1. Newbie intend to buy HT speaker system (Sat + Sub type) and AV amp around $2k before year end. Can help to recommend "value for money" combination? :P

2. Today happen to be at IMM and saw the shop demo Alantic Tech with Roberson sub + Denon 1603 at $1999. Is that good value?

3. Is it worth to buy HT speaker system online?

All inputs are welcome and thank you in advance.

For $2k, queks' setup is pretty good deal. Much better value than the Atlantic Tech/Robertson/Denon combination.

The RX-V800 is much better than the Denon 1603 except that it does not have DPLII. I think Yamaha's DSP modes should more than compensate for that.

Buying online is a little risky (if you mean from overseas). If you're unlucky and got a bad unit, getting warranty/exchanges is going to be very difficult.

For new units for under $2k, you can try checking out KEC's website.

That is one risk + charge to card and don't ship then die ;D

But a lot cheaper la. Consider local selling Klipsch Quintet Micro & KSW10 Sub at S$1.5k but USA only US$550.

I just got my modest HT setup from www.kec-sound.com

Spent about $2K on Take 5.2 + S8.2 subwoofer & Marantz 4200. Working well for me. To a newbie like me, the choice of speakers would have the greatest impact on sound quality, that's why I went for the Take 5.2 instead of the Mirage (which costs $300 less). The Marantz 5200 did not sound much different to me, and I guess it has to be the 6200 or the Yammie RX-V630 to make an easily discernible difference. Hence I went for the lowest end receiver from Marantz.

Oh, the Dolby ProLogic II does make a difference to me when I play LD (yes, I have a nice collection of LDs before DVD came about) and even VCDs (can't find Ultraman Tiga/Gaia DVDs ;)). For stereo source, the DB II is quite effective for me - the use of centre speaker for voice is quite convincing.
