loti Posted December 9, 2002 Posted December 9, 2002 Hiya! I have a 2 speaker system set up, with an amp, a CD player and a tuner (for my wife ;D). I have just placed an order for a TV, and am wondering if a 2 Speaker HT system is possible? and what DVD player would go well in such a setting. Amp: Audio Analogue Puccini SE Speakers: Triangle Zephyr II

Amp: Audio Analogue Puccini SE Speakers: Triangle Zephyr II Nope! :'( HT is all abt surround.. & 2 have proper surround steering effects u need at least 5.1 speakers. Ignore all bullshits like virtual dolby digital, sensurround, 3D sound & etc. They r juz adding echo or playing /w phase shift 2 give u a "spacious" feeling. If u r juz thinking abt getting e great video images of a DVD then go ahead & get yaself a DVD player but I dun consider a 2 speakers setup as a HTS. Phil
dbchoong Posted December 9, 2002 Posted December 9, 2002 Depends on how much surround you want. If you just want big sound for movies and not be immersed in superb surround sound, then I guess a stereo setup will work. But as Phil said, if you want HT.. it's gotta be at least a 5 speaker setup. ;D
loti Posted December 9, 2002 Author Posted December 9, 2002 Well... I guess there may be a need to get a decent AV receiver that does stereo, and slowly get more speakers...

ongus Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 There is a bid difference between HT set up and surround sound. You CAN do HT set up in two channel stereo. Most if not all the surround sound sets ups at home are far far below ideal. Read spk placement: http://www.dolby.com/ht/Guide.HomeTheater.0110.html and tell me how many homes have got it right. I went from 5.1 to 2.0 and am happier than before. So is my wife - fewer cables running everywhere. In my 2.0 system, I can actually hear, and most importantly feel, the F14 coming from behind in a Top Gun scene where Tom Cruise was on his bike at the end of the runway.

Yes!agree 2.0 can do that, got the same experience with my system too..... but thats only can be hear in sweet spot (centre of the two spk)....seat on the side and the effect all gone.

What decoding system you're using? To have that affect of position surround with two speakers, a play in phase delay between the two speaker is needed, and that requires DSP processing and your software(DVD/LD) to be encoded with information...

I believe ongus is not applying any decoding or DSP 2 his source.. quite amazing if his 2.0 system can re-create a full 5.1 effect. Ongus.. have u tried some demo material 2 test whether ya system can handle proper surround steering? Phil

Ongus.. have u tried some demo material 2 test whether ya system can handle proper surround steering? Phil Directional and postional surround is possible with two speaker. As mentioned before, this requires complex algorithm to play around with the phase difference between the two speakers. Commercially the now defunct A3D use to have it, and right now we have Sound Blaster EAX, though not too great. That's why I'm curious what decoding system he is using, which I'm sure is neither A3D or EAX.
Jag Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 Its possible to create some semblence of 5.1 from 2.0. Front steering yes, but back steering is impossible. Otherwise, M-ch surround wouldn't have emerged in the first place. The laws of physics just defies this. Honestly, in a 2.0 system, any surround steering in the rear is just a big blurry blob of sound. Probably in Top Gun, that F-14 scene just gave you a blurred surround that gradually focused itself as the tomcat flew from back to front. In a properly setup 6.1 system, such surround effects and pans shouldn't just make you feel as though you're in a cinema. It should make you feel as thou you’re in the movie itself.
ongus Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 Personally I am more into watching movies because I like the stories. Sound effect is a distant second, if not third or fourth. So, I am not saying a 2.0 is equivalent to 5.1, or a full surround effect, but I am saying with 2.0 there is a lot less hessle, eg do not have to be bothered with what comes next after DTS, or what comes next after 5.1 (by the looks of it, 5.1 is already an out-dated set up), more tidy (fewer cables running around), concentration of budget on just a few items. No offense to the surround sound crowd, the other point of mine is that the wrong placement of speakers literally render most, if not all, surround systems a cruel waste of $$.
loti Posted December 18, 2002 Author Posted December 18, 2002 Hi Ongus.. Really interested to know what's your set-up is like (playerss, amps, cables, speakers, etc.) Care to share?
