mikizee Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 Been at the Wheatsheaf Hotel here in Adelaide a few times over the last couple of weeks, during July they have the 'Font of Darkness' which is a whole bunch of taps dedicated to stout and dark ales. A few I've sampled have been- Southwark Stout poured through a glasshopper filled with Luwak coffee beans (delicious!!) Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout 8 Wired Double Coffee Brown Ale Grand Ridge Hatlifter Stout Young's Double Chocolate Stout Prickly Moses Black Panther IBA Steam Exchange Choc Milk Stout Bridge Rd B2 Bomber I could go on. The most surprising stout I had was a bottle of Cascade Stout, really was not expecting much but it was very tasty! Huge hits of coffee and chocolate.
Luc Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 Yes corona is scraping the barrel a bit. About to head out on another day of search for cold beer so thxs for the link. I,d kill a COOPERS red label!

The family and I are travelling down in October so I'm now adding it to the itinerary. It's been a long time since Southwark has been available around here and I've missed it. Definitely one of the more hardcore stouts.
Catostylus Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 Mods, can mention of Corona in this thread be banned, please? 1

The owners are very friendly and happy to chat beer all day. No pokies, just log fires, tons of different beers and whiskeys. Its considered one of the best craft beer pubs in the country. Here's their website - http://wheatsheafhotel.com.au/ As far as Southwark stout goes, Jade the owner of the Wheaty told me it was almost completely deleted all together, the bean counters citing poor sales. Well, that's what happens when you stop kegging it and selling longnecks of it. Jade and a bunch of other people campaigned Lion to keep making it, and for the first time in 4 years they've kegged it for winter. I'm amazed Lion don't promote the beer more. Its definitely one of Australia's best stouts.

Ah Southwark, reminds me of a story a mate likes to tell of his first vistis to SA as a young man. He heads into the pub and not recognising any of the beers on tap, he goes for the closest option and asks for a pot of "south-wark" the barman replies with "thats 'suthick', you c**t!" then pours him a beer

I am partial to a Jagermeister nightcap however...but I guess a whisky will do Doesn't surprise me about LNB and their bean counters. Multi-nationals will always struggle with the concept of quality > quantity. Maybe Coopers or some decent local micro-brewery should buy the Southwark name to keep it real, so to speak. The Old Stout is worth preserving imo but I guess all things come to pass eventually. see you at the 'sheaf Edited July 27, 2012 by rehabitat
The Fez Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 I'm in Singapore at the moment and although I was informed about the expense and lack of choice, I'm really surprised at how hard it is too find, A. Good beer and B. A really cold beer 20$ for two pints of Stella served in warm glasses. Most beers seem to be in 320 ml cans 330 ml. Found a Japanese bar that has corona for $8 and Thats the best I've found so far. ( excuse the spelling etc as I,m on the phs keypad) When I was in Singapore some years ago..you got jugs of Tiger, from those beer kiosks. I mean its always so bloody hot and humid right? The beer was always cold and you'd drink at the outside venues..Its all outdoors there anyways. But I do remember the beer being cold. In fact it was cold out of the tap, then put in a cold jug and the jug was then put in an ice slurry in a bucket!. You need that in Singapore and would be a good way to go too in a Sydney summer. You just go back - get the jug re-filled and dunk it back in the ice.....

Coopers Celebration Ale I found that a little disapointing
The Fez Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 ..Unfortunate, sorry you didn't like it that much. I found it very nice. However "a little dissapointing" with respect to a Coopers, may mean it's way better than a bucket load of beers anyway?? On another note -- went to friends house 'bout a month ago at the end of winter for lunch. He's a keen brewer, and I tried his Russian Imperial Stout. Wow! In a small sipper glass, what a black beauty. His was around 11% alc x vol. Nice way to finish off the cold season.
