Jose Posted September 8, 2002 Posted September 8, 2002 Thinking of replacing my old trusty DVDP because it doesn't play PAL, Region 4-6 disks, no auto region change, etc etc etc ... Looking at models with all the feature my old player lacks (should be pretty standard on most players now), and with additional features like SACD playback, RCE (hopefully) and DVD-A playback (hopefully), etc. Progessive scan output is not a must. Any recommendations? I know Pioneer 733A and Sony NS700V. What's the pricing like? Any other recommendations and comments on people who've used these players? Thanks!

I think there are a few choices: Philips 963SA (1k) Pio 733A (1k) (does DVDA also) Sony 9000ES (1.5k) Marantz 8300 (1.6k) (does DVDA also) IMHO: sony is very cool looking, so if u r into this then this is the most pretty player. Its two-channel SACD playback is very good. ( I heard at sony showroom wisma last time. u can go there and ask for a demo). 733A's PQ is good. The color is very film like, not so bright as Philips. ( I owned a 733A before, compared that with a Q50). But its audio playback is not very good. Ppl said 8300 is based on 733A with the audio section redone. So I hope it is better. 963A is being highly anticipated with better PQ, and at least decent multi channel SACD playback. The highlight of the 963A is it can do both PAL/NTSC prog and use the (presumably better) Sage chip, better audio section. Everybody is waiting for its release in Oct. Just personal opinion: the feedback on Philips Sage based players has been very positive. And since it can do both PAL/NTSC prog, and claims this time it does better audio, it seems to be a better bet. Anyway it is cheaper.
Guest joamonte Posted September 10, 2002 Posted September 10, 2002 IMNO Sony 9000ES is too old already,i beleive new model will coming soon,further more its the last genaration 2 channel only SACD... so better dun take the risk... for me i would choose the marantz 8300,its SACD and CD sound much better then 733a, i also heard then its PQ is about the same as 733a,not the best PQ in the world but at least some standard there.... :)
