One thread for your reference...

frankly this question has been asked answered quite often. YOu could get the answer easily by doing a search. Unless of course, you have read the threads and is looking for something specific. Frankly I for one don think feel there is a fantastic DVD player below $500 (unless 2nd hand of coz)

Of coz your overall setup also matters.

i did do a search, read the link also. but those are ~$300 or less dvd players, i need something better.

something like panasonic RP-82 or pioneer 633a. i heard both are ~$500.

maybe i should say around $500?

Why don't you wait for next year and see what new anouncement , the dvd group may officially approve PAL progressive scan features to be enable in progressive scan dvd player.

For DcDi chipset , presently Panasonic RP-82 should be the cheapest about S$440 and most of the others who uses this chipset their players easily cost S$700 and above.

If you don't mind to settle for Zoran latest chipset "V" version , you can settle with Toshiba 5700 or 5300 about S$480. A lot of good comments on this player but hear that Zoran is coming out with and "VI" version chipset soon.

As for Pioneer , they are using their ownchip set so no comments ... their 633a is old model and they are clearing stock ... you can look at their new model 655a which have both DVD-A and SACD ... should cost about S$490

As for other brand like Aiwa , JVC , Sony , Shinco , Yamaha , ENZER , WIZE , Denon , Marantz , LG and Samsung etc , maybe others can pour in their view.

Norman_Chan, thanks for the advise and info. :)

actually, i was gonna wait till next year. but i do not have a DVD player now. i am not joking, currently using dvdrom to watch some movie. :P i am not saying the display is lousy but the sound, my sb live doesnt support 5.1 output. also the current comp system is kind of unstable due to age. not to mention i gotta disconnect everything and wire up again from room to hall.

so pioneer has a new 655a to replace 633a...think i did saw this model, but its kind of cheaply made compare to 633a. will check out the panasonic RP-82, any neg on it? i had never heard of toshiba using Zoran chipset, could you explain?

thx, will come back here tomorrow morning.

For the Toshiba the Zoran chipset was mentioned in the AVS Forum , someone bought it and open the casing and saw it is using the chipset. this player is make in Japan if I'm not wrong. The model is SD-5300a.

For S$480 was offer by People Park shop during one of my window shopping trip.

for the new Pioneer 655a , I think this is make in China and for the old model 633a is make in Japan but pls go to the shop and re-confirm by yourself.

For the Panasonic RP-82 is make in Japan, a lot of good comments was given to this player and that was the reason I bought it few months back.

OK, just search thru the web for Zoran info. for those interested,

Zoran's Vaddis Shipping in Toshiba's New Generation of DVD-Audio Players.

Vaddis® DVD Decoder ICs Enhancing the DVD Experience! .

Toshiba SD-510E

Toshiba SD-5300A

kind of chaos by toshiba model naming for thier dvd player. it looks like SD-5300A is SD-5300 in Austrialia, SD-5500 in Japan, SD-5700 in US and SD-510E in europe. with DVD-A, HDCD and progressive scan, it looks quite a good buy for under $500.

i believe toshiba still has the chroma upsampling error, so as the player using DCDi chipset, how about pioneer using mitusbishi chipset? what chip is panasonic RP-82 using?

thx.

The RP-82 is using the DCDi chipset and also because of the competitive price and slim design , that why I bought it.

Before I bought the RP-82 was also considering the SD5300a and the DV-655a , maybe my next upgrade will try Pioneer ... but for DVD recorder will most likely bend toward Philips ....

Let me as you all two questions, as I am quite confused.

Would I be right ion saying that the Pioneer 655A is the same as the Pioneer 656A that is WHF magazine's product if the year?

Toshiba has also got me confused, is the 220E out in Singapore yet, or is it under a different model number?

Posted

UK has got the same models as the rest of the world, just that theirs have got a slightly different model number.

I'm pretty sure the rationale for this is that their UK domestic models are slightly different in that theirs spot the SCART connectors which US, Jap, Austr. and Asian models don't need.

yes, but I have not seen anything in singapore that looks exactly the same as the Toshiba 220E. So either it is not out in Singapore, or I don't know where to look.

Can anybody tell me which it is?

Y not just limit your shorlist to those models available locally? That would be a more practical approach. ;)

;D

I study in the UK you see, so if no choice

I can always bring one back.

But very leceh lah, I'd prefer to find one here.

Probably cheaper too if its here

Thanks anyway for your advice

Cheers

For sure I know UK dvd players are not sold elsewhere except maybe in the EU; unless they are parallel imports.

But usually, UK dvdps are slightly modified for the UK domestic market. Otherwise, they tend to be largely the same elsewhere around the world.

Things they change include

1) inclusion of a scart connector

2) styling and colour (noticed their AV amps tend to be black as oposed to our preference for gold? ;))

3) satisfy the domestic electrical applicance approval.

4) them having a RGB component out rather than YPrPb.

BTW, Richer sounds sell pretty cheap dvdp since you're there. If you are pronto crazy, its much cheaper there too!

Hmm..

Sorry to bump in, but where can I get the Pioneer 655A for $490? ??? HN/BD quote around $599 for it...

Thanks much! :D

2) styling and colour (noticed their AV amps tend to be black as oposed to our preference for gold? ;))

is this also true for the us? in the us, they have the black color option for marantz receivers whereas i think we only have the gold color here in asia. issit?

I've never really asked for black colour amps thou I prefer them in gold. Just looks nicer to me in gold. ;D ;D

Can ask for black amps the next time you're buying them.
