chucks Posted August 29, 2002 Posted August 29, 2002 Actually, I've a few examples on KEC's pricing: - Interconnect $150, other shop $110 - Speaker cables $49/m w/o termination, other shop $45/m inclusive of termination. - CDP $899, other shop $800. (BTW, I did not audition any of the above at KEC) For those who know me will understand which other shop I am talking about. ;D "that shop" is the retailer/dealer. if KEC sells, they earn. if they sell, they still earn. thus doesn't matter to them if they quote lower. its a strategy to push sales. all i can say is to each his own.
desray Posted August 29, 2002 Posted August 29, 2002 "Arm Tui" lor....hahaha... or "Pui" saliva lor... and my personal comments, this is part & parcel of doing business...doesn't means that when i give a demo or quotation to a potential client, and i'll expect the potential client to buy from me.....BUT, if i know that my competitor is offering slightly lower prices than ME...i'll definitely match it!!.. I agreed with jw...but was wondering if bagegar had asked KEC for better price and at the sametime hint that other shop is selling cheaper? Dun ever use this technique of **hinting** to Clarence. He abhored the whole idea. If you a regular customer then perhaps he will tell you the rationale why his price as opposed to other shop's pricing is slightly higher. If you a newbie...he will rather get agitated and to a certain extent annoyed...for hinting to him that other shop selling cheaper...he will tell you straight in the face - Then like that, you go to "that shop" and buy lor...in a polite manner of course. That's his style...but does'nt mean he's a tyrant, I have to admit he's very good to customers in his service...he will try to convince you and introduce you some AV gadgets which he think is good...and will not try to push those eXpensive stuff to you. I bet for those whom have deal with him before should know his style lar...:) For me, I will be assisting him in the updates and maintenance of his website I guess...coz $15.00 means alot to me too...:P
Guest jonlee Posted August 30, 2002 Posted August 30, 2002 Alternatively, we can always ask the price at PA first before going to KEC. If the quote from KEC is reasonable, then proceed to do the audition from KEC and buy from them if u like the sound. If the price from KEC is "too high" (depends on individual), then try not to autition at KEC. BTW, not everything from PA is cheaper. Their maramtz CDP are more ex compared to KEC, but we all know which shop is cheaper than KEC.

Go to the shop which has the most attractive price and demo. If you like it and there are no strings attached, close the deal. No need to create any unhappiness and waste other people's time. Regarding some prices shop A cheaper, some prices Shop B cheaper..... irregardless whether you are in "sales" or think you know the AV industry well enough.... it's never what you think it is till you are in the salesman or boss' seat. Without saying too much to spoil the trade secrets, some items are priced at ridiculously low profit but compensated by some other items to compliment the total overall profit margin. If everything is sold at ridiciculous low margins, it doesn't matter even if you are the richest AV dealer in the world, your business will not generate enough profit to cover shop overheads, let alone salaries.

Quite difficult as most shops do not wish to disclose pricing over the phone. I also realised that price is different over the phone and in person at the shop. I once called a shop, the sales man promised me that his price would definitely beat every other shops but refuse to disclose the price over the phone. Asked him what happen if I go down and he couldn't give me the lowest price? But he still insist that his price is the lowest - lowest to him maybe!! >:( BTW, the shop's name starts with "A" ;D Another thing is that I hate those salesman who talk big...let's say you knew that the component cost around $2000. And you called to this shop asking for pricing...the reply was: "Ohh, this model, very expensive one leh...cost $3599 but for you, I give you special price at $2500". - Buay Tahan!! >:(
desray Posted August 30, 2002 Posted August 30, 2002 Agreed with Duckling...some shops dun like to disclose prices over the phone. They always said come down here and I give you a better price..trust me!? The rationale I can think of is that the shop's bosses dun want any rivals sneaking around and poking their noses into their shop and ask for the price that they offered to the buyers...
JT Posted September 2, 2002 Author Posted September 2, 2002 Thanks guys for your reply. I have checked at KEC and I was quoted S$785 (without subwoofer, is it a good price? ) for the M71 cinema pack. Im planning to buy at the end of this month. Thanks again.
bagegar Posted September 2, 2002 Posted September 2, 2002 JT, Do call People's Audio or other shops in this List: www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?board=5;action=display;threadid=116 for some competitive quotes. Take duckling's advise, visit your short-listed vendors and they may give you additional discounts and/or free speaker cables & other stuffs.
Fowler Posted September 2, 2002 Posted September 2, 2002 I also realised that price is different over the phone and in person at the shop. That is so true sometimes.... I have encountered too many times where "customers" come asking me for price quotation for XXX model. When I give them my price, they'll tell me dis shop/dat shop gave them $100+ cheaper.... they could be telling lies but even my own cousin (CHAMPION PRICE SHOPPER) claims he called "the famous few" shops and was given "Special Price". I told him if the price was indeed true, go buy from them as I would sell at a loss at that price. He made a trip there to find out that there is nothing but hot air....
Guest ckkoh1 Posted September 5, 2002 Posted September 5, 2002 My Dad and I both like Clarence's services. My dad especially gets so easily "suckered-in" by him at times, coz this guy is really good at marketing. Even I also cannot escape his "sweet lips". I was intending to get a new pair of Missions to replace my old ones, but ended up buying the Jamo Concert 8's after a comparison between them. Jamo clearly is the winner, but at a high price of course.
Fowler Posted September 6, 2002 Posted September 6, 2002 Congrats on your purchase... I do agree with you that the Jamo Concerts ROCK big time!
