wise, not sure at all. But I can guess, right? (maybe totally wrong). Aegis Compact (pair): $400 Aegis Evo Center: $270 Aegis Evo 3: $600 For HT speakers at around the same price, you may want to consider the Energy or Kef. Just my thoughts.
khtan Posted August 15, 2002 Author Posted August 15, 2002 How does it compare to mission m70 series? any idea? What do u suggest for KEF? Used to own Aegis One and Center, but not the Evo series. dbchoong Posted August 15, 2002 Posted August 15, 2002 Not sure about Missions cause I've not heard them much. As for KEF at about $1400 - the KEF KHT-2005 speakers is pretty good. But these are satellite type rather than huge speakers. Energy also has something similar about the same price range. Sounds pretty good too. Somehow, I prefer small satellite type speakers for HT. They look better. ;D How does it compare to mission m70 series? any idea? What do u suggest for KEF?
Lancelot Posted August 15, 2002 Posted August 15, 2002 IMO, KEF speakers are quite expensive in singapore, much more expensive compared to Mission.
Lancelot Posted August 15, 2002 Posted August 15, 2002 Mission m70 series are value for money when it comes to HT purposes, they are quite good.
khtan Posted August 15, 2002 Author Posted August 15, 2002 Any experience with Aegis Evo? Mission m70 series are value for money when it comes to HT purposes, they are quite good.
Lancelot Posted August 15, 2002 Posted August 15, 2002 Have not heard of Aegis Evo series, so cannot give you any comments. But recently, the Aegis Evo series are given good reviews by some hifi mags, including What Hifi.
Fowler Posted August 16, 2002 Posted August 16, 2002 The Acoustic Energy Aegis Evo Series.... As compared to the previous model, Aegis, the AE Evo has a different "character". Although the 2 look rather similar, there are several changes were noted between the two namely the crossover is reworked, the tweeters & drivers were all new components. Even cabinet size is different... Comparing apples to apples... Evo 1 vs Aegis 1 (Music) - Evo less aggressive with the tweeter & driver to give a more relaxed sound. Those who like a more forward should look at Aegis. Evo more refined (Less harsh) & smooth sounding. Excellent for guitar/female vocal music. Finishing is top notch for Evos. Thumbs up for Evo for music (Or as a competant surround speaker)! Evo 3 vs Aegis 3 (HT) - Almost similar remarks as above. However I would like to add that the Aegis 3 here has a "little" disadvantage BUT also an advantage! The bass in the Aegis 3 has been defined as FAT or overly rich. However a little cable knowledge with cable selection or a minor speaker internal tweak would bring this speaker to a higher level. Plus..... the new lowered price of the Aegis makes it attractive. Admittedly the AE Aegis or Evo speakers are "Jack of all trades" (Leaned slightly over the music side), BUT then again these are speakers that hold their own very well as compared to some other JOAT speakers, evenly more over "more famous" brands. The AEs are not choosy on partners and this is a plus point for compatability. If you do not have the luxury of having separate dedicated music & HT setups, AEs are highly recommended for you, otherwise look elsewhere (Especially dedicated HT speakers but then again these sound crappy when playing music). Last note about AE, they take too long to run-in... (When they are finally done, HEAVEN!) Aesthetically, the KEFs look great but I have not auditioned a run-in set yet to comment more.

desray Posted August 16, 2002 Posted August 16, 2002 I believed it's Fowler's own review. Very well reviewed. I think ONE WORD to sum all up lar. Listening is Believing! Go down to Adelphi and demo yourself. Words and reviews from many sources only makes you "baffled" to a certain extent. :D

khtan Posted August 17, 2002 Author Posted August 17, 2002 How long does it take to run-in? Is there really a lot of diff after run-in? The Acoustic Energy Aegis Evo Series.... desray Posted August 17, 2002 Posted August 17, 2002 It takes almost 80 to 90hrs of run-in...for AE Speakers.

khtan Posted August 17, 2002 Author Posted August 17, 2002 Not from People's Audio. I did call them to ask for speaker prices but got bad attitude from them so not buying from them >:(. Got it from Par Audio (distributor for AE) in sls 1st floor. Price reasonable?
desray Posted August 17, 2002 Posted August 17, 2002 I was quoted by Lawrence...I guess the Boss of Par Audio. He's a nice chap who replies promptly with my emails...And he's the one who quoted me $950.00 for AE EVO 3 alone. I think should be a good buy lar...moreover there are the main distributor in Singapore...Anything faulty can refer to them directly and they will assist you...:) Are you served by Jason? ;D
khtan Posted August 17, 2002 Author Posted August 17, 2002 By Sam. Anyway I'm using 2 Evo One for surround, any idea is it ok to use a center speaker for back surround or just an extra Evo One? Evo One sells in pairs right? I was quoted by Lawrence...I guess the Boss of Par Audio. desray Posted August 17, 2002 Posted August 17, 2002 IMO...get the EVO Centre speaker lor. So as to get tonal balance...sonically identical. ;) I also thinking of getting the whole set. But have to get rid of my current speakers first...I can't stand to see so many speakers lyinga round in my house...hehe. Khtan, congrats on your latest acquisition. Enjoy! ;D

khtan Posted August 19, 2002 Author Posted August 19, 2002 I'm a newbie to such stuff ;D. Furthermore I'm only collecting my evo 3 few weeks later as i'll be using it in my still renovating new flat. Also i'm still using pioneer vxs-d409 receiver which i intend to upgrade later, any good and cheap recommendation which improves a lot from my current pioneer? We have to ask khtan...to give us some insights to that then. khtan...? ;D
